Drinker's Chasers - That Disastrous Superman Reveal

- James Gunn's first official image of his new Superman didn't exactly go down well with fans. In fact, its become the object of mockery throughout the internet. But is it simply a misunderstood take, or does it point to bigger problems with Gunn's DCU?
Superman looks like a depressed construction worker getting ready for a job he hates at 4 am...
I'm a construction worker and it's exactly what came to mind immediately
Just your average Amazon employee back to the warehouse for some modern, recreational serfdom
He's pulling himself up by his bootstraps
I don't think construction work is the the low of the low, do some actual research or please stop.
one can almost listen to "f*ck", as he finally wears the boots, then a second "f*ck", when he tries to standup, a fina F8cuk when he finallly stand up.
There's been too many "disastrous" things that turned out okay and too many "amazing" first looks that turned out to be total trash...it's too early to tell anything.
thats actually how i picture drinker every time a new movie comes out these days
Yep. He's fumbling around in his boot hoping he's left a bottle of Jack Daniels in there.
It’s a perfect photo as it represents modern audiences and how they are tired of the end of the world scenario in every super hero movie.
Nobody in the real world looked at this and said "why is he ignoring the giant laser in the background" or "why does he look like he doesn't give a shit". What I and many others immediately thought was "cool that's what his suit will look like" and "oh it looks like he's suggesting that there's something going on in the city that has nothing to do with Superman". As well as the general color grading we'll probably see in the movie.
The one dude even acknowledged that this is a candid photo taken on set to show off the suit. But then they just move past that and treat it like it's practically a painting that represents the entire movie.
There's is no teaser image that could've been released that these guys wouldn't have looked this deep into.
Because TH-cam dorklords gotta make their money somehow, and it ain’t through a good day’s work.
Its definetly a photo made for magazine promotion, but what James Gunn has made clear on what comic runs are inspiring this movie, particularly All Star Superman make me feel like this Superman movie will head in the correct direction, especially when we see it in action through Trailers.
At least Gunn didn't Doctor Who it and make Superman a gay black gentlemen
The suit reminds me of Superman's base form suit from those Injustice video games. It's very utilitarian in design, less spandexy.
Guys...it's ONE picture. It doesn't mean anything.
Would have been good if the photo was Clark Kent revealing the S from under his work shirt. Like getting ready to release Superman.
Just a photo guys
It’s just the actor putting the boots back on , maybe after a long day .
that Brightburn itch of his still hasnt been scratched it seems
Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! No it's some really depressed chap who hates his life.
Hey, a candid, unplanned shot worked for Barbie! Why not Superman!
Looks like they got a suit made for Henry 😬
Didn't Gunn say his Superman was gonna be hope inspiring etc? So why release _this_ shot?? At least Godzilla is dealing with what threat in the background.
Remember when Cavill said the new Superman would be patriotic, positive and uplifting, then he was fired. Remember that? Now this Gunn sneak peek.
If you think he was let go for saying that you’re lost in the sauce.
@@Mogorman87 Of course not, but look what's coming.

“I feel like the maid… c-can we keep this place clean for the next 10 MINUTES??”
Cavill was perfect for the role ..
Huge mistake not giving him another shot at it ..
He wasn't perfect. He looked the part but in DC movies his acting is lackluster aside from a scene or 2.
Get over it.
@@timneptune198 Henry Cavill is a good actor though, so if he seems bad in the DC movies it's probably down to bad directing or some other factor.
@@timneptune198 THIS.
Mate, he had like 3 or 4 chances, and he blew it every time. He cannot act.
I will NEVER forgive Hollywood for NOT giving me a Cavill Superman that was a positive and happy Superman. He was so PERFECT. If only he had been given a script where Superman actually LIKED being Superman.
This. The last thing I want to see is yet another GrimDark, Zach Snyder Superman, who doesn't give a crap about anything.
In that pile of garbage that was the Justice League movie, there was a glimpse of what could've been. It was definitely not something that came from Snyder. For all his flaws, Joss Whedon could've given us a Superman that brings hope. In the wrong hands, even diamonds turn to sht.
