I remember watching this 12 years ago 😂 now in 21 🤔 so I was like 9 years old, I watched it a lot bc it looks delicious but I can’t make it since I was a kid and now I’ve come back but to learn how to make this and actually make it 😭
My daddy is Korean and he made this and basically ALL of your other recipes and they are delicious thanks for inspiration so my dad loves to cook now he is like a pro at cooking like you Maangchi +Maangchi
yes you can make your own mugwort powder. Actually it won't be powdered but it looks like green cotton. Blanch them and squeeze out the water. Dry them and grind. I made it this spring and it turned out it looks like exactly the mugwort powder sold at Korean grocery stores. I keep it in the freezer. I used my coffee grinder.
Ohh my gosh this cake is so beautiful. I looked up this recipe because I watched a Korean movie and the girl made a rainbow rice cake. This looks too pretty to cut. I’m sure it tastes so delicious! Thank you for sharing your recipe with us.
Thank you for the recipe. I'm from indonesia. In my country they call 'kue putu' steam in the bamboo. In the middle we add palm sugar and when it's ready we springkle with coconuts. It's very delicious.
What a wonderful video! I could hardly wait to find out how it was going to turn out. I am amazed at this because I'm used to making cakes with wheat flour, eggs and baking soda/powder. I've also never used steaming to make a cake before either. So interesting!
Oh my Goodness this is just too pretty to cut! I was so relaxed and it was soothing to me to watch the process of making this beautiful cake. I know it’s a lot of hard work and the end result is gorgeous. But it was just so nice with the music and the gentleness in which you made this rainbow rice cake. It was already so pretty and then the surprise of adding the dried fruit for decoration into pretty flowers…WOW. So nice how you wrapped it for a gift. It looks so delicious. Thank you for the recipe. I am watching h a Kotean drama where the lady makes good food and she made this so I wanted to see how it is done. A lot of work but well worth it 🤍🩷💛💚🤎
Those cakes are very special and very difficult and time consuming to make. I like the way Maangchi demonstrates it it makes me think like I might be able to do it too.
I love how you are making extra effort to entertain your viewers... the appropriate music and your outfits sometimes matching your recipes too. :) I will make this for my daughter ‘s next birthday. Thanks always.
Someone else let me know she made this rice cake with Thai dried rice flour and failed. Soak short grain rice overnight and grind it finely if you have a good quality grinder. It's very convenient that Korean grocery here sells the package of rice flour which is pre-soaked and ground.
TH-cam recommended this video to me randomly.. And this reminds me of a popular breakfast dish from the state of Kerala, in India. The dish is called puttu and can be eaten sweet or savory depending on the accompaniments.. So interesting how some dishes are so similar..
Looks like you need a lot of patience to do this. But it looks very pretty, though. Never heard of a STEAMED cake with RICEFLOUR. Hmmm...too bad I don't have a steamer - or the space to put one up.
Asians, at least Koreans historically have never cooked with oven unlike the westerners. so all the baking stuffs were done either with steam pots like this or roasting on fire.
Both my 4 year old son and I are American Korean-American and enjoy watching and learning your food and techniques! I have a hard time getting my Korean mother-in-law to teach me her recipes and technique so, this will absolutely floor her when I come bearing food at her doorstep! Thank you!
Maangchi In my place we called "putu" with bamboo as tray. But it's inspiring so. I think i have to make this rainbow-ricecake for ied later... yum..yum... thank u Maangchi ...
Maangchi, I imagine that if my Korean mother-in-law were alive, she would teach me to cook Korean dishes. I love watching your show. It adds beautiful Korean cuisine into my life! :)
We make steamed rice cakes in my place too, except we used toasted black sesame seeds between thin layers of rice flour, which creates the black and white striped pattern 😊 It's really good, but kinda tricky to make.
Absolutely love love love this recipe. It's so pretty. i'm so happy you post all these cooking vids. Must take a lot of time on your part too. I'm so grateful.
Hi maangchi, really liked u r way of cooking. Especially vegetarian. Great going. Can u upload few more vegetarian deserts? Something different made out of rice cake, roll cakes for kids, something for kids plz. Thank u
I bought Korean rice cake in the Korean store in Australia, it is very tasty and I love it, but I didn't find it in Hong Kong Korean store, I watched your video, I can make it at home. Thank you very much.
Thank you Maangchi,I adore this recipe. I ended up making this for my daughter's first birthday. Both her and her father are big rice eaters so this was a big hit.
Wow! What a great tutorial. It was so informative. I loved seeing this cultural clip. The cake was stunning and the meaning for giving this particular cake a lovely thought.
I never heard about this cake. So, i will take a the grossery store look, if i find the rice flour, this is not commom in my country. Brazil. I loved this colored cake, perfect job. Congratulations.
Serve warm because rice cake gets hard when chilled. Freeze any leftover rice cake: if you freeze it when it’s still fresh and fluffy, it will still be chewy and fluffy when it’s thawed out. Cut the rice cake into individual servings and wrap each piece in plastic wrap. Put the pieces into a plastic bag and keep that in the freezer. Thaw it out at room temperature before serving, or reheat it in a steamer or microwave oven.
