I still remember A Blurred Line and how I waited for the End of the Line. The story was kind of like a futuristic noir story that created many questions. How you're the actual bad guy and the bad guys are the ones trying to stop you from causing some kind of destruction. Very gray concepts for that time.

Final Fantasy Endless Nova was likely inspired by Final Fantasy 7. Damn. It was the first RPG Maker game where you gained stats not by leveling but by the actions you've taken. More damage you take and recover from the more likely your Max HP increased for instance or the more you attack the more likely your attack power increased.

Such a nostalic trip for me, at the time (2001) i was introduced to RPGM2K, and i was blown away, being a fan of rpgs since childhood, to be able to make your own game without knowing difficult programming...was like a dream come true, and i was hooked for years, making a few games in 2k and 2k3, that sadly were lost forever. Then i lost interest as time passed, i had other stuff in life and never touched the program, now as a married man, with kids and a stable life, this august while in vacation i remembered that i had RPGM VX Ace, and began using it to see what have changed in all these years, and that interest piked and now i'm back again making a game.
Seeing these amazing games, and others from other communities inspires me so much, there is still love for these fanmade stories and worlds.

I'll definitely have to check a lot of these out! The oldest games I played were Random's Story, Jennifer's Quest, and Ahriman's Prophecy but I'm not sure if those were on the obscure or actually pretty popular side for the time!

Man. That was a great video. I first used RM95 (or some version of it) when I was 8 or 9 years old. When I was a preteen I would browse all the RM forums. GamingW and GGZ were the two I frequented a lot. I would always be blown away by the things that people could create back then. The Way was so impressive at the time. There's a few I would have added as well. Wilfred the Hero (it has art by the same guy that made Sunset Over Imdahl) , Grave Spirit, and Fey are three that come to mind that are a bit "newer" than these but still great! :) Overall a solid list and a really enjoyable, nostalgic ride. I'd love to see more like this!

I didn't know what Suikoden was but I knew what Legion Saga was. And damn Legion Saga I, II, III were all amazing. I just can't tell you how much I loved them. One of the main reasons people loved it was the large assortment of characters and that the guy making it actually completed them. Amazing stories all of them. I think people loved Legion Saga 2 the most and I can see why but I think all three were amazing. Too bad Legion Saga R was never completed.

As a longtime rpg maker user, of these list I played the way, yume nikki, ff:endless nova and all 3 legion saga. I think "Yume Nikki" is slightly overrated to be honest, "Endless Nova" is funny and very faithful to the FF franchise, alas too short for an rpg. "The Way" I remeber was kinda impressive when it came out, and finally as a old school suikoden fan, "Legion Saga" is probably my favorite of the bunch

Lately I've become obsessed with RPG-Maker videos again.
I find it interesting to see Vampires Dawn on the list, because I never assumed that most of the classic German RPG-Maker games ever found their way to non-German players, because I never heard anyone from the international community really speaking about them. Though I have to admit, many of them were also just pure trash games xD
But I would recommend "Velsabor". It's sadly only a demo and will never be finished but it's good and I think there was also an English version available. It's from the same guys that also made CrossCode.
Other than that, I remember playing a translated version of "Sunset over Imdahl", and being confused with the protagonist's name "Lohn" as it is literally the German word for salary xD And I found Yume Nikki just some years before it's Steam rerelease.

But it's undeniable that this game had a huge influence in the German RPG Maker community, as I can confirm.
Not only was it one of the first big ones to ever appear here and the first contact point with RPG-Maker games for many, but it was even promoted in gaming magazines (and distributed on included CDs) and also spawned like a thousand of rip-off games and single-handedly made the RTP figure Klaus (the guy that Valnar is based off) become the most used RPG protagonist, going even so far that this RTP character becoming somewhat of a meme.
When it came out, I was fascinated by this game and made me try out RPG-Maker, but nowadays I really have to admit it did not age that well and I probably wouldn't rank it high on the list of Maker games you have to play.
