Glad you are playing one of the most influential games of all time. The OST for the Franchise is very unique.

Half Life 2 in particular is a masterclass in environmental storytelling and tutorials. For example, at no point does anyone actually tell you what happened after the Resonance Cascade. The Seven Hour War, The Combine and the Transhuman forces, Earth being drained of its resources. You have to piece it all together by paying attention to the world.

"Nah, I was already playing video games before most of you guys were born..."
I can tell from the way you're playing! *_Btw did you know?_* Research suggests that players who've been gaming their whole lives are more likely to become nauseous from playing first person games. You see, the large variety of perspectives - viewmodels, FOVs, etc. - leaves its mark on the mind, making it increasingly more difficult for -older- more experienced gamers to adapt to new first person games without getting sick. The fact you can't play *_Skyrim_* without feeling ill to your stomach shows just how much gaming experience you've already had by 2011, amazing!

I love this game. I hate to be a gamer boomer, but they don't make 'em like this anymore. It's chock full of little details, from the breakable bottles you can pick up and throw, to the environmental storytelling, to the immersive gameplay that doesn't yank control out of you by playing a cutscene. When something happens in the world, *you* are interacting with it.

I remember exactly where I was when I first heard about the first Half-Life. I was 16 and I was with my parents at a party my neighbours were throwing, I was talking with one of the other neighbours when I mentioned that I'd finished playing the hell out of Quake 2. He recommended Half-Life with the loosest description I think is possible to give. "You're a scientist on a train going to work. Then there's an alien invasion."
I was hooked immediately, and then here we are, 27 years later.

One of the best games ever made. Especially impressive given all the problems Valve was dealing with during its development. They talk about it in the 20th anniversary documentary. There's one particular moment during the lawsuit that is crazy, and had it not happened, Valve and Steam might not exist today.

Folks here have probably mentioned Black Mesa before, but I think it’d be a cool thing to try. It was the composer (Joel Nielsen)’s first project iirc, and there’s a lot more and different music compared to the original. You could even do a thing comparing how game composing has evolved since 1998, or something. I dunno, just had the thought.

its weird seeing G-Man after the 20th anniversary update where they removed the brightness of his eyes. He just looks so...off to me now. Its how I was used to seeing him that way for so long.

If anyone wants to replay this and have a VR headset, there is a VR mod for this that essentially allows you to play HL2 but in VR. (And yes,Ravenholm is even creepier in VR xD)

I really love sequels that veer off into unexpected territory. It's just peak speculative fiction, looking forward from the consequences of something that you already made up yourself in a different story. It gives you a way to explore the same themes in a totally different context while still tying it back somehow. Wacky late-90s science facility involved in what's basically a government UFO cover-up? Nah, sci-fi dystopia.

Man... it's really frustrating to me how people perceive a really snappy weapon like the HL2 pistol as "puny" because it doesn't have way too much bass and it isn't loud enough that it starts clipping. Kinda hyperbole but I've played enough less professionally developed shooters to notice that that's what people go for, for some reason.

My son fell in love with this game when he was 5 yrs old lol he’s 17 now and was just playing it again recently. It’s still his favorite game, he’s watched every documentary and played every fan made game about it there is. It’s almost relaxing for him. I’ve played it too, for how old it is, it’s surprisingly still great.

Stuff woulda given me nightmares when I was 10!
