Thank you for the great tutorial! I soaked my MAF sensor in a little plastic bottle full of MAF cleaner for about 15 minutes. By eye, the MAF didn’t appear too grimy, but the cleaning fluid was dingy and had some black specs in it after the soak. EGR code went away after a few cycles and is staying off. I’m learning this D-Max Chevy Express Van, again thank you again for the education!
MAF cleaning- a method I've always used- is get a 2"-3" tall plastic or metal tube with a bottom, insert the MAF, straw spray your cleaner till it more than covers the resistors, let sit 10-15 minutes, take it out, then spray with 10 second shots- using the aerosol to power away the gunk- haven't used a Q-tip at all, and it *always* works. *Soaking is the key.*
Only way to do it correctly. What's a can- $6? Why spritz more on your clipboard than the evaporated Q-tip- and dangerously drag it on a delicate tungsten filament, doing nearly nothing? C'mon now. Soak it 10 minutes, blow it off with the cleaner, done.
I have a 07 Duramax it has an edge tuner on it!!! Runs like a streak!! Have had no issues other than glow plugs that wear out!! Dealers don't like it, but I don't go to dealer to have it worked on!! Gets good mileage when not pulling! Blows smoke like they should!! 😊😊😊
Eric and family thanks for a great case study which was presented in a clear manner as clear as the sun light with technical data for the activities of sensors. In California we are getting tested on this matter subject to update our repair licenses. You are a blessing to us all. thanks, and happy holidays to you all.
I don't get hardly any Duramax diesels so it was an interesting informative video. Nice touch with the calibration codes...keeps you from chasing an issue solved with a software update. Nice diagnosis!
Great video Eric was just watching another one of your vids when this popped up. I have no idea how to you keep your workflow so smooth yet manage to film, edit and upload as much content as you do. All the best mate
This is wonderful. I have wondered for decades how an engine can work. I mean the intake valve is open for less than 1/100th of a second @ 3000 rpm. If the engine is 2 liters than every second it draws 50 liters of air, and that has a mass of 50gms. This has bothered me for years. It is nice to see my math is correct.
I'm gonna have to come back and watch this one again to get it all straight. You said the monitors had run but the Autel showed 'not ran'. Probably my ignorance. lol Thanks!
I applaud your professionalism. If it was a buddy I’d take him outside and whisper to him “egr blocker and finger stick” and send him a few how-to videos
@@vincerobertson1214 the finger stick is just a device that tells the truck’s ecm that the egr is functioning as it should to avoid a check engine light. Though, if you have an LLY it may be just fine to block it and not buy a finger stick. That’s what I’ve done and hasn’t thrown codes yet (been a few months and about 15k miles).
Learned alot on this one. Have nearly zero experience with diesels, aside from 30 -60 year old farm tractors - and just basic stuff there. Great one - thanks for posting! I LOL'ed at your BOX comment ... bwaahahahahahaa! That was funny! :D A Chivy salvage yard, HAHAHA! They'll keep us employed, that's for sure! I've got an '02 1500HD I just did an A/C overhaul on (compressor, drier, etc.). Clutch was so worn it must've had an 1/8" gap - before it leaked out due to a crusty seal on the condenser vapor inlet, you'd have to whack the compressor to get it to run, lol. Lots of rust on this one, but not bad shape at all for a 15 year old GM product, shockingly enough.
Mr .O we all saw the grease on your pinkey while performing the classic ROR , even the birds were laughing in the back ground ! Just kidding been subbed a while ! You guys are awsome together ! Keep it up I'll keep liking ! 👍
For me personally the LLY engine diagnostics are very interesting (I have the same engine in my 05). I'll be cleaning the MAF and I know for a fact I don't have an OEM air clearning. The check engine light is not illuminated but no eason not to stay ahead of the game. Thanks Eric!
Working at Walmart as an Auto Care Technician, I have definitely seen much dirtier air filters in diesels. Walmart does carry Fram as their filter contractor for air filters, but Fram has 2 levels of filters. 1st is the Fram Extra Guard, their basic filter, and 2nd is the Fram Ultra Synthetic which is their premium air filter. When I replace filters, if I know it's going out into the oil patch in North Dakota, or seeing a lot of dirt road usage, and if it's a service type rig, like this one, I'll use the Ultra Synthetic. If it's someones town driver, I'll use the Extra Guard. But I will also offer an option and recommend the Ultra Synthetic for it's better filtration characteristics. Walmart just started carrying the Super Tech line of air filters too, but we went into shutdown with the Auto Care Center due to Covid19 right when we got them, so I haven't had a chance to install any or see how they work compared to Fram. There are a lot of good air filters out there, stick to a name brand and you'll be fine. (incidentally, AC Delco and Wix/Napa Gold are also good filters, but you never see a comparison between Wix/Napa Gold, K & N, Mobil 1 against a Fram Ultra Synthetic filter. They always compare them to the Fram Extra Guard and poo poo Fram for their inferior filter compared to the other premium branded filters. I wonder why that is............................)
