  • In todays video I will fix the stuck quill again. Last time I didn't noticed another problem with the quill. Therefore I have to disassemble the quill again and grind down the shaft on the CNC Machine so it can slide freely in the main pulley.
I hope you liked the video. If that's the case don't forget to like and subscribe :)

clever set up for the grinding. That is the fun part about shop work. Finding solutions with the tools and material you have at hand. Nice video Alex, I really like your channel

Great video Alex. I enjoy watching your adventure in rebuilding this drill press. THanks for taking the time to make this video. I know it takes a lot longer too make a video and do the work.

Great video Alex! Do you think a tail stock would have helped? Or do you think it would have increased the run out?

Alignment would have been very difficult. There are no surfaces to check the correct alignment. The setup was rigid enough to get good results. And that's not a milling spindle or something like that with preloaded bearings. This one just has normal ball bearings in the back. Therefore the 2/100mm runout after grinding was very good :)

I used a very similar method to grind the BT30 taper of my milling spindle. Only difference was, that the grinding bit was mounted horizontally. There I got unter 2μm runout in the spindle taper. So it's definitely possible to get very accurate results!

Clever way to grind a shaft! Was there a lot of wear on the wheel after doing this?

There was a little bit of wear. I think mostly from the keyway "cutting" away the grinding bit. It would have been better to mount a bigger grinding wheel horizontally. Then it would be no problem to grind away a lot of material and the finish would have been better.

Yeah, when it comes to grinding, it's best to have your wheel perpendicular to the feed axis so that the edge of a wheel gets used up first, that way you know when your wheel is 'spent' as your whole wheel is dirty, or 95% of it is. The moment your entire wheel circumference is dirty, you're no longer grinding to the correct distance.

You should check out Keith Fenner's channel he has put up some videos on the topic of heat straightening bent shafting, it's pretty amazing what can be done to true up a shaft.

Thanks for the tip. I have already watched some videos from Keith but haven't seen the ones about the shaft straightening.