Hollywood? They might suck, but Snyder is the asshat that didn’t understand the character. Pretty sure after people told him, he doubled down and continued to bastardize Superman out of spite.
He did. I mean, in his first flight, in MoS, he was almost crying he was so happy. He was also cracking wise, later in the film.
In BvS, after he saved the girl from the fire, he smiled at her parents.
Those are just a few examples. There were others.
I don't think I ever saw a live-action superhero like that, other than the Christopher Reeves movies and the (glorious) Batman tv series. You can only have either broody and miserable or sardonic douche cracking jokes.
It looks like he hates his 9-5 job. That’s something we do. We don’t want to see that in our superheroes
The sad truth is that anything in life can feel tedious once it becomes a routine; even saving the world.
its just a set photo lmao
Wasn't that literally Cavill's Superman, though? He took his heroism as some sort of burden he sulked about all the time.
@@jacksonlogger Exactly. It's just to show the costume and the actor. These streamers really did milk this one.
Thats literally just 1 photo lmao
So this is what the Temu version of Henry Cavill looks like, I see...
Cavill was the best Superman after Christopher Reeve
He's perfectly captured the "I hate my job" look that Superman is renowned for..... Oh wait a minute!
Womp womp
Generous interpretation: Superman's having a Mr. Incredible moment.
"No matter how many times you save the world, it always manages to get back in jeopardy again. I feel like the maid. I just cleaned up this mess, can't you keep it clean for ten minutes?!"
Perhaps. But given that it's an in-between-takes photo it's the actor that looks that way. In that moment he's not playing Superman, he's just a guy with an acting job.
@@justinm2697 That context doesn't come across in the photo. He's not sitting in a "backstage" environment, or with other staff, or next to filming equipment, or anything to break the illusion. Releasing this specific photo for PR was foolish.
@@Hypershell What's foolish is people negatively judging one picture that isn't even bad.
@@CorruptDemocratsJ6 The background is bad. It creates a bad synergy. If the actor was sitting in front of a black curtain, I might have agreed with you.
It looks like someone asked an AI to draw "brooding Superman" and then tried to replicate that with a real actor, a store-bought costume, and Adobe Photoshop.
Probably AI did a better job
When I saw the thumbnail I thought it was AI 😳
Yep, not just an AI image, but an AI image of Cavill's Witcher character as Superman, just moments after he dropped the iconic F bomb.
It really does look like an AI pic
@@JustapErsonWhat does an AI photo look like exactly? How does this compare?
If they had replaced the image in the window with a solid block of Chroma-Key green or old blue screen it would have told viewers it was a behind the scenes image and it wouldn't be taken so badly.
Maybe it was the LED volume behind him, and that's just what was cued up on the screen at that time?
James Gunn’s run will go down as one of the most epic failures in cinema history.

Drinker is right. We dont need another Taika Waititi like Superhero movie where you have an apocalyptic setting and the hero makes jokes. Superman was always a serious hero who carried the whole weight of the earth on his shoulders. Literally.
Actually he's a serious character, but in a light hearted tone unlike batman.
@@rommelbengaliI think that’s a better description of him. He’s a man where in any situation he tries to be positive and who understands the full seriousness of the situation but does so with a positive attitude.
He's serious, but he's also an optimist and he possesses pretty much every one of the classical virtues. The only internal conflict he struggles with is the fact that he always has to pull his punches.
@@alexvesper7820nah read some more comics, he also struggles with the burden of being Superman, the pressure of perfection and the ideal of Superman. Pulling his punches isn’t the only internal struggles he has, that would make him boring and not relatable
@thegotspod the point is that he's not an antihero, he's a hero. Modern studios have forgotten how to do heroes.
Man looks tired and like he hates his life.
"ANOTHER space laser? Come on Luthor! It's 5am gosh darn it! Guess I'll have to say Metroplis AGAIN. "
It's tough times my friend.
Prob gonna be relatable then
False. He looks like he's been in a big battle yet still has a tinge of levity on his face despite the circumstances.