When you get a vehicle in that has "updates" available do you typically just go ahead and do the update(s) or do you ask the customer first, and if so, do you charge for each update, or is it included in scan time/diagnostic charges ? Also Would you recommend cleaning the MAF as a general maintenance task eg: once a year kind of thing, or wait till you have an issue? Thanks for the videos and the great info you post.
In this case the updates were part of the repair but there is a "programming fee" and a "diagnosis fee" Typical programmings are $95 and diagnosis of any sort is a one hour minimum @ $70. As far as cleaning the MAF I typically do it for customers when ever I replace an air filter.
Darned groupies interrupting you all the time! That was not so satisfying. When you noted the MAF readings at 4:00 , you opened the EGR to only 20% which accounted for the 22 g/s. After cleaning the MAF the readings were about the same but a little steadier. At 14:20 when you re-checked, the g/s at 20% was still around 22. So you weren't kidding about the sensitivity to air filters ( and maybe the miniscule change from cleaning the MAF). Was hoping for something more definitive like a rodent in the EGR line... Still, good info to know. Thank you, Sensei.
Great vid as usual. Had a guy in with money light on. Diagnosis ,"Air Filter". Asked when last checked/changed ?. Not since owned vehicle. Any who, 60k miles later. Only code that showed. "we" are not allowed to reset code. "wink wnk" According to this vid and others, he may be back lol. Did not see said air filter, but I'd hate to imagine. We tried to convince him we weren't laughing at, but with him. lol. All guys should know better....right? Keep them coming Eric.
Yo Eric O. I was finally able to follow up with this video terminology for once. normally I get lost pretty quickly not today. Anyhow thanks for this video A +
"Fast And Furious!" Great Video! Mrs. O In the video = icing on the cake! Where's Sheba? Learned something new about Duramax EGR and MAF relationship when testing. Great!

gotta love Duramax diesel!!! LLY engines! I own one, mileage at 237,000 miles! but I didn't have EGR issues like that before, I wonder if it's specific or common issue?
Electronic Engineer myself and my opinion: If the mass airflow sensor cleaner can't clean it then nothing wrong trying some carb or brake clean. You have to replace it it anyway if you can't get it clean and it's not reporting properly.
though that may be true in some cases, he says that every time he gets a job he doesn't want to do, including gas vehicles. The vehicle will never come into the shop, goes out with the Tech2 and comes back in a minute later.
So EGR diagnostic trouble code = dirty MAF. I recently had a oxygen sensor dtc and the problem was low coolant. Taking dtcs at face value can be costly.
Eric O. I was always told that youre never supposed to touch the resistor wire in the Mass airflow sensor. I always use CRC Mass airflow sensor cleaner and just spray it directly on the wire. Mine have never been super dirty/black so im not sure how much it really cleaned it. Let me know
Out of necessity today....do you like electronic fixes or old school wrench fixes from back in the day. Is all the electronics make for a better engine tuning???
Eric, according to Wells Tech, cleaning MAFs with cleaner still damages the coating on the resistor. However they also state, using cleaner is better than a nothing. They further state, if the customer agrees, it is better to replace the sensor with a new one. What's your opinion on this debate?
Used MAF cleaner for many years without issue, if you notice he used a Q tip and didn't soak it with solvent. MAF Sensor on my vehicle cost $120-$150 why not try and clean it first like Eric did? They want you to buy new MAF not clean them.
Leo Guy : As I and Wells Tech stated, it is up to the customer to have it cleaned or replaced. Wells Tech ran tests on cleaning MAFs and reviewed the results under 100× magnification, and they found the coating was damaged. That is not to say the MAF will not work after cleaning. As for cleaning with a cotton tip, it is more risky than not physically touching it. You state you have been cleaning MAFs for years, have you verified the results of cleaning versus replacing: ie, engine load % in relation to gm/s?
