Great video. One thing I would like to mention though while many Indian musicians haven't really popped in the western scene, there has been a great increase of Indians in the other aspects of the music Industry, especially A&R and even audio mixing/engineering as of late. One of my cousins is doing his MM in Music Technology at NYU and he said he was shocked at the not just the number of Indians enrolled, but people from other Asian cultures as well. He also said he had a guest lecture with Jeff Bhasker (is half Indian btw), who was the main producer for 808's and heartbreak as well as many tracks off MBDTF, including Runaway. Yes, a guy with Indian lineage was not only involved but actively inputted in the making of one of the greatest modern hip hop albums of all time. (P.S, he also co-produced uptown funk.)
It's not Indian music tho. Its just american music with an Indian face. And all these artists are just american born american raised kids fomoing for India. Ain't nobody trying to come back to motherland. They just trying to co-opt the aesthetics. Living in a different country definitely DOES make you less Indian since you have never seen or experinced the problems of living in India. Plus there are plenty of Indian rappers in India and ymyou have never heard of them. If India was so important to you, you'debe listening to Prabhdeep, Seedhe Maut and the likes.

I think the big buzz around Charli XCX was a bit in part due to Fantano. Obviously Charli XCX dropped a banger but I think the big push around Brat was because Fantano wouldn't stop sucking off this album.
Facts 💯. That album was good but a 10 is wild 💀. He clearly has favourites like Charli, Kendrick, Tyler. He stays hating on my fav rapper J Cole so that’s why I don’t really fw him but I can respect how in depth the majority of his reviews are.
this really is just another entry into the endless trend of "guys look at my art because i'm [from xyz group]" instead of "guys look at my art because of the cool art i just made". i understand people want more diverse artists but whenever i see marketing that prioritizes the marginalized groups the artist is part of it just makes me feel like they're drawing so much attention to that aspect of their identity because they aren't making anything worth listening to/looking at/watching/reading otherwise. and this has been my experience. i can't speak to music as much because i'm generally not on ig and tiktok enough so i don't get any of this content but every time i see a book marketed with read this book by this marginalized author the book is garbage and they clearly only used that marketing tactic because they were hoping more people would care about diversity than the quality of the art. and i think people who rely on being indian to market their art are seriously overestimating the appeal that being indian has for the average music listener
Yh that’s exactly what that Stellar guy I showed in my video is doing. He made music for years doing the corny TikTok trends. He begins to fall off then starts claiming Indian. The thing is we actually do need more Indian artists who are positive representation but marketing yourself in this way is definitely corny
@@TheBrownExperience yep exactly we need the indian artists who are genuinely just trying to make good music to gain a following and be positive representation.
@@epimetrius7348 lol whenever I see MIA trending it’s usually for something negative but you’re right she is a diaspora artist who has made a way in the Western industry. also, what about *UMG* even if Majority of the Hanumankind's Songs are recorded in *India* , they have never shown popularity till they signed to Def Jam India via Universal Music Group
can you also make a video on north-east indians (later when you get time) , as we often times get ignored & you have pretty good amount of western audience/desis i feel. So just a suggestion, rest is up to you.
As someone who has lived my entire life in India, it infuriates me how the media just has to put "indian" as an attachment to any fucking achievement ever. Most of the times , it comes across as extremely condescending , especially so when the media outlet is from somewhere in the west. Its like, "oh look, the brown people finally figured out spaceflight!" bruh what? When an US scientist does some shit, the titles include his name or just "scientist", like "scientist dicovers--" but when its India, or any other developing country it suddenly becomes "Indian scientist--" , like no we do not need to use that card, can you just please stop using it on my behalf? I do not want my place of origin being brought up at any thing I do or excel at, if I wanted to I would, let me have that power. And this grift then ends up getting used by the actual people, which more often than not, makes us look bad, like if you using that card, please, please for the love of everything don't be making shitty music and ruining it for other indian artists, cos people love making stereotypes !. I don't even wanna talk bout how indian media uses it, for the lack of a better word, its slop. Also the fact that this "indian" tag makes people box us into a genre, even the artists using it are inadvertently boxing themselves in into a certain "aesthetic" and that is probably the worst part of it. If you are getting influenced by Indian culture and incorporating it into music, don't tag it as such, let it stand on its own. You dont see yung lean saying ginseng strip is "indian" cos he sampled an indian hymn track, why do we have to? That beat was insane in and off itself. Art can be political, it can and is always cultural, and when done good, it can show all of that implicitly, even when all countries dissolve away, even in a vacuum. (Also really agree with you take on Hanumankind's Big Dawgs, exact same views, love and respect for the guy for putting a bit of light on us, but the song really isn't that special on its own, that video does some severe heavylifting).
I definitely agree with you about the “boxing” yourself in point. If you’re talented enough then you can definitely be more than just an Indian rapper who lives out West rapping in English 😭

