Brilliant rig. I’ve spent countless hours iterating and perfecting my Komodo rig too and it’s so satisfying to have it come together and just become a natural extension of yourself and your creative process!!
this... this is what i've been looking for... wow... i also have a komodo 6k and i've been looking for videos about bigger camera rigs for full production setup... just wow
Great rig mate! One thing you might want to consider is having spares for those bnc right angle adaptors. I've heard from a couple video assistants that the life cycle of those can be quite short.
Not gonna lie, it's almost identical to what I have for my Pocket 6K (OG). Having top rails is a game changer for rigging and adds so much real estate while not making the rig too long. Awesome rig. Thanks for sharing!
I was thinking about making’s a raptor style handle from smallrig pieces but i couldnt figure out on how to attach the 4 rods to the backplate. The nato rail is a genius solution. Blew my mind. Get some tennis / baseball grip tape and wrap it around , it will be much more grippy . You can poke the screw holes and the arri pins with a metal rod afterwards.
I've been using a Ranger for a few years and I've always thought about extending the handle at the back to give me something to hold when on jib / dolly. Still grabbing the battery but these are definitely nice solutions that don't cost an absurd amount.
This is pretty dope build. Lots of extra weight for sure. Can't wait till portkeys has a UI update and the wired version works as well as the SMALLHD version. Also the shape handles are the best!
With loosening two knobs and unplugging cables you can pull just the body, battery and handle out in 30 seconds, then just take off the handles and it’s mountable!
If you just unscrew the rosette part of the handle but leave the part that connects to the body on, you can technically switch to gimbal mode without use of any tools which is super nice
Totally! Will try to add it up and see, definitely not the cheapest rig, but this rig started from a lot of old parts I just had lying around so didn't feel too pricey on my end
Would be nice! I just don't find those as common and this will hold pretty well/is standard for most camera builds so you can slide the plate forward/backward a bit
This my guy is a superb rig! Very well thought out. I've been looking into parts to build something like this for ages. The config i have at the moment is sometimes a bit shaky and loose and I hate that. Thanks for making this video!
@@brian.durkee Just one thing that bugs me is that breakout box fixed with that bongo tie 😅🙈 isn't there a solution to mount in properly to those 15mm rods? Maybe a 3D printed adapter?
@@pascalbraendle 3D printed adapter is an awesome idea! Someone else commented the same thing and totally agree, there’s def room for a better solution but in the meantime this has been doing the trick!
I would definitely put that monitor on a magic arm instead of on that swivel thingy, otherwise, really sexy build. I hope that you really only ever have to do it once a month or so 😅thumbs up for canadian parts! #shapewlb !
Shape is the goat!! Didn’t know they were Canadian, let’s go! And that little evf mount I mentioned from small rig is my version of an arm! I typically like that evf or this mount because then my monitor is always close to level with horizon, vs when I put on a magic arm I skew my shots more accidentally.
@@brian.durkee it's definitely a nice camera! Being able to record FF 3:2 OG is awesome, I just need a cage for it to be able to use it in my commercial work... luckily tilta has just released the first full cage for it and i just bought it, should be arriving in the next month !
I really like this rig build, you've found a great solution to the expensive Arri handle extensions. What do you think of replacing the Wooden Camera baseplate with the Kondor Blue 501 adjustable baseplate? It reduces from the unnecessary height the Wooden baseplate adds, and if you need flexibility in raising the rig from the bottom rods, in case of a larger lens, you can easily do that with the Kondor Blue one. *Whilst I was writing this, I realized you had that huge cheese plate at the back of your rig that you can't really move around :) It would be nice to find a solution to that. Perhaps a shorter cheese plate and a railblock that can be adjusted the same way Kondor's baseplate does.
Totally! I just had the wooden camera one hence why i made it work but with the kondor blue one it opens up the possibility to make a back plate that isnt adjustable and do all the adjusting on the kondor blue piece. Great modification idea :) thank you!
Looking at building this out, but wondering if I need to get a Vario 5-- how much does this weigh fully rigged? (Currently going through and adding up all the parts with website descriptions but maybe you'll beat me to it. lol)
She definitely hefty! If running all day with bigger lenses would recommend something’s bigger than mini max (atlas orions for example) otherwise minimax can get the job done! If need to run without easyrig you can just put on shorter rails smaller lens take of the extra handles and it’s pretty manageable!
@@brian.durkee “The use of P-Tap cables to power accessories connected to the camera should be avoided, as the P-Tap's power pin may make contact before the ground pin and the accidental flow of current may damage the camera.” This was the reasoning for it but based on your response this couldnt or shouldnt be a problem if you follow the SDI protocol right?
@@brian.durkee do you have any thoughts if i should save money for better Lighting or buying a 1000 generation w/full AC kit. Any creators you know to recommend for AC kits etc?

I mean this is cool and all, some clever building but it doesn't hide the fact that this is the most overbuild and overthinked camera package I've ever seen. Let this poor komodo out of its chastity cage. You're not supposed to edge your camera like this bro.
You are just plain wrong. This is the best PRODUCTION komodo rig iv seen. Wouldnt go out to shoot with it handheld but the guy said himself that it is NOT FOR THAT. For a profuction rig this has everything. Your sdi is in a safe and accessible place. The rig does not jitter anywhere. You have a long raptor style handle so you can grip it anywhere. You have a million mounting points and rods to mount anything from follow focus to video transmitter and /or timecode. The battery is easily accessible. I dont agree with the Monitor mount but that is personal preference and if your rig falls thus exoskeleton will ensure that youcan continue shooting because probably it would brake the motor and the timecode but not the camera.
FINALLY a Komodo built for big production work. I've been waiting to see a build like this on YT for awhile.
As an AC this is making me feel some time of way. Best Komodo rig for sure.
The ultimate goal is to make all ACs happy ACs one day.
Yup... most impressive and meticulous Komodo rig I've seen. Nice work!!!
Thanks a bunch!
Ive always prided myself on clean and efficient rigs, but man, you are something else…Brilliant setup
By far the greatest camera rig video I’ve ever seen. I want to make something just like this for my fx6!
That would be sick!! But that being said my fav thing about the fx6 is how it’s so capable even not rigged out at all. 🎉
Brilliant rig. I’ve spent countless hours iterating and perfecting my Komodo rig too and it’s so satisfying to have it come together and just become a natural extension of yourself and your creative process!!
Yes! Defintiely one of the things that never gets old is the customization possible with the variety of parts these days.
