  • Thanks for your interest in this piece! If you want the score, please send email to pan.xingzimin@hotmail.com, and I'll send the PDF score to you :)
    Composer: Xingzimin Pan
Performer: Rocio Lima Guaman (flute), Xingzimin Pan (piano)
Russell Hall Graham Hall, Cedar Falls, IA, Mar. 27. 2013
Kaidan is originally a Japanese word ("怪談"), which generally means horror story or ghost story. Rather than telling a specific one, this composition tries to evoke a more common atmosphere and emotional experience associated with a number of stories of this type. In order to do so, the composer explores extended techniques for both piano and flute. In addition, the melody from a traditional Chinese folk song, Ku Qi Qi (哭七七,"Seven Periods of Crying"), has been used as material in this composition. The purpose of this song is to mourn the dead, placate and pay homage to the departed spirit.

Great piece! The comment section, though, shows the state of communication these days. The composer offers to share the PDF with the score if interested people write him to a provided email, and still half of the comments are asking about how to get the score. It's in the description of the piece!!!

Haven't seen a flute piece quite like this before, even among the countless works of the 20th/21st century.

This is like modern art all over again. What is the definition of music? Is it different for each person?
I can't imagine that any of this can be considered music someone would listen to for enjoyment.

It would work great in a movie soundtrack though. Atmospheric sound effects are a kind of music that is invisible to most people.

You have to listen to music in progressive stages; otherwise, the lack of context (sonorities) won't make any sense as your brain literally won't find any connections thus preventing you from forming any aesthetic perspective. In this case, it's best to listen to Debussy/Ravel > Messiaen > Takemitsu > this piece and others like it.

Depends on what you mean by enjoyment. I get a kick out of it because it's interesting, but I wouldn't blast it in my car.

Hi Conrad, sorry for the very late reply. I was in China for three months, where the youtube has been blocked by the government. So I wasn't able to get access to here. Regarding your question, I just type in everything possible in sibelius, then export the scores as images, then edit the images in paintbrush. It really took me a long time!