I've had good results cleaning maf sensors over the years, a few didn't respond and had to be replaced. The maf in my own Tahoe was cleaned over 60k ago and is still ok. I think if you used a mild approved cleaner and aren't aggressive(shop air 120psi!) most can live again. That's just my experience.
Wells likes to sell MAF's, second they know most folks are spastic looking parts jammers and they'd break the things with the spray straw or hit them with compressed air, blowing the sensors right out :)
During first EGR test you've only opened valve to 20%, not 30% . And during second test you've got identical 22g/s when you briefly got it at 20%. MAF cleaning didn't do anything seems to me
Good stuff Eric, one of my neighbors has a Duramax with a P0401 code but it doesn't bother him since no one cares about the money light here in Central PA lol. Now I'm curious, what fixed it...the MAF cleaning or the new filter? Weird to see the MAF reading drop from 36g/sec to only 26g/sec on the 100% EGR open self-test at the end, while with bidirectional, a 30% EGR command resulted in MAF dropping from 38g/sec to 20g/sec. But the truck is happy and so is the customer :)
I had 2010 in the shop with similar issues the other day and it would trip the light at 41g/sec just like clock work at an idle no EGR. Cleaned MAF and installed OEM filter after that it would read 37g/sec at idle, no more light. After a little research I found that 41 was the threshold for them. High flow aftermarket air filters really mess with these newer ones 07 up.
Those same codes will pop up if there is an exhaust issue as well or if someone put a high performance exhaust because there is insufficient back pressure to push the gasses from exhaust to the intake as a result of the free flowing exhaust system. This can occur with cat back OR full exhaust systems.
Super helpful Mr. O. Because it was a day off, I did the same procedure on my 04 LLY -no codes and newish filter. Before cleaning I got 24 g/s at 100%, 18 g/s at 30% and 38 g/s at 0. The MAF wires were shinny to begin with after q-tipping I rechecked the numbers which stayed the same, except 39 g/s at 0%. Not really a fix but a learning experience, did not know about the MAF working for the EGR. This is my latest Chevy and first diesel, fortunately it isn't headed for the scrap yard...yet. What HD diesel and year what would you get? Thank you both for the hard work and don't forget to take a vacation now and then!
watched you short intro and you cap has been thru alot.If that cap ruins I know your going to go thru withdrawls. I know I did On a couple. One I actually fixed sing JB WELD still got it. But hasnt been washed tho.
When I did injectors on my CA LB7, I discovered a pinched line near the vacuum pump that had been causing an EGR MIL. Easy fix. Does the LLY have the same EGR system (including cooler) as my LB7?
Hey Eric another excellent lesson ... I know your a busy man , but if by any chance is there a pick up truck make , you recommend or would buy if you were to purchase one ? Any suggestions anybody ? Thanks
Seems like you are using the Autel more than the other diagnostic tools lately. Can I assume it is your favorite? I matters to me as I am trying to decide which tool to buy
Have you thought about getting the Autel J2534? I think you can do the programming directly from the Maxisys. I don't know how yet, or if you need additional software. Or maybe you still need a PC to do the programming. I haven't been able to find much info on it, but I haven't looked very hard.
Mike Edwards you can do programming with the Bluetooth autel adapter he used in the video you just have to use a PC with USB cable. I have a cardaq M but I tried with the Autel VCI just for the hell of it and worked like a charm. Just had to install the Autel Pc software suite. Cardaq is the only one I fully trust but it's nice to have a backup
Where are you? I have same problem with my duramax 03 some mechanics trying to find the problem but cannot find the problem is same code p0401 and p0404 the check engine light is on I apréciate if you give me some tips
Thanks for this vid, stumbled onto you and becoming a fan. Ive got an 05 lly orig owner, living a no-tow, charmed life in San Diego 90k. Not knowing what I would find, and not wanting to clean it... called it maint and replaced with new AC/Delco f/ Amazon. Can you comment on X66P and balance rates? Thanks.
Would love to see a repair or replacement of a Duramax turbocharger....the variable vane issue...Looks like I may have to fix mine, I refuse to spend the money to replace it. the dealer wants $4,500 for the job!!
Shivy salvage yard, sounds like my backyard...lol. It's better now, 3 for 3 are up and running. The down vehicle is More Obsolete Parts and Rust...lol.
I am sure those cheap oiled gauze air filters would fail when they fill up with dirt which they do easily. I prefer the stock paper filter. Much easier to replace.
