We reached 1.5k subscribers this week, that's insane. Thank you all so much for the support. Behavioral Economics and Behavioral Science is such a great evidence-based community to be a part of right now. What is really amazing is the ability for us to use behavioral science for self-development and productivity purposes. Delivering actually scientifically backed advice that will legitimately improve your life, not just give advice based on opinion like these other productivity 'gurus' on the internet. Understanding HABITS is really key. There is so much misinformation about habits out there, and we have good data to justify why these poor pieces of advice are incorrect. If you want real tips on how to build strong, healthy habits and break unhealthy bad ones, subscribe to my channel for actual evidence-based advice.

@@treali Your point about dopamine receptors is interesting. But your citations are all about addiction to drugs, which works very differently to a behavioural addiction like social media addiction. Do you have any sources for a study on behavioural addiction and dopamine? Specifically, how the type of “behavioural detox” that so many of the TH-camrs are talking about with dopamine detox videos, have on dopamine receptors. Genuinely curious to learn.

In the new ICD digital addiction is now classified together with drug abuse, because the neural correlations, the hit the brain takes is comparable. I guess that says something something about the dopaminergic intensity of the stimuli from social media.

I mean the dude in the video looks about 26. You are so emotional, it is no surprise you're so upset he debunked this illogical disproven idea of "dopamine detox".

Loved the video and subscribed. I decided to a more extreme version of 'dopamine detox' which is basically a week of lower to negligible consumption of electronic media (phones, TV, dating apps, social media - you name it) and this definitely made me more productive and improved my concentration levels in the following weeks.
I've since thought I could train my brain to enjoy low dopamine releasing activities (e.g. working) through avoidance of high dopamine releasing activities (e.g. Dating apps). It works but guess not for the same reasons advertised In a number of these videos.

Well what I infer is that dopamine detox or fasting is more like a hard reset of rewarding system in our brain and increase the focus. It's the process of breaking the habits that formed due to high rewarding tasks which might not be useful for our growth rather than they consume our time without any sort of gains for us. Once you reach the baseline dopamine level, we should consciously take the less rewarding tasks like gym etc to form habit on that whilst maintaining an average level of high rewarding tasks( like reducing screen time) . Because cutting out those high rewarding tasks will make you gloomy or non motivated state. Since the dopamine is at base level, focus will be clear and we should divert ourself to the activities which helps us to achieve something.
    So in simple terms,
Dopamine detox - brings back dopamine to base level - improved focus - consciously choose what habit you want to form - maintain a balance of high and low rewarding tasks ( delayed gratification works)

Because the vast majority of viewers on youtube are children, and for channels like that it's almost all of them. Teenagers are universally known to be clueless, easily fooled, dramatic, etc.
A sucker is born every minute, and at least here in the USA adolescence often doesn't end until mid to late 20's.
Channels like this are going to be skewed much more heavily towards adults, but will still primarily be children (teens). Most adults simply dont have the time to watch much of anything, and are much more likely to have habits that dont revolve around social media.

Pardon me if I'm not understanding correctly, but I would absolutely love some clarification on this. It seems like you agree that there is some truth to the intended effects of dopamine fasting (@6:11) even if laymen youtubers are incorrectly describing the underlying psychological/physiological functions. While it is true that this "dopamine reset" would cause you to regain dopamine sensitivity and that you would still prefer highly dopaminergic activity, is that reason enough for it to not be worth doing? Because to me it seems there would be a difference in trying to engage in low dopamine activity while overstimulated and low dopamine activity while you are not overstimulated, even if there are higher dopamine activities available. The dopamine fast wouldn't on its own cause you to become addicted to chores and such the same way you would become addicted to games/social media/etc., but combined with some self-discipline could it not be a useful tool in trying to facilitate healthier habits?

People don't experience negative emotion for no reason other than a obscure concept called mental health. It might be a misaligned perception of reality but nevertheless it could and often is absolutely that you aren't doing something in your life that you KNOW that you should be doing. Something that you should be saying but aren't. Etc

Most of this is caused by past trauma, which will effect you even when your life is currently perfect and the source of the trauma is long gone.
Your life can be fine, and often is, when you suffer these things. For many reasons.
Your life can also be going perfectly fine and you still are lonely despite all your work to fix it.
There are endless reasons why sadness, depression, and loneliness have no current cause and/or is not your fault.

It’s hard to test this on humans for ethical reasons, so most of our models of dopamine come from mouse/rat studies, and then we observe similar behavioural patterns in humans, so we assume its the same mechanism.
It would depend on how many times you had consumed the stimulus before, and how consistent the reward from that stimulus was.
Whatever the number of days or weeks it is, it’ll have to be a lot longer than a day to detect anything measurable. These processes are slow.

While thinking about it from perspective of "dopamine fasting" isn't the right perspective, there is some value in becoming aware of a habit that you're trying to break and mindfully replacing it with another habit. From a learning perspective, it seems like a variant of negative punishment. And when you say that writing prompts "aren't psychology", writing about how you feel when breaking a habit is a tool in CBT.

You regulate your dopamine over time (I don't think this is the correct thing to say but idk) by slowly cutting things out. For example, I've been scrolling on the STEM field and reading more instead of endless scrolling.

Nice! Going on the offence, Is this a calculated move?
If I have to translate the fact checking and the rationale for benefits of dopamine fasting to actions for improvements, it would be that spreading the practice of journaling, meditating and mindfulness over several months in short intervals. And that would reap good results.

Yes agreed. Doing mindfulness regularly seems like a way more practical way to reap the benefit of dopamine fasting without the extreme measures. Though word of caution, like i say in the video, the research on mindfulness is still inconclusive. Some people find it works great, others, not so much. So basically the things people do in dopamine detox is eventually good, but it really shouldn't be called dopamine detox?

    • @nowayjosedaniel
      @nowayjosedaniel ปีที่แล้ว

It has nothing to do with dopamine, you cannot detox dopamine, and some of the things you do are extremely vague simple generic things, while other things like not eating food is dangerous when paired with exercise or hiking and have absolutely no benefit in this context, except as possibly a limited spiritual action called Fasting, which is quite a bit different than just touching grass or reading a book.
Also the more important component is that the things suggested could be replaced WITH the "high dopamine" things and see the same benefits.
For example, someone could pause playing highly competitive (stressful) video games to play 18 hrs straight of a more relaxing video game, and achieve the same or more stress reduction than if they fasted from food while taking a walk. Because it has nothing to do with dopamine.

I think you're getting too caught up on the this one video and the name "dopaime detox". This isnt even the standard "dopamine detox". Its more like a one day fast... Food depravation is typically not involved and it lasts more like a month.
Nobody actually thinks they're detoxing the brain from dopamine..Its just a catchy name. Its a process of using willpower to breakthrough the extreme discomfort experienced when depriving yourself of unnecessary habits and a procrastination based lifestyle which no longer serves you. It works very well. You force yourself to no longer peruse old habits which your mind does associate with a dopamine's release, weather or not that habit still releases dopamine is irrelevant. You pursue it because you associate it with the dopamine it once released. You are then forced to create new habits that you allow yourself to partake in because they are constructive and you DO release dopamine from these new habits. Now you associate a dopamine rush with constructive habits and want to continue doing constructive things thus improving your life.
That's all dude. I know for a fact from personal experience that it works very well if you are in a situation that requires it. You do not seem to be in that situation but many are.
