I used to have her playing these pieces and others on a four-disc set, vinyl LPs. It was an exciting adventure in piano. I'd never heard of Crochet or Faure before that. I did finally learn the A Minor Fugue, a very satisfying experience.

Beautiful shading, coloring, and articulating of each line. Very skillful manipulation of the pedals. Another excellent example of French pianism. I think that some of them were also used as sight reading tests for the conservatory- can you imagine? I don't know why everyone flocks to the fifth one, or "improvisation." The 1st, 7th, and 8th ones are also effective for recitals. It's not as if the counterpoint in the fugal ones is ever oppressive anyways; Faure always wears his learning lightly.
Listening to Faure's music after reading some symbolist poetry is also a good means of increasing it's effectiveness. Harmonie du soir (Baudelaire) might go well with the last one?

This would be a nightmare to sight read on an exam! I love the "improvisation" I will admit. It's on the RCM syllabus here in Canada, which probably explains some of its popularity. Although we don't hear much French other than the popular Ravel and Debussy.