Hi there awesome video!! I know the thread is older but hoping you still cruise the comments ... I have a similar issue with my 2007.5 lmm I replaced the cooler, valve and motor.. will this procedure you did here be considered a re learn? I've read a couple blogs stating I would need a re learn. Any help is appreciated!
yes too long to type the differences between app and buying the whole Launch system. I do know from what I can tell you need to buy the Launch bluetooth dongle to use the app.
The autel seems to be a good tool.i have a verus pro but looking at a second tool as one does different functions than the other do you agree and which model do you use,,,cheers
Do you happen to know if the 2003 has the same EGR system as the O4? My local shop cannot seem to get my P1404 code resolved and I would love to point them to this video if it applies. Thanks and great video!!
I have been wondering the same thing… My 07 Duramax only has 195k, but last year it’s been doing same thing, But only when I have a heavy load & pushing it a little, like traveling 75mph with full horse trailer & start up a hill, it is prawn to jump into limp mode. I had thought it was just low fuel pressure, so I have put an aftermarket fuel pump system…Fass. And it has helped & slightly increased power but eventually got into situation where the limp mode came into affect again,.. I have found now that I can pull over, switch it off for 2-3 mins then crank it up and it’s good to go again, Prior to learning this I had replaced several factory fuel filters, thinking that was the source of my lack of fuel pressure. But my check engine light has been on for several years, of which it was running fine with no outwardly signs of issues & no limp mode until this past year.
I'm in the market for a truck and based on your videos with all these chevy, dodge, and ford repairs on almost new trucks give or take a few years, I'm really leaning towards the Toyota tundra. That and the diminished value on American trucks/cars is horrendous compared to the Japanese manufactures...
South Main Auto Repair well I have a 2017 crv touring model that i use mostly to haul my dog when we go fishing and whatnot. I myself am a honda guy but unfortunately they don't make a truck besides the ridgeline and the bed is not to my liking which is why I'm leaning towards the tundra
how much is the update software usaly go for? this would be a handy tool for the shop although we have updated a good chunk of our fleet and still have warranty on most
I have an 05 LLY and mine is showing the same codes, P0404, P0401cranked this morning and ran for 5 seconds and won’t start Changed the air filter and cleaned MAF and still won’t crank. Changed the MAF and still nothing. Batteries good Any suggestions?
South Main Auto Repair I'm not in your neighborhood, but I put a DSP and programming on my Duramax because I like to tinker. That's also why I love your videos. If I ever had a need to take it to a shop I would either put the stock tune back on first, or make sure I let them know about the custom tunes. I am new to diesel tunes. Are the custom tunes separate from the calibration updates, or does each tune have its own set of calibration files?
Thank you for the great tutorial! I soaked my MAF sensor in a little plastic bottle full of MAF cleaner for about 15 minutes.
Short answer is we clean while we can and replace when we have to. Some of these MAF's are 100's of dollars so if cleaning works then we do that.
MAF cleaning didn't do anything seems to me
Got me one of those astro worklights and love it. You have had plenty of duramax vids, would like to see some 7.3's . Gotta have some up north.
I wanted to see the new air filter!
Lots of good info here. Thanks!
another good one, I think what the wife was saying was to get the lead out and get back to work.....lol.
When I did injectors on my CA LB7, I discovered a pinched line near the vacuum pump that had been causing an EGR MIL.
Easy fix.
Does the LLY have the same EGR system (including cooler) as my LB7?
another great video Eric o
Good job Eric, I always use b 12 seems to work good also. Sam
Hey Eric another excellent lesson ... I know your a busy man , but if by any chance is there a pick up truck make , you recommend or would buy if you were to purchase one ? Any suggestions anybody ? Thanks
Personally I am a Toyota guy when it comes to a full size half ton.
That's ok, Eric. We still like you.
He's just making Scotty Kilmer happy...lol!
Good one Eric! I love my 06 DURAMAX!
Seems like you are using the Autel more than the other diagnostic tools lately. Can I assume it is your favorite? I matters to me as I am trying to decide which tool to buy
It is. Keith hates it but I like mine :D
Have you thought about getting the Autel J2534? I think you can do the programming directly from the Maxisys. I don't know how yet, or if you need additional software. Or maybe you still need a PC to do the programming. I haven't been able to find much info on it, but I haven't looked very hard.
It is just a J Box from Drew tech. You can use it on a regular PC to be the most stable.
