    Fascinating stuff, I love these tactical analysis videos. I was particularly impressed by how Wales swapped Biggar into the back field to give a better kicking option ad Pens chased his own kick.

      Thanks, Misty! Backfield management is such a massive part of the elite game, yet I see little if any analysis on it!

    Really liked this analysis, I have been trying to wrap my brain around using 13+2. Interested to see the 9/10/12. move out to the edge and 13/14 on the other edge.

    We are looking at moving to a 13 2 from a Pendulum. The biggest thing with the 9 in the line in that example is the lack of jockey cover in the 2nd line? What's your thoughts on that with the 9 flat in the line most of the time?

    Just one question, do you think that teams with this sistem (13-2) are trying to challenge the attack team to kick chips or grubbers? cause they are leaving that space behind the line. One nz coach told me that, they dont care about the chips or grubbers cause normally are a 50-50 to be recover by the attacking team. I like the 9 in that posicion like allblacks normally do. What do you think about that?

    • @tomascarrio2343

      as always awsome work and really clear concepts

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tomas, it's a case of trying to manage the variables. By being in this 13+2 shape their primary concern is protecting the touchlines so they are more prepared to allows the chips & grubbers. As you say the percentages aren't great for those kicks, although teams do concede when they do come off! Yeah I'm a fan of 9 in the channel, but I also like the 9 in the 7 position at the back of the lineout!

    Brilliant video! I have a suggestion! Is it possible to have the play-by-play on fullscreen while you are breaking it down? Like maybe editing yourself with a green screen at the corner of the video would be great!
    Nevertheless great video! Thank you

      Thanks for taking a look! Yes I agree that video needed more full screen in it. The Ospreys one I did was a better balance I think. The last 3 have just been the video without me in it. Trying to find a balance that works!

    Quality slides and coaching - would you apply this defensive structure in all parts of the field as default? Obviously as you mentioned, there are times the either of the back 2 would need to come up into the line, perhaps on the outer fringes i.e when the ball reaches the attacking wing. Thanks!

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for taking a look! It doesn't tend to be employed at all times. Generally you'd see it in phase play between the 22's. Most teams got to 14+1 closer to their own try line and will have a 12+3 in the opposition 22m. But there's huge variation depending on whether it's a scrum, lineout, restart, the situation of the game, who the opposition are etc.!

    Do you prefer a 13-2 or a pendulum Geraint? Which do you think is more effective?

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I prefer a 13+2 as a pendulum is a feature of the system too, mainly when the defence get exposed out wide, so the backfield player has to push up. The issue of a pendulum for me is the constant unnecessary moving & the issue of leaving potentially more grass exposed near the touch lines!

    • @Headhunter_212
      @Headhunter_212 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeraintDaviesGDD I'm curious to see the analytics on 13+2 vs. pendulum.
      Qs: Does the pendulum (or 13+2) tend to give up more short clearances (due to being hurried by chasers) resulting in better field position for attacking lineouts?
      Same Q: for 22 dropouts or other bad results (turnovers, adverse tries) for the defending team, i.e. the team receiving or chasing down kicks?

  • @martinwebdale7373

    Really good video. Out of interest how would you get 10 into the back field instead of 9?

    • @GeraintDaviesGDD
      @GeraintDaviesGDD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some teams (Scarlets/Argentina) put the 10 in the channel so he can drop when the threat has past. Some drop the 10 from kick offs, & kick exits etc (Wales do this). Biggar was in the back field by phase 3 & that’s fairly typical!
