Quite true concerning the lost species. Only under very specific circumstances can well preserved fossils be formed. I would posit that since water born sediments seem to be a part of the sequence that helps to form good fossils, there are probably countless desert species that are totally unrepresented in the record. This might possibly be true with some mountain dwelling fauna as well.

i never see anyone mention it in the comments, but i really appreciate that you put a little CGI tag on the clips/photos that are CGI. I love that, a simple, unobtrusive tag, but it's one of the things that shows that you really respect your audience and don't want them to mistake CGI for the real thing

Oh yeah, I remember these. 7:04 Years ago when I was about 14-15 we saw a bunch of these around certain edges of Folesome Lake in California. We didn't know What the heck they were, it was kinda creepy. They're real stiffly gelatinous blobs growing on rocks that never dry, we didn't know if they were some kind of egg blob or what. My friend found a smaller one that he unceremoniously turned into pieces at an attempt to see if there was anything inside. I told him "That whole blob is most likely some kind of lifeform growing or pulling itself together. Something too small for us to see and it's probably filled with millions of them.... And now they're all over your hands." He got a sick frightened look on his face and jumped back in the water and got back on the boat. He only looked at and lightly poked at them with sticks after that, whereas before he was keen to want to flip them over and just be unpleasant towards them. I always found it odd how some people don't come close to thinking about things like that before they start being destructive. 😄👍
Off topic, but I just realized the answer to a question I've been asked a few times. Why do aliens crash on Earth if they are advanced enough to traverse interstellar space? It's simple, the unknown. When they looked at Earth from their distant home it was a view of our past, like when we detect the presence of planets around a distant star by the dimming of that light we see from that star. We get to determine the chemical composition of that planets' atmosphere, but keep in mind it's the state of that planet long ago. If aliens come from the Proxima Centauri system they viewed our planet as it was 4 years ago until they made the journey and arrived. If it's a visit from another galaxy then the chemical composition of our atmosphere they detected was likely from millions of years ago, if they could determine anything at all from those distances. In short, maybe the first few aliens crashed because they arrived to an atmosphere they weren't expecting.
I really wish sometimes measurements were given in Miles and Kilometers. I can envision Meters pretty well, but I don't have a great concept of Kilometers since I live in America. Actually, can someone just tell me how many Kilometers is in a Mile? Please. 😅👍

The crazy thing is how much of the life wasn't fossilized, there's millions of species we'll likely never know about including large dinosaurs.