The vibe i get from these guys who mention their indian hertiage like this, it DOESN'T feel empowering imo. It just feels like they're trying too hard to appeal to western audiences, so they say "have u ever seen an indian rapper/singer make music like THIS????" Like, imagine if the statment was, "have you ever seen a disabled person play sports like THIS??? idk how to explain it. It COULD just be seen by the artist themselves as like " don't underestimate us Indians, we can make cool shit too" Idk, maybe I'm tone deaf, but the phrasing is just weird to me.

The dominance of cishet men in your recommendation playlist is sad to see as a queer artist. It's not your fault ofc but just hurts to face the realization that we've really not progressed as much as I naively assumed we had. It is hard to find your audience being Indian as it is but add on all this other stuff lol. Living in India, queer people didn't exist to me until I started listening to western music but brown queer people? Indian queer people making music? It is a very alien concept. I don't even know if there's any space for me. Can't put myself in any of these boxes because my music is not really Indian in any way but that also decreases my target audience in a country where people like me don't exist in the mainstream at all. I get why people make posts like ones in your video but honestly, it is so stupid because even the audience that they're attracting will only stay as long as they perfectly represent their Indianness and they will have to be in that box forever to keep those people still engaged Anyways, it was a nice video about a topic that no one really talks about and that's great to see! I just wanted to give my own thoughts as a singer-songwriter who just posts music on social media
Yo I appreciate the perspective. Just so you know I made that playlist months ago and rarely add songs to it. I mainly made it after the video on Mundian Ton Bach Ke blew up and I had people from all different parts of the world wanting to discover Desi music. And I agree it is a bit of an oversight on my part to not diversify the playlist a bit more even in terms of having diversity in the regions and gender. But let me know if there's artists who you listen to and can relate to and I'll be sure to check them out.
@TheBrownExperience ik. I don't blame you at all. I really appreciate that you even bothered to read and reply to my comment.
Yh definitely a lot of Indians behind the scenes doing well.
Hanumankind was born in india and has been living in india since 2012. His video 'big dawgs' was shot in his hometown Malappuram, kerala, india.

I think the big buzz around Charli XCX was a bit in part due to Fantano. Obviously Charli XCX dropped a banger but I think the big push around Brat was because Fantano wouldn't stop sucking off this album.

this really is just another entry into the endless trend of "guys look at my art because i'm [from xyz group]" instead of "guys look at my art because of the cool art i just made". i understand people want more diverse artists but whenever i see marketing that prioritizes the marginalized groups the artist is part of it just makes me feel like they're drawing so much attention to that aspect of their identity because they aren't making anything worth listening to/looking at/watching/reading otherwise. and this has been my experience. i can't speak to music as much because i'm generally not on ig and tiktok enough so i don't get any of this content but every time i see a book marketed with read this book by this marginalized author the book is garbage and they clearly only used that marketing tactic because they were hoping more people would care about diversity than the quality of the art. and i think people who rely on being indian to market their art are seriously overestimating the appeal that being indian has for the average music listener

It just feels like they're trying too hard to appeal to western audiences, so they say "have u ever seen an indian rapper/singer make music like THIS????"
Like, imagine if the statment was, "have you ever seen a disabled person play sports like THIS???
idk how to explain it. It COULD just be seen by the artist themselves as like " don't underestimate us Indians, we can make cool shit too"
Idk, maybe I'm tone deaf, but the phrasing is just weird to me.

I get why people make posts like ones in your video but honestly, it is so stupid because even the audience that they're attracting will only stay as long as they perfectly represent their Indianness and they will have to be in that box forever to keep those people still engaged
Anyways, it was a nice video about a topic that no one really talks about and that's great to see!
I wish I knew more queer indian artists but the algorithm isn't favorable enough for them that i'd be able to find them so easily either. Why? Everyone uses those terms in the UK and outside of India. I’m assuming you’re talking about HMK with the last part of your comment
Honestly I have a catch for “music artists” on TikTok or social media
