  • Thought you'd seen every Simpson's cocktail on this channel? Enter the "lawn mower" from Season 10, Homer's masterful concoction of wheatgrass and vodka that rivals only Skittlebraü for genius two ingredient drinks. As you can expect, it's pretty terrible. But can I make a version that's actually good?

      "If it's clear and yella, you've got juice there, fella. If it's tangy and brown, you're in cider town" - this Flanders quote never made sense to me here on the UK, because cider is a hugely popular alcoholic drink that you can get by the pint in a pub, juice is just juice 😁

    There is actually a spirit called Żubrówka ("Zhubrovka"), which is vodka infused with bison grass. It's really popular in Poland.
    You can serve it over vanilla ice cream, or mix it with apple juice to make a "Polish Kiss" (or "tatanka" -- "apple cake"-- as the Poles call it), or mix it with blackcurrant juice to make a "Black Bison".

    Wheatgrass oxidizes with heat and light. It makes it solidly gross. You can juice the fresh Wheatgrass with a mascerating juicer, add fresh lemon to the juice to slow the oxidation, and then mix from there. I make a brunch cocktail that has been lovingly named the "lawn shaving latte" with Uncle Val botanical gin, Wheatgrass and lemon juice, Edinburgh ginger and rhubarb liqueur, and a scant barspoon of carrot eau de vie. Pretty tasty.

    Rather than a nuetral vodka, i would have opted for grey goose.
    Grey Goose specifically has a grass-like taste added to it, but i can understand if this offends vodka purests (it's specifically called for in the drink tho...).
    After that, I'd have gone with Sorghum molasses for my sugar syrup. Sorghum is pretty grass like, but it still has a malty flavor to it.
    Keeping everything green, I'd have probably gone with lime peel and lime juice for the sour part of the drink, and maybe some of that wheat grass juice as a type of bitter.
    Also as a horrible aside, there's a grass jelly drink that might work equally well in this mixer. it's got a mild mint flavor, and is bright green. it's not good though.

    I feel like the OG shot kind of missed the mark. Why not properly dissolve the dried wheatgrass first or, like it probably was “done on the show”, use fresh wheatgrass juice as the base? You already had the wheatgrass so it wasn’t a lack of availability. Not going to say it would be great, but there would be substantial more water and other floral elements in that version so it almost certainly would taste a little better. Just some thoughts!

    @ogreenius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmmm. Hmmm! I love your videos and your channel, and always happy to see your fun TV and movie-themed drinks. But I feel like you under-thought this one.
    I'm sure you know by now that cooking *any* plant ingredient is going to produce a different result from fresh. And often a worse one. You don't want a cooked mint or basil simple syrup, right? Generally the rule is you make the syrup, heat it up, *then* incorporate the herb once it's off the heat, so that the herb is only minimally exposed to heat.
    Here you needed to just use wheat grass *juice*, i.e. juice the wheat grass you had, or if you don't have a juicer (or one that can handle wheat grass), go to one of the many juice bars in SF and get some straight wheat grass juice. This takes care of a couple issues. First, in your initial attempt, wheat grass *powder* obviously lacks the dilution that wheat grass *juice* would bring, so it's not really a fair or accurate test. Second, when you make the syrup, being able to use the actual juice would have changed the flavor considerably (and probably brought more of the wheat grass flavor itself, appropriately).
    All that said I can't imagine this tasting that great in the original approach, with no simple syrup, lemon, or anything. Although maaaaybe it would be kind of like a martini? Maybe experiment with ratios in that case... But your revised approach, with lemon and simple syrup, if used with an actual wheat grass *juice* rather than, er, boiled wheat grass, would probably be a lovely, bright green color, and have more personality from the wheat grass, while still tasting maybe decent. Seems fair to leave out the chile vodka though if you re-test, and see if you can really make it good just as a sour template with no other modifications...

    I feel like gin would work well with the wheatgrass

    Maybe a wheatgrass infused vodka?