In indonesia this similar like kue putu bamboo / putu cake bamboo , they using pandan leave for green colour and flavor. And...and... in the middle cake is red sugar melted ! Yumm~
Hi Maangchi! Thank you for the recipe! I have made this a couple times and had some questions for you. How long do you thaw the frozen rice flour? Does it need to be completely thawed? I tried sifting the frozen rice flour after thawing for about 20 minutes or so and it was impossible to sift (it started caking and was sticky)...that rice cake didn't work out however, I made it again and let it thaw for about an hour and it worked out a little better. When I roll the flour between my hands like you do in the video, mine turned out like balls of dough as opposed to falling apart like your video. Did I use the wrong flour? I'm not supposed to use the sweet rice flour correct? I felt that I needed another sifter because the rice cake still stuck to the sifter and I had to wash and dry before I could work on the next layer. Help please! Thank you!
Yes, it should be completely thawed in the refrigerator. I usually put the bag of frozen rice flour in the fridge overnight. Mesh strainers can have large or small holes. Use the one with large holes so that the rice flour can go through the strainer easily. Check out the written recipe. Check out the recipe on my website, please. It has all the information you need. I always put the link to recipe in the description box of my videos.
im back omggg, ive been always loving this video. remember watching it back when i was 5 years old, the whole vid is so satisfying. thankyou for being in my childhood'
I filled the water in the steamer but it all evaporated while it was boiling! I tried with another steamer and same thing happened :( it scorched the first steamer, any advice??
Thank you for this recipe, I had mujigae ddeok every year for my birthday (and a few times in between ^^) and I still remember my mother's friend making it specially for me (she owned a ddeok shop). Thank you so much!!!!
That was apsolutly beautiful!!!!!You have so much patience. You make me laugh every time I watch you.I am sick and can,t cook any more, but watching you make my day. The closest I ever got to making Korean food was ordering off the menu..Keep it up sweety and have a blessed day!!!!!!!
What is the difference between the frozen rice flour and regular rice flour? Also, can I use regular rice flour? I live in a small town in Mexico and we don't have Korean markets here
Sunggyu Is My Type regular rice flour sold here is not made out of the right type of rice for this recipe. If you can get sushi rice, which is sold at most regular supermarkets, you can make the right type of flour with it, following Maangchi's instructions (she has the recipe for this special rice flour in her website).
+Joyce Kun No, if you have some leftover rice cake, freeze it when it's still fresh and chewy. You can freeze up to 1 month. Thaw it out at room temperature and serve. The rice cake will turn fluffy again. If you keep any type of rice cakes in the fridge, it will get hard soon. Serve hot or room temperature.
Healthy alternative for a Birthday cake. Beautiful, lightly sweet and the fluffyness. You have delighted the 3 senses with this Rainbow cake. I will try this one. Thanks for sharing !
it seems like 'Putu' in Indonesia, but we tend to use pandan to color the cake. So 'Putu' regularly has green color. Thank you for your recipe. Love it.
Thank you! Your mother will be very impressed if you make it for her! However,I can't guarantee regular dried rice works. To make this rice cake, you will have to soak short grain rice overnight , drain water, and grind it finely. I found a Korean grocery store sells this pre-soaked and ground rice flour which is very convenient. It's wet, so it has to be kept in the freezer. Otherwise it will go bad easily.
OMG this is so cool! This summer I'm most likely going to make this with my friends. See, one of my friends is allergic to wheat and milk, so she can't eat many cakes, but this looks perfect! Great job!
i very very very enjoyed this video it seems so professional, and, also because of the music, i can feel a traditional corean atmosphere... and how carefully are you doing the individual layers... this video is such such a pleasure, visually, also for the ears with that background. and, i'm sure, it's tasty!!!
@Appiebunny sorry to hear that. Keep working hard for better result. This rice cake is a little difficult. "it wouldn't go through the sifter.." add less water then. Practice makes perfect.
my boyfriend is korean and his mum made this for his big sisters engagement party! and now i really want to try it myself!! so yeah going to search the asia stores in my town for the flour... hope i find one that has it cause i havent seen a pure korean grocery store in my town... hope my cake will turn out as pretty as yours! thanks for posting these videos maangchi! Greetings from germany!
You are so cute! I've been watching your videos and can't wait to try the recipes out myself. I especially love your sweets, as I'm a baker and love learning about desserts from other cultures. Please keep posting more videos!
no, you need short grain rice flour. One of my readers shared how to make "how to make rainbow rice cake with dry rice flour" on the forum on my website. Visit my website and you will see search box, type out "how to make rainbow rice cake with dry rice flour", then it will lead the thread.

