If you want the actual answer, the way lines are delivered are because Shenmue 1 was I think the first fully voice acted game that actually had a ton of lines to record. So they hired bottom of the barrel actors mostly. Since that voice acting, people loved it, memed it, and they kept the same deadpan weird voice acting on purpose for Shenmue 3. But it was also because it was translated lines from Japanese. And English actors most likely had very little coaching for their roles. - But the funnier answer would be "Probably!"
@@scottnukend I knew I couldn't be the only one. I watch the Anime now and Shenmue is uniquely the only property where I love the poor writing and acting. Ryo being an uncharismatic bummer is part of his charm for me and I wouldn't change a thing. It feels like a soap opera in a way due to the dry interactions.

That one has the "Joy", "Ren", and "Wong" branches, but it looks like in this video it has the "Buy Dinner", "Teach Technique", and "Give Present" branches. But no worries if you don't have it. Just curious how Joy would react to Ryo telling her that he'll teach her techniques as thanks lol.
