I remember the average car payment was around $400 only a couple of years ago. I often get looked down on because of my older car compared to those at my workplace but it's so liberating knowing I have nothing to prove to anyone.

Exactly, you don’t have to prove anything to anyone. I have a 2015 Mercedes-Benz. Most ppl are shocked when they realized it’s not a new model. It’s in pristine shape, and could easily pass for a new model. I own it because I love the style and all its features. I had savings and paid it off cash. But ppl think I’m paying a high car payment on a new model 🤣. Ppl can think whatever they want , I’m smart not stupid. There’s nothing wrong with liking luxury or finer things in life. We just have to be smart about our purchases 😌

@@gracieluf424 I had a 20-year-old Mercedes - it ran very smooth - as much as a brand new car. you got that right. I paid cash. Great comfort knowing it can't be repossessed or no payments. The only problem with the Mercedes was it could be a little pricey to repair and it took premium gas. I always buy used and pay cash - many times they leak fluids - but the Mercedes didn't do that.

I just want to say, I’m loving the diversity Ramsey is including on the show! It’s so refreshing to see people of all walks of life come together for financial literacy.
When I was a kid i noticed a really nice truck parked in a run down home. The truck was customized and very expensive. I didn’t understand why ppl cared more about having a nice vehicle instead of a nicer house. The illusion of wealth is so stupid. Ppl are so irrational and emotional with vehicles

Yes, wondering if the numbers are fake. They're possible, but not likely. As crazy as banks are about loaning anything to almost anyone, you still have to have a "reasonable" debt ratio to qualify for the loan.
There are LOTS of people in ALL age groups that WANT IT NOW and will pay whatever it takes to GET IT. So sad.

I bought a 2009 vehicle in 2014. The payments were $440/month and I thought that was absurd. I paid it off in 2017. Still driving it today.

Very nice! I bought my 97 Lexus ES 300 for $5500 in full in 2006 for college. It had 151k miles. Now it has 325k miles.
Still drive my 20 years old Corolla, simply can't kill the thing.
I'm still driving my 2005 Taurus, bt in 2007 for cash - today very minor rust, no damage, still looks and runs great, do my own repairs & my insurance is cheap - and so am I !

Bought a slightly used Fusion in 2008 paying cash. 2023 Still driving it - no problems. I always pay cash on a BASIC one to two year old car, then drive it until it's worth it's weight in scrap. No debt's including house.

This is why dealers have no problem selling people 700-1000 payments and saying its a good deal. This TikTok just conditions people to think that car payments the size of MORTGAGE PAYMENTS is perfectly okay.

What gets me is the look the people give while they're talking about their car payment. "Yeah I should be embarrassed because we all know these payments are stupid, but I'm also kinda smug because I can afford these payments."

They both started off stupid, she just happened to wake up to the reality of indebtedness before him. What is she doing to help him see facts? Snowballing debt behind his back is not the answer. Before you all go out to a car dealer and immediately tell them you pay it all in cash, it's a lot better to do it AFTER you're done negotiating a price.. you will probably get a way better deal that way .. The car dealers make a lot of money on the interests and they know it.
Most of those car payments are more than my payment on my 15 year mortgage. 🤦♂️

I’ve had all used cars. Good thing is you can also start to work on them / repair them yourself so there’s less pressure of messing something up as opposed to something brand new .

Documentation and tracking every dollar is key. Since I started writing everything down and seeing EXACTLY what is coming in and what is going out I pay much closer attention and know exactly what is going on and when to pivot.
Absolutely. That's how I got my budget under control. Most people have no idea what they spend on food. Start with the grocery store then snacks at work, snacks and drinks at the gas station, junk at any checkout counter, and then the biggy - eating out!!!! You have to track every category.
