I've been highly anticipating this ever since I first heard about it and found it was releasing this year. I love a great metroidvania and that gorgeous art style and influences caught my attention. While it sounds like the narrative is a bit lacking, I'm definitely glad to hear that the gameplay is where its at, and that it works on the Steam Deck as well. Accessibility options are always a nice plus too. I'll definitely have to pick it up sooner rather than later. Thanks for the review.
The individual sprites r pretty good looking, but the animations of them r abysmal and that deterred me a lot as it just makes it feel like a mid ugly ori clone that plays and feels more like a scratch game than anything else
I finished the game recently and while it does have a story, it's a little like Hollow Knight where you have to to looking for it to some degree. If you've finished the game and are a little confused about the story, here's a video below that I thought explained it pretty well. I don't recommend watching the video if you haven't finished the game yet as there are major spoilers. th-cam.com/video/dHoDh26LqNk/w-d-xo.html Overall I loved this game though, it was my favorite Metroidvania (that isn't Metroid, lol) since Hollow Knight. I've always been a fan of mythology and folklore so I probably had more fun meeting characters I knew were references to Japanese folklore than most others. I played it on Switch and as for game quality, it's alright, there were times I noticed some lag but I can only count that happening a couple of times throughout my, roughly, 14 hour playthrough. This game has a high focus on both platforming and aerial combat, when fighting a boss, count on being in the air at least half the time, if not nearly the entire fight, which, yes, means a lot of pogo-ing, but they manage to make it very fun imo. Platforming reminds me somewhat of Hollow Knight's White Palace area but toned down a bit, very fun to navigate although it can be frustrating at some points. For a Metroidvania, this game is rather linear as well, while not as linear as, say, Metroid Fusion, the game does make it pretty obvious where you need to go next. I can definitely seeing myself playing this game again in the near future, and I'm currently going for 100% too In my personal opinion, this game is a solid 9/10
I just copy-paste my very short review on this game. Pros: -Pretty 2D Japanese-folklore graphic -Decent exploration -Air combo-focused combat that is fun if you can pull it consistently -Good music Cons: -Forgettable story -Stage design is either too windy or too frustrating to navigate and backtrack -Boss design is sometimes too easy, sometimes is too annoying Verdict: 3.5/5 Comment: It is a good Metroidvania but not without some glaring issues. Most of the time, I enjoy it as a fun adventure through a Japanese folklore world, but some stages and bosses toward the end can be unfun. And who think that Hollow Knight's flower delivery quest through Path of Pain-lite section is a good design?
The creator of AM2R, Milton Guasti, who also worked on Ori 2 as a level designer, is also a level designer on this game. He came on after the KS was a roaring success.
my thots on this game: its good but i have a few provblems 1- some (not all) of the controles feal slugish and a bit bugy 2- the bosses have a big defecutly problem. some are a cake walk like the second boss or are bit too dependent on luck like the fox boss 3-one of the bosses was realy REALY bad gameplay wise in my opinion and the game's story feels oddly short and kind flufed at the same time other then that The art and muisc is realy good. i give it a 7/10
Just beat this game. I thoroughly enjoyed it but man are the achievements brutal. They expect you to beat the game without healing at all or dying once???
Imo, I found it similar to Hollow knight in every way (moving mechanic, boss..) but when you die you don't lose money and need to collect the corpse, the nuisance is you have to respawn at the last temple you rest so sometime if quite far from the place you die.
@@PhuongNgo-rj7ry i ended up taking the plunge and really enjoyed this game. in a way it was the game i sort of wish hollow knight was, improving on some of the needlessly punitive things in that game.
I'm about 10 hours in and I usually I too can get frustrated with this type of game and end up sacking it off. BUT this does a couple of things a bit different, firstly you don't lose anything if you die, so no big worries about getting back to pick up your stuff only to die on route and lose the lot. And the biggest thing I've found useful is to drop the game speed to slow or slower in options. This has been a truly awesome feature and has enabled me to get through a tricky jump, dash type section a bunch of times and nail a tricky boss after falling it at normal speed. Honestly it's been a great option to choose if needed. So I would highly recommend this great game to any players skill level. 😊
The art shows such effort that I’m puzzled why the characters wear their kimono backwards, unless it is because the sprites just mirror-image when they change direction, which is fine. Left lapel goes over right if you’re not a ghost or corpse. This makes a pocket for your right hand.
To be honest, this game "borrows" too many things. Some things are exactly like Hollow Knight, others are definitely from Ori, and I've noticed even Celeste in it (guess where). And it's not just "it's been influenced by", no. Entire mechanics, animations and even BOSS FIGHTS have been shamelessly copied. And as it often happens with thoughtless copies they're executed worse then in the corresponding games where the "inspiration" comes from
This game is GREAT,... However, the platforming on some of the parts and character control can be ATROCIOUS at times. Specifically, the giant skeleton, Gash..... After hitting that thing once and dashing all the way back down, trying to pogo back up the moving hand might just be the WORST part of the entire game. The hit box of that thing makes NO SENSE. I'm pogoing perfectly and then, suddenly the hit box is so tiny, by attack goes right through it and I keep falling. Very frustrating. Can't imagine what the devs were thinking on that part. It's making me not even want to play anymore. There's definitely a hit box glitch on that part, which is AWFUL. It would be GREAT if you guys, (devs), could patch that and make it more playable. It seems though, like every other Metroidvania out there, the devs have to make these games unnecessarily convoluted and obnoxious.
Thanks for the review, I've been looking forward to this one!
Hope you enjoy it!

Whoever did the art for this game deserves an Oscar!
It is amazing!
The individual sprites r pretty good looking, but the animations of them r abysmal and that deterred me a lot as it just makes it feel like a mid ugly ori clone that plays and feels more like a scratch game than anything else
This slipped under my radar. Thanks as always OGJ for a thorough, insightful review!
You bet!
I've got my copy from play asia on its way I'm so excited
Thanks for the review. I was looking on some info what to get, Gestalt or this and seems like Bo wins hands down.
You are so welcome!
Might have to pick up a physical copy of this game. Looks good enough for those of us that like this style of game.
Looks good. Here’s hoping the console ports are in good shape.
Cheers! 🥂
This game is easily on my top 5 Metroidvanias: 1) Blasphemous 2) The Last Faith 3) Blasphemous 2 4) Aeternus Noctis 5) Bo
Great review! How long is it?
It's a pretty big game honestly, probably in the 15-20 hour range depending how much you want to do!
I literally just got my physical imported from Japan today. I cannot wait.
been sometime since i bought a indie might get this on switch seems intressting
Enjoy!
How does the game look on the Nintendo switch oled and what about the performance( both in docked and handleheld mode)?
How does this compare to Nine Sols? Easier or harder?
Great game I recommend it. I love the upgrades you can do to the character.
Oh geez... we got so many great metroidvania games this year like Nine Sols, Momodora, Gestalt, Arzette and now this!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

This looks like it could be one of the best MetroidVanias of all time
Thanks for checking out the video!
Man, this looks perfect!!! I like less characters and more gameplay in hollow knight style
Sounds like a good fit for you!
I just want a new Castlevania game 🙏🏻
Uh, I finished the game. There's an invincibility option?

are there corpse runs when you die? i wasn't really a fan of hollow knight, how similar is that to this? seems very similar.
