Hi Colin - thank you for your video. It reminded me of Ifton as I remember it as a child. I grew up in St Martins and my Dad and Grandads worked at Ifton. My Grandad died in the Pit on 28th Dec 1931 aged 29 years. I often wish there was a memorial to those who lost their lives and to acknowledge all the miners who worked there. I know there is the memorial garden, but it seems to be more of a cut through. It sometimes seems as if the Shropshire coalfields never existed but you never know, perhaps the Parish Council will honour them all one day.

Thank you for this post. I found it very thought provoking about how easy it is to take the important work that so many people have done for granted. We should definitely honour them in some way.

HI Ruth, we have put a statue up in the memorial garden with a list of the men who died at the pit. hope your Grandad is on the plaque.

Hello Colin. What memories this video brought back. I was also an apprentice at Ifton and started about the same year as you as a Fitter. I worked at one point in the 16's area underground and remember riding on the cable belt that used to be in the incline. I moved up to Florence Colliery to finish my apprenticeship, with Pete Walsh John Davies and Roger. My Dad used to run the bus from Glynceiriog brining the miners to work. I moved down to Cornwall to work in the tins mines, and eventually ended up in Ghana West Africa, working in the Gold Mines here. I am now a partner in a Hydraulic hose business here at the moment, but hoping to retire back to Cornwall at the end of the year. Will be 68yrs then. I wonder how many of us are still around. Thanks for some wonderful memories. Best regards. Phil Phillips
