I did buy the album of Donaldson and it is an inspiration for any saxophonist. And with your teaching, Wally, I finally took my two sax and restart playing.
Thank you DR. Wally you have helped me to have a better understanding of some key elements of music and playing saxophone your ways of teaching are a great help to me. My wife can hear the improvement .
Very valuable experience...with all the keys to memorize, minor thirds, transposing to guitar keys, on and on.... after weeks of studying and trying I've learned to not even think of playing with others...just enjoy solo improv created of ones own sounds.
It helped much as being Guitar blues / rock primary but into sax sounds with Grant Green influence with Lou and others this helped navigate the alto . The tendency was to play the motif in the lower octave and reaching into higher octave to accentuate a phrase with notes that did not sing . It lacked alto high register and now with familiar sounds of Lou the playing makes sense and upper octave pinching up can at last make use of alto sound . Thanks it is a eureka moment here . Sadly but that’s blues … happy and sad stories .
Thanks a lot Dear Dr Wally...Fantastic lesson. playing after you is a good system and really pleasant...I'm sure i 'll progress with you. Musically.Gilles Fr.
Thank you for this lesson! Super nice licks for the call & response! I have basically chosen this tune as my introduction to playing jazz blues. I notice that in "Blues Walk" Lou Donaldson often ends phrases on the 6th (B natural on alto), but during phrases the Bb is more predominant.
Super lesson thankyou so much, and Happy thanksgiving. Had fun after repeating the phrases, went back to the beginning and made up some of my own in answer to yours...til the mouth got the collywobbles! good G sharp workout!
Doc really enjoyed this masterclass, Lou Donaldson is a supreme sax player nobody sounds like him. People have always told me to learn the blues however if not used like the greats it’s an extremely hard sound to master properly, so I never really use it. I really enjoyed the call and response on this one more please. P.s. are you enrolling anytime soon.
That was the first time I have played along and was amazed I could actually do it!! And I thought I sounded great, even if the neighbours didn't :) Been having lessons for a year and loving it! Never to old to learn. Is there a full music sheet available for this lesson please? Thanks for the workshop 🎷
Hey Peter, so glad to hear this! There's no .pdf for this lesson, but I do offer full workbooks for each module in my private studio. All the notes you need for this lesson are on the screen ;)
I love Lou Donaldson and thank you for the highlight on the role of b5 and getting away from endlessly searching up and down the scale for something to say. I came in through the bebop door and think you should do a future video on mixing bebop phrases with blue scale phrases a la Dizzy and other masters. Can you say where in NC he went to school? This state has produced so many giants - Coltrane, Nina Simone, and Diz actually from Cheraw, SC but went to his first music school in Laurinburg.
thanks Leycroft, it's a late 5-digit Selmer mark vi from 1960 with my 56 Select Mouthpiece. Stock Ligature (for now) with a 3 soft (filed) D'Addario Jazz Select reed.
Great Dr Wally, I would like to enroll in your academy. In the meantime, could I know which mouthpiece and reeds do you use? Thanks and congratulations again for your valuable lessons. Greetings from Italy!
Hello my Italian friend! My mouthpiece is the 56 Select from Windy City Woodwinds, paired with a D'Addario 3-soft filed reed. Happy practicing, and greetings from North Carolina!
Hey Dr Wallace, I've noticed there isn't the option to download the audio recordings of the monthly études from your fundamentals course. Did you remove them?
So good Thank you! Do you know that you speak really fast? 🤪 I'm French...so I'm sensible to that. Ballade and tone...are you thinking of Ben webster? Or this is too corny for you guys... By the way Merci Merci Merci 🙏 🙏🙏
@@drwallysax Oh...good for you! I mean...you sound great on everything you play. In a world of MKVIs it is just nice to see the "other guys" getting some love too. Maybe that's what is behind my own sax choices...Yanagisawa, Ishimorim, YTS-82Zii. I really love the Ishimori the best! Are you still on the WCW 56?
I wish I had a saxophone teacher like Dr Wally 20 years ago. I could have been a STAR by now!!!
So do I
great vocabulary to have fun with a bluesy sound. Love it
Thanks, Thomas! Happy practicing!

Really enjoyed playing along, love sounding the blue note loud!
This is my favorite video of yours so far.
Lou Donaldson was such a great jazz and blues player.
These are some of the best blues licks I've come across. I love them. Thanks, doc
Wonderful, happy practicing Russell! (and thanks)!
Thank you so much for all the great stuff you are posting !

Many many thanks for this video. Really a very good lesson.

He studied at NC A&T!
The lick at 11:27. I'm using bis Bb key in first triplet and side Bb in second bar. Am I doing right? Thanks in advance. Excellent lesson as always.
I love your sound on that Mark 6. What is the serial number range?
Gee thanks… If I knew how to read music, I wouldn’t need to watch your video genius.
super good sound!!
what mouthpiece and reed you use?
where is the pf, for this great lesson O O just copy, so home work to do this so cool .
Cool!
Great sound Dr. Wally what is your regular set up now please .

@@drwallysax well thats just cruel haha. ok thanks no worries.

Would you ever consider doing something like this for funk/fusion language?
I'll never say never, but honestly, my passion is for mid-century jazz and classical music.

is there a pdf/printout for this workshop. It's kicking
Hey Dr Wallace, I've noticed there isn't the option to download the audio recordings of the monthly études from your fundamentals course. Did you remove them?
Afraid the original fundamentals course is no longer supported. We'll be offering tons of other free content this coming year.
@@drwallysax ok glad you answered, can't wait on that new material!
Sim, toquei muito bem. 😂😂😂😂
Where is the link to the written music ?
The real magic is when e.g. David Sanborn mixes minor and major pentatonics to create that contrast
Robben Ford too
The REAL magic is the friends we make along the way :)
But also sanborn ;)
uah! 🐻👍💥🎷💥👍
So good
Thank you!
Do you know that you speak really fast?
🤪
I'm French...so I'm sensible to that.
Ballade and tone...are you thinking of Ben webster? Or this is too corny for you guys...
By the way
Merci Merci Merci 🙏 🙏🙏
I adore Ben Webster! He's amazing. I do speak very quickly, it's how I'm built. Unless I'm speaking French, then it's slow and incoherent!

Hate it when Johnny bites the dog
So does the dog ;)
I don't know why but, I feel slightly sad seeing you with a Selmer. So few hold-outs left.
My Yamaha is getting overhauled ;)
I have a 1961 Selmer!
