I love your content and thank you for helping me learn enough design to enhance my business. I'm a contractor struggling with debt and I'm hoping to be able to use my design knowledge to enhance the things that I create. I also like how this opens my imagination to building using more materials than just contruction. I can now imagine build in metal, plastics, and acrylic. Much appreciated! I promise to give you some mullah as soon as I am not struggling to pay all my bills. I promise.
I know this is an older vid but there's a faster way than grouping and exploding the components. You can do the same thing by selecting and using the solid tools Outer Shell function. I also have a library of components for standard hole patterns i use all the time. In addition, once the pattern is run through outer shell, you can always scale it for depth even if it's just a group.
I've seen the solid tools and played around with them but never knew how to use them properly until now - Thanks for another excellent tutorial Justin, I've now signed up to SketchUp Essentials. 👍 5⭐'s
weird... I just did a bastardized version of this yesterday to make openings in a ceiling for pot lights. your method is much more streamlined and way quicker! thanks so much :)
What I still don't understand is why SketchUp turns a solid component into a solid group after applying a Boolean operation to it. Thank you to the person who will be able to solve this mystery!
Thanks for this video Justin it has helped me solve a current problem with creating an array of holes .I know this is an older video but I think my question is still relevant to SU22 Pro. I do as you suggested and make a copy that I set off to the side just in case I need to get back to where I was easily. My question is does SketchUp have a clipboard where you can temporarily save multiple objects then go back and retrieve them. I have done this by move copies onto another layer(tag) but if you keep those your file gets bloated. I am thinking of a clipboard that lasts only for the session or until you close SketchUp.
I have created a brick wall and it is a solid. I am trying to punch holes through it using another solid and the subtract tool as you have done in this video. Most of the time it works but for some reason I have one model where it is giving me a lot of trouble. The shape representing the hole becomes part of the wall without punching a hole through. Any thoughts?
wow, great tipp!! thx a lot!! could you take me to the next level and explain how to do this on a cylinder where the holes go thru the center? More precise, imagine an empty can where you drill a bunch of holes thru both "walls". My Problem is the round shape, its impossible because i want a 90 degree angle on every hole but every hole has his own angle because of the round shape of the cylinder. hope u understand what i'm trying to say
Justin, I have just the opposite, 3 individual solids that I need to cut several holes though. I tried grouping the the 3 solids that the holes need to be subtracted from, grouping, exploding etc, doesn't work. Or am I going about it wrongly? Thanks
Is there an easy way to elongate an "Existing" hole in a design? What's the best way to make an elongated hole without going to all the trouble of making a rectangle and adding curves at each end? Thanks?
@@Thesketchupessentials No, I have tried using scale and it makes the hole into an oval which looks very unprofessional. I guess I just have to delete it and make a slot from scratch. What about a tool or extension to "replace." For example a project with 20x 3mm holes and then the customer says he wants them all 5mm holes. What is the quickest way to change them all?
@@Thesketchupessentials It is compatible with all SketchUp versions. it works like this. they create a body, group that, then draw a 2d geometric figure, it does not matter what. parallel to the body, then highlight this figure, then print on Hole on Solid. then it will be cut. can also cut several figures at the same time. can show in the next video. and have fun with it !!!!
Hi I left you a comment on over of your videos last week but I've not yet seen a reply. It was posted over one year ago. So maybe you don't read them any more
Good morning everyone! Let me know what you've used solid tools for in the comments! :)
For making drawer holes

I'm a teacher and I use your videos to help kids learn all the time. You've been so helpful and I love how you explain things. Thank you

Justin you are awesome! You just saved me an hour with a five minute video.

Thanks very much - really glad you liked it!

I'm always looking for new ways to cut holes through thick objects. Thank you.

This is kind of like the Pathfinder in Adobe illustrator. Cool!

Thank you for making this tutorial. I remember asking about this
Glad you liked it!
Thanks Justin!
any tips on making it faster? I have about a 20x15 grid of holes that's been taking a couple hours to subtract with no signs of progress.
Could these be threaded holes?
thanks man! you save my work night!
Glad it helped!
I mainly use solid tools for cutting roof shapes together or cutting volumes out of terrain.
Nice - I like both of these ideas! :)
Where can I find that tool in the 2023 version please?
I'm trying to figure out a fast way to draw adjustable shelf holes that only go half way through the cabinet side panel
Thanks for sharing. It's surprising how often a bank of holes is needed.
Yep - as long as your models are solids, this is a really easy way to get them :)
Thanks for the help
Happy to help!
Thanks!! You just save me right now
REALLY REALLY THANK YOUUUUUUU
You're welcome!

Like selecting the geometry and using the scale tool on it?

BoolTools does this just making groups out of the plate and the "holes" no exploding!
u are just awesome loved every video of yours:)
your solid man. thanks!
No problem!
THANKS
how do you copy the hole so fast
Great tip thanks for that
Thanks for watching!
Very Useful.... Thanks
👍
Do you know a tool "hole on solid"? so it's better to cut something. if you do not have SketchUp pro
Never tried it - does it work SketchUp 2017?

thank u
Secret : solid tools works sort of in sketchup make 2017.
Please with what app
It’s in the title of the video…
thanks man
Thanks for watching!
........... Thank you so much sir . ....
👍
I think it's easier way that the plugin fixit-101 makes this
Will have to try that
Intercepta un plano y extruir.
When making group of multiple solid component that group doesn’t form a solid group
Correct - you can't have a solid with a bunch of grouped geometry inside of it
Hi I left you a comment on over of your videos last week but I've not yet seen a reply. It was posted over one year ago. So maybe you don't read them any more
I read all my comments, but that doesn't mean I respond within an hour of them being posted. Please don't leave the same comment on multiple videos
He is high 100%
Ummm...no
well my is forming a cylinder lol