Just watched this 11 year old video. You have not changed at all. So cute. Love your videos.
My daddy is Korean and he made this and basically ALL of your other recipes and they are delicious thanks for inspiration so my dad loves to cook now he is like a pro at cooking like you Maangchi +Maangchi

Nayoung Jang bygones-

Yg lewat nya malem2, temen nya kue klepon😁
In Southern India and Sri Lanka, we make similar item called "Puttu" - pretty much steamed rice flour with coconut
Sometimes I watch Maangchi videos and decide I’m so happy to pay Korean ladies to make it
I'm proud of myself for even thinking about making it. phew
11 years of mummy......hard work and streadiness....U r looking like child in this Video...love u maa from India
What a wonderful video! I could hardly wait to find out how it was going to turn out.

That is the most beautiful cake, pastry or sweet I have ever seen! Nicely layered, pretty colors without looking overworked. Magnificent!
I really enjoying your show.. and this time I love the authentic hegumu music also thank you . Also I liked your visit to Korean village also
Beautiful cake, and what pretty colors, I'll bet it tastes as good as it looks, have the best day.
Hi Maangchi, the layers of this rice cake reminds me of a similar rice cake back home in the Philippines called "Sapin Sapin".
What a beautiful little cake! Definitely a great idea for a special gift to give someone you care about.
The ingredients are simple ! I love thiss. I will probably make this for my friends. Thank you, you are awesome ! Jjang!
tyra .l You are jjang! : )
My family ordered one of these for my 100-day party when I was a baby. It looks so good! Now I know how to make it for my mom and dad!
Someone else let me know she made this rice cake with Thai dried rice flour and failed.
Soak short grain rice overnight and grind it finely if you have a good quality grinder.
It's very convenient that Korean grocery here sells the package of rice flour which is pre-soaked and ground.
I need a sifter. I want to make this for my birthday next year. I’ll have my daughter and my grandgirls watch this, so we can all make it.
I really enjoy your sunny personality. Keep posting videos!! ♡
TH-cam recommended this video to me randomly.. And this reminds me of a popular breakfast dish from the state of Kerala, in India. The dish is called puttu and can be eaten sweet or savory depending on the accompaniments.. So interesting how some dishes are so similar..

so much effort, no wonder she treasures everything she makes :)

So beautiful wonderful work of art,

Absolutely love love love this recipe. It's so pretty. i'm so happy you post all these cooking vids. Must take a lot of time on your part too. I'm so grateful.
no, this rice cake is supposed to be fluffy not chewy like other rice cakes. I guess that is why we take so much time to sift it :)
You are a very talented woman, I really like your cooking skills. I love your food.
Hi maangchi, really liked u r way of cooking. Especially vegetarian. Great going. Can u upload few more vegetarian deserts? Something different made out of rice cake, roll cakes for kids, something for kids plz. Thank u

frozen rice flower is already "soaked and ground" like maangchi said. I do not think it will be okay to use that.
Thank you Maangchi,I adore this recipe. I ended up making this for my daughter's first birthday. Both her and her father are big rice eaters so this was a big hit.
10년전 영상이라 그런지 화질이 360이 최대에요 신기해요ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ그래도 영상이 도움이 많이 되었습니다 고맙습니다;)

jtv612x add more water when you feel like it's running out, or maybe you didn't cover the pot properly?

I am making it white
I am craving this cake. Time to make it again. This reminds me of steam rice cake which the rest of my family prefers. I actually like this better.
Does the cake need to be put in fridge when it is eaten on the next day after cooking? Is the cake served cold or hot?
+Joyce Kun No, if you have some leftover rice cake, freeze it when it's still fresh and chewy. You can freeze up to 1 month. Thaw it out at room temperature and serve. +Maangchi thank you. i will try to make it if i can find frozen rice flour here in Hong Kong.
I doubt I'd ever make this, but I appreciate the fact that each layer was not only colored, but was flavored accordingly.
@KoisuruMarionnette wow, she will be very impressed by your rice cake.
My mother is Korean and she loves your videos. Thanks for posting them! :)
Oo, it looks so delicious. You are truly the empress of cuisine.

Maanchi you're awesome and your videos rock! thanks for posting and keep up the good work because I know I will. 간사합니다
The cake is not difficult at all, but it is time consuming but so worth it. Thank you for sharing your culture.
Wow... I really took these food for granted when I was living in Korea. How easy it was to get them from a market!!!
@strengthofwill haha, that's a funny story! The sifter is sold at a baking supply store or any Kitchen stuff store.
i love her hairstyle and outfit ..😍😍😍
@Appiebunny sorry to hear that. Keep working hard for better result. This rice cake is a little difficult. "it wouldn't go through the sifter.." add less water then. Practice makes perfect.
my boyfriend is korean and his mum made this for his big sisters engagement party!

I'm learning what kitchen supplies I need from watching these videos. I'm missing a lot...
Hi Maangchi! We Filipinos have sweet ricecakes too! we usually add coconut cream to the mixture and it's so yummy. :)