GOD POWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You amaze us! Really,, YOU ROCK!
Hi , please say hi to Mrs. O for me , She is a greate woman .
Shivy salvage yard, sounds like my backyard...lol. It's better now, 3 for 3 are up and running. The down vehicle is More Obsolete Parts and Rust...lol.
That MAF sensor so far far away from the engine intake disturbs me. So many opportunities for vacuum leaks.
Just curious why you didn't clean the external resistor on the MAF?
How do you check what programming has been completed for a specific VIN?
I think I'll start a collection to see if we can buy this man another hat!
Mt man 1949 myself and several viewers have sent him various hats but he is partial to the jeep hat...
I have to be honest... I really like my Jeep hat... it's just me :D
iSUZU sure makes good diesels.
I've got a 2004 silverado 195,000 1 belt 1 alternator 1 hub assembly you can have your ford's etc
nice job. love your videos. keep up the great work.
thank for your efforts to help
Damn wish you would come here and flash my LB7!
The Disgruntled Mechanic : Did you find out anymore information about the Playstore Launch downloads?
yes too long to type the differences between app and buying the whole Launch system. I do know from what I can tell you need to buy the Launch bluetooth dongle to use the app.
The Disgruntled Mechanic : Ok, thanks for your trouble.
When you come up I can do that for you if you remind me. Also is the A/C still cold in your car?
A/C colder then penguin snot! Can't get truck up to you to do it. PCM/ECM big time problems. But thanks for the offer.
The autel seems to be a good tool.i have a verus pro but looking at a second tool as one does different functions than the other do you agree and which model do you use,,,cheers
Mine is the MS908 and it blows the Verus right out of the water IMO
Do you happen to know if the 2003 has the same EGR system as the O4? My local shop cannot seem to get my P1404 code resolved and I would love to point them to this video if it applies. Thanks and great video!!
Great video Mr owe 👍
Awesome content
Great video mr O.
I have the same truck with the same problem but I don't have the diagnostic tools you have where can I have it checked to see if I need the update
I have an 06 Silverado 3/4 ton with the Duramax. It has 551000 miles. Will the MAF cause the engine to go into limp mode while hauling heavy loads?
Is the check engine light on? Kind of a non specific question. Limp mode can be caused from a bunch of issues.
I have been wondering the same thing…
My 07 Duramax only has 195k, but last year it’s been doing same thing,
But only when I have a heavy load & pushing it a little, like traveling 75mph with full horse trailer & start up a hill, it is prawn to jump into limp mode. I had thought it was just low fuel pressure, so I have put an aftermarket fuel pump system…Fass. And it has helped & slightly increased power but eventually got into situation where the limp mode came into affect again,..
I have found now that I can pull over, switch it off for 2-3 mins then crank it up and it’s good to go again,
Prior to learning this I had replaced several factory fuel filters, thinking that was the source of my lack of fuel pressure.
As Donny here says I am a Toyota/Honda guy
South Main Auto Repair well I have a 2017 crv touring model that i use mostly to haul my dog when we go fishing and whatnot. I myself am a honda guy but unfortunately they don't make a truck besides the ridgeline and the bed is not to my liking which is why I'm leaning towards the tundra
Love your show always learn
Temps cool off up in NY Eric it did in Illinois. whats your take on aftermarket air intakes?
Well done.
EGR ... thanks eco-nuts. We welcome your shoving of rules up our business.
Good job
Moral of the story ... clean your MAF sensor and change your air filter.
how much is the update software usaly go for? this would be a handy tool for the shop although we have updated a good chunk of our fleet and still have warranty on most
you can buy them for 3 days 3 months or a year
I have an 05 LLY and mine is showing the same codes, P0404, P0401cranked this morning and ran for 5 seconds and won’t start
Changed the air filter and cleaned MAF and still won’t crank. Changed the MAF and still nothing. Batteries good
Any suggestions?
Love the work you do,,,is that the acutely used there
Hey Eric, Im a fledging DYI want a be. What scan tool do you recommend based upon value and affordability. thanks, Robert
Thanks for the video.
What diagnostic device are you using on this video?
good video! Thanks!
Do you verify with this customer that he doesn't have custom tuning in the Truck before you flash the PCM
Nope. Most people running around here with fart cans and delete's can't afford to have them repaired any how so we don't see them in the shop.
I does replace some of the cal files so you should def. tell the shop you take it to.