Maybe his only son died in Vietnam and his wife left him and he's an alcoholic and nobody respects him as an archeology professor. Maybe he just got a visit from his "god daughter" that's never been seen or mentioned before just now. Maybe he just wants some of that tasty green space cow milk straight from the teet. So many possibilities.

When you order Henry Cavill Superman from Wish
He has that look on his face like an Amazon Warehouse employee on a Monday morning getting ready for his 12 hour shift.
The look of a FOXConn factory worker when they realize that new suicide nets were just installed 😂
This is what an Amazon warehouse worker looks like when he has to pretend to fiddle with his boot to disguise the fact that he's peeing in a bottle.
James needs a better PR/ marketing team. Assuming he has one. Every decision he has made since announcing Henry's firing has been polarizing.
Ouch, good point.
Yeah, sad.
Gunn has always had an issue with taste. He has niche humor to put it lightly and often his tastes are not what the general audience likes. GotG is an outlier because of Disney/Marvel Studios reigning him in. I thought his The Suicide Squad, without oversight, had significant issues with the humor and characterization of many characters. Gunn unchecked is not good in my opinion and having him in charge of DC is a ticking time bomb, especially with popular characters like Superman and Batman.
This is a chronic case of not reading the room.
@@tristandevlin6667That is a big problem of WB. They are VERY director-friendly and seem to let the directors do what they want unchecked. That works for directors with a crystal clear vision. But some directors. Synder, Gunn, Taika. Need to be kept on a short leash.
The depiction of Superman in this photo seems to portray him as a reluctant and a sad character. DC already has a dark and brooding hero. His name is Batman. To morph Superman into a morose character simply makes him redundant. There is a reason, nearly 50 years since Christopher Reeve first donned the tights, that people still look so fondly on his portrayal of Superman. He represented the exact antithesis of this cynicism. It is time that DC recapture the optimism that Reeve so fully embodied when they portray Superman.
Superman is optimism and idealism in its best form.

@@Jackfromshack Having unlimited power would make anyone depressed. Imagine being able to fix most of the issues in life for others, and having almost none of them yourself! Much sadness. He's probably listening to My Chemical Romance.
I mean, at least he has the curl and the red trunks, but I desperately wanted a more traditional costume, like Brandon Routh's suits. Peacemaker looks comic accurate, Supes should, too.
Almost makes me think they wanna tie it into Pattinson's Batman, since that also goes for a more "realistic" look.
Unfortunately, not everything that looks good in comics can look good in live action.
Think of MODOK and the classic Green Arrow costumes from the TV series.
@@ii-mp1sp I'm not gonna disagree with that in general, but Superman in particular works in live action. Reeve and Routh both had costumes that were comics accurate and looked good.
@@Return_of_Godzillas_Revenge The films with Reeve were released more than 40 years ago and look outdated, and the film with Raut was a failure and was not liked by many, especially in us outside America.
Most people abroad are fans of Superman after the Man of Steel.
@@ii-mp1sp Not really. The Justice League cartoon from the 2000s was where a lot of young people got their introduction to Superman, and that's just about the most classic, comics accurate version of the character you can get.
I don't have any pros or cons to the actors since I didn't know he existed till just a few days ago,so I have no bias
The image they revealed just reminded me of that one scene from Spider-Man 3 when peter was taking off the boot after fighting sandman
Idk just the idea of doing something simple as suiting up or taking parts off to clean out is just funny in a way
Ehh...bit of an overreaction I think. The photo is fine, not great but far from what everyone is saying. Although the suit should have been touched up with some sfx.
Many, many years ago I always said they should make a "World's Finest" style Superman/Batman movie that takes place in the 40's and has a very optimistic (and cheesy) tone, where Supes and Bats call each other "Chap" or something. Jon Hamm as Supes, and Michael Fassbender as Bats, both bulking up 25-30 pounds of muscle for the role.
That'd be better than what these fools have to offer nowadays.
Good god, no.
There was an animated movie with Batman and Superman world's finest.
