When I was 13 I created my own football club that my parents ran and we got hammered for a solid year. Things started to click after then and our first ever win was an away game to Renton boys club, we won 4-3 with a last minute goal and being 32 now this video brings back memories with you visiting Renton. Keep up the good work Sam some great content here.
Hi Sam. Great videos! I live in Canada and my Mum was born in Alexandria (which is in the Vale) and my Dad was born in Dumbarton. My Papa played for Dumbarton in the 1920s after playing for Celtic and a few teams in England. My Dad pointed out the Renton Club the last time we were in Scotland. You have a real zest for the footy stories and you've got fans over the pond that love the content. Keep it going!
Hiya Sam, I like the old football teams, that's not in the scottish or English football leagues anymore, I like it when you read the Scottish F.A Cup was awarded to Rangers as Vale Of Leithan didn't arrive for the replay, my favourite vlogs are Third Lanark and St Bernards, keep up the good content, This is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
For many years I paid little attention to Scottish football beyond the results on a Saturday afternoon. Thanks for showing there's so much more to it than a handful of clubs in the SPL.
Vale are my local team stayed there all my life until 3 years ago I moved away. Cousin is the Vale GK. Love watching a game down at their pitch, superb Sam 👌🏻
Smashing vid, Sam. The Vale/Dumbarton also has strong links in the genesis of the Old Firm: Rangers formed 1872 by Moses McNeil (born Rhu and died in Dumbarton) while Celtic’s first ever goal scorer was Neilly McCallum in 1888 in a 5-2 win against Rangers - born and buried in Bonhill, Vale of Leven. Good job.
Certainly an area that was important to the early days of football in Scotland. Dumbarton also celebrating the 150th birthday (December 23rd) and we've got a home game on Dec 24th. Sure there will be plenty announced nearer the time. Sadly the Vale of Leven juniors were one of the smaller junior teams. Try and get to a couple of games a season when it doesnt clash with Dumbarton or hockey commitments. Clubs like Vale of Leven could be really important in keeping football affordable and accessible to a lot of folk who aren't able to follow a big team. Still a place in football for sides like The Vale.
Renton Craigandro play on what was public recreation ground (South Park) in 1870s. The original Tontine Park was across the road, now covered by a housing estate. However, one of the original penalty spots can be seen situated in a garden on the estate.
On the subject of Dumbarton. I went up there with Annan. I just have to say I thought it was a brilliantly welcoming and friendly place. A really good football watching experience. Sure Annan got thrashed but it I was really pleased that I went. Excellent video

Leith athletic are still going, they play on the park @ the bottom of Easter rd. My uncle played against them when he was At Dunfermline Athletic,( possibly Stenhousemuir) back in the mid to late 1940’s or early 50’s. He also played against Jock Stein when the latter was at Albion Rovers. And he played in the very 1st floodlit match in Scotland which was at Stenhousemuir, believe it or not, the 1st league side to have floodlights and the Warriors played the very famous Hibs side of the time with the likes of Willie Ormandy, ( a local boy) & Eddie Turnball. The score was Stenhousemuir 3 Hibernian 5. That was in November 1951. In the match report there was mention of the press cameras flashing disturbing the respective goalkeepers particularly at corners. They sold 7500 tickets for the game but due to the foggy conditions only 4500 turned up, I’m surmising that it wud be a rather chilly November evening as well. 😂
Good stuff but laughed at half the story about 1888, correct Celtic were formed but never heard anything about them stealing Rentons best player Kelly and doing a "moonlight" with them as Renton were amateur and Celtic could offer him wages. I am of course a Rangers supporter originally from Renton so only right I mischievously fill in the full story 😉😁. Info is from a brilliant book The Old Firm by Bill Murray
