No it's called Dupuytren's Contracture. It's a northern European deformity that is inherited. I had surgery but it didn't help. I have to live with it and try to, adjust my playing to the limitation.
I'm sorry about that maestro. I would still look for opinions of many many physicians before giving up hope. I had an injury and it took many years and plenty of determination to find the right doctor and to get it fixed. Still, you make it unnoticeable with your technique and ability. God bless you!

14:01 did you mean to say G -> E7 was apart of the cycle of fifths? I’m trying to understand the progression, but you also say in the video that G -> F7#11 -> E7 that the F7(#11) is the tritone substitute. Wouldn’t it be the tritone sub for E7 be Bb7? I just found the logic/theory confusing there, but it all sounded great in your playing! Curious for a reply of what is actually going on though and why it works? Is it just a chromatic approach down adding a dominant chord from a half step above the target dominant chord?
I envy your ability to play tenths Kent, I can't reach them. Ninths are my limit but I love the open sound of the tenth. At 74 arthritis and general stiffness just won't allow it. Enjoy watching you make it look so simple. Are you going to do a music download for Sweet Loraine?
I used a lead sheet. I could download it if it would help. Most of the time when I play 10ths I break them...so this is possible even if you don't have a big LH. I have some arthritis too but mostly RH. Thanks for the comment.
I just came back from New Orleans where heard Sweet Lorraine and I fell in love with it. In searching for a piano arrangement, yours is really great. I'm 72 with limited skills, I can't deal with the stride rhythm, but can roll the 10ths. I have a std lead sheet and your video, but a lead sheet of your arrangement would really help. Thanks, and again, great arrangement!
Hey Kent, I just want to thank you for this video, and all of he others you did. You are really a great piano player, and even greater teacher. And, ... most of all, you're One Cool Cat!!! I love your style and sense of humor. I too am a piano player and vocalist, and have made a living playing music, which is really such a blessing. I mainly accompanied myself, played bass pedals too, and did some basic solos, etc. but also had great 'cats' with me, sax, trumpet, etc. to do solos as well. Oh, BTW, your alter ego ain't too bad either! Love to hear a duet with the both of you someday. That's a great question. I don't study Hank Jones, but I did transcribe one of his solos from the album ; "Portrait of Duke" by Dizzy Gillespie. It's one of my favorite albums, Claire Fischer did the arrangements. Hank plays some great solos on that album. I haven't learned that solo but I might try, now that you've asked. If so I'll do a video. He was a great master, underrated in a way. He must have played on 100's of records. Get that album!!

it is very cool to hve all that knowledge imbued in your brain, so you can naturally pull them off without even thinking... i'd have to think really hard to make the associations (I actually can't pull almost any haha even if thinking very hard)! :-)
There is a video of the Cole band doing this in 1963. It kinda captivated me, and now I can play it on piano alone but it doesn't have the same effect as if when a band would be backing me. :(

The ADEM's views on jam etiquette are that there is no etiquette. It's every man for himself. The one who is the loudest and most boisterous will succeed. He was at the Tin Palace in NYC for a jazz jam session once and the sax players were lined up on the bandstand and when it was time for the solo, the loudest most boisterous player took over and played the first solo. There's no room for hesitation or "wall flower"attitude. Obnoxious behavior is paramount. Also it is important to play your solo as long as humanly possible so that no other player has a chance. It is suggested that one hour solos are best. Of course, you realize that the KH would not approve of this behavior, he's too cultured and respectful.

I'm a marginally trained classical pianist who wished for more theory and less sight reading but was afraid to ask (mostly because I didn't know better as a lad and those nuns as teachers were a bit acerbic!) Thanks for the reply! Yeah I saw the super-locrian video! I meant the actual hexatonic augmented scale. It's essentially 3 major triads a major third apart. In E it would be: E Fx G# B C D#. Or, R #2 3 5 b6 7. It's an incredible scale that Coltrane absolutely abused. It works over any place that has an augmented chord in it (starting on the 9 of melodic minor, 3 of altered, or the root of maj7#5 like you suggested). The reason I suggest Nardis is because it's bizarre opening melody is actually constructed from the augmented hexatonic scale.
Oh and in the example I gave in E, you can see the 3 triads a major third apart if you respell it enharmonically: E G# B + Ab C Eb + C E G. Gives you all 6 of the tones.

Totally 2 different technique...playing solo or in a trio. It's good to be versatile and play both styles.