@@anthonyclarke2253 That wasn't bad, actually. Pretty decent.
Cant wait until they reveal the kryptonian sky beam DUBSTEP machine 😂
BWAAUUUMMMM of Steel
This discussion reminds me of the first official photo of Jared Leto as Joker.
Heath Ledger in TDK is UNMATCHED, IMO
It’s literally just a picture of the actor in a Superman costume. Like I get it, it’s fun to hate on superhero movies and the hate in almost every case is warranted but this isn’t one of them. I don’t know how you glean so much negativity from literally just a picture of the actor getting into costume.
What's hilarious is there's a sky laser of doom in the background. So not only does everything we can see in regards to the costume look awful, but it's sky lasers again.
Looks like a giant space abortion to me.
At least this one is horizontal instead of vertical.
What a depressing straw to cling on to.
@@taudvore259 lol. I didn't notice that. It's completely different because the laser is going horizontal! Not like in Avengers when it goes up or Suicide Squad when it goes down. Seriously, what would Hollywood writers do if sky lasers weren't a thing?
Easing us into the future when the actual beam from Earth beams up into the sky!
I’m gonna need an origin story and heroic arc about skybeams now.
Burnet’s explanation was insane it doesn’t matter they released it and it sucks.
Lmao he is so fucking stupid just hearing his bullshit drops the iq about 10 points per word
Ive never seen RMB drop the ball so hard. Wtf was that?
@@Brian_Boru I have lots of times... hes always making excuses for things should have heard him go on making excuses for georg Lucas selling out lol his takes almost always suck now
I'm kinda disagree with the panel on this one. I think they're probably reading too much into the image. I don't think it's meant to imply he's ignoring danger outside and just sick of it all like Doctor Manhattan or something.
I don't think a perfect, smiley, never-gets-stressed-about-anything (unless magic green rock appears!) Superman is going to bring the fans out. They'll say they like it but won't care enough to support it. I want a Superman who can be a bit weary because if you think about it, anytime he stops to live his life, someone else suffers. That would be stressful. Kryptonite is good and all, but I have been hoping for a Superman to become taxed or stressed by something other than "magic green rock." Yes he needs to be idealistic, and that's precisely why we feel his pain. That's why the climax of Hacksaw Ridge is so powerful. He's completely pouring his all into what he can do (leave it all out in the field, so to speak), and it takes it out of him. Anyway, I still have some optimism about the film.
It's literally one shot and the fandom is loosing their mind.
Seriously, you see this shit all the time in nerd culture. People get one screenshot and think they have the whole fucking plot figured out. Everyone needs to calm the hell down and at least wait until we get something actually substantial before they call the movie shit.
@@tylertheguy3160agreed. And you know, this is actually genious marketing.
Every reactionary person like Critical Drinker who likes to milk the recent news/events is talking about this suit. That generates attention, because negativity is always more valuable on the Internet.
We don't even have a normal and clear look on the suit, and people are already talking about it.
In other news… Water. Wet.
@seregagerassimov4864 THIS. I wouldn’t be surprised if Disneyfilm released a photo of Daisy Ridley wearing a Mandalorian outfit while sipping on a “Fanboy Tears” cup. In fact, I hope they do precisely that!
4:30 If that's the case, then why were so many people lining up and excited to see Robert Pattinson's Batman movie even though he's like the hundredth dude to don the cowl?
Hired Stanley Anvil instead of Henry Cavil
I don't know I kind of like the image.
Same, there's things I don't like but it's not horrible. I kinda wish he was happier
Same
@@amandapanda3657There's people dying in the background you expec Expect him to be happy
@mariobadia4553 yeah the background and his expression is the problem. It's just not what I imagined but it's whatever. Hopefully better images come soon
That one edit of superman looking clean and bright light makes it infinitely better
Ok I get why James Gunn used it and that it wasn't a planned picture but even so think if they released this imagine and one of him sitting like in All-Star superman.
This is how we put on our shoes. Put on our shoes. Put on our shoes.
So early before the apocalypse!
