    In the poem Odysseus actually warned all the women in the house to stay in their rooms during the battle, so they don't have to witness the slaughter and don't get into the crossfire. Also he bathed himself and ordered the servants to clean the house, before going to Penelope, because there was blood everywhere.

    Maybe my last round of fun facts. Strap in:
    *The Challenge* - Penelope has been weaving that shroud for years. Finally, she’s decided to give them a challenge, knowing they can’t accomplish it. There are different versions of how the bow is made/enchanted, but the gist is that only Odysseus can string it. Her line “I’d rather die than grow old without the best of you”, at first, sounds like it might mean she’d rather die than marry someone who can’t match her husband, but no. She’s saying, “Only my husband can do this. I’d rather die than marry one of you.” Spartan badass is a badass.
    And hearing _them_ sing Penelope, when we’d previously only heard Odysseus sing her name in love and longing for her. (Minus Zeus’ choir from the beginning). It really pulls at the heartstrings, but also does a good job indicating how much pressure they are putting on her to choose.
    Hold Them Down - in Ancient Greece, not having a body to bury is one of the worst things you could do. Having no body to find, meant Telemachus wouldn’t be able to pass into the afterlife. They wanted to ensure he would _never_ be able to rest, even in death.
    While Antinous is singing about what he’ll do to Penelope, you can hear her instrument screaming in the background.
    *Odysseus* - “Polyphemus”, “Scylla”, “Charybdis”, all the monsters he faced. The king came home and slaughtered just as they had. There are several references in the song. They’re chanting his name in the background in the same way Polyphemus’ name had been chanted, but it’s also a throwback to the souls’ chants in No Longer You. We also finally get Tiresias’ final prophecy- “kill all the suitors for love). Other references, we obviously have Scylla for the torches. The “No” after that suitor asked for mercy is a reference to Odysseus asking Poseidon for mercy during Get in the Water, and he also replied with a cold “No”.
    When Telemachus first arrives we can hear a Quick Thought, our first hint that Athena is still alive. Each of his blade strikes/blocks beat to motifs- Little Wolf, Legendary, Warrior of the mind, then Odysseus’ theme.
    *I Can’t Help but Wonder* - “if I have your strength in me.” “The strength you hold within.” Odysseus told Telemachus he doesn’t need _his strength,_ because Telemachus has become a strong young man during his absence. “Capture wind and sky for you”, in a way he did with Aeolus and the storm. Odysseus sensing Athena was there showed just how close they had been. He knew she was watching without even seeing her. In the end, though, different tunes play as they part to show their mindset. Athena has Warrior of the Mind, and Odysseus has Penelope’s theme.
    Would You Fall in Love with Me Again - he said “waiting for love”, not “waiting for me”. Odysseus knew there was a chance she wouldn’t accept him after everything. You can hear Poseidon’s trumpets/theme of “Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves” in the background when he says “left a trail of red on every island”. At trader friends like objects I could use”, we hear Zeus’ theme.
    The olive bed is the heart of the house. Odysseus met Penelope there, then built his entire palace around what he made for her. When she asked him to move it not only was it a test to see if he _knew that,_ but also if he was willing to literally uproot the start of their journey. The monster rises, his rage bubbling when she asked, but Penelope didn’t recoil. Our legend not only accepted him, but she _met him_ on the monster’s level. Odysseus was her husband, and he returned. Odysseus’ first words in the series are battle commands. His final are telling Penelope how much he loves her.
    WYFILWMA has _beautiful_ livestream animation, Hold Them Down has a great end scene, and ‘Odysseus’ is insane, as well. The Challenge is really the only one that doesn’t have an animatic, just one beautiful drawing of Penelope looking longingly at the viewer. I can’t recommend and praise the livestream versions of each song more.

      The first and final lines of Epic are kinda symbolic in a way: "Alright my brothers listen closely... I love you." It's obvious that Odysseus cared for and loved his crew and is haunted by their deaths throughout the musical, so those lines reinforce that idea.

    Hear me out, the open arms philosophy wasn't lost in Monster, and it wasn't lost in Scylla or Thunderbringer. After everything Ody went through, when he finally faced Poseidon again, he still tried to use open arms to appeal to Poseidon during Get in the Water. But when he's drowning and saw Polites one last time, and he sings "you can relax my friend" instead, this is where Open Arms dies, and Ody has truly become the monster.

    • @liamwhite3522
      @liamwhite3522 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +34

      It's also where Ody dies.
      "I see you on the brink of death, I see you draw your final breath, I see a man who gets to make it home alive"
      He dies, and the monster lives. From 600 Strike onward, he even has the chorus that supernatural elements in the musical can call upon.

      I also think that the moment in the water is when he gets a new patron god. Cuz he and Athena broke up, but he needed another god's help. So I think Ares, the more ruthless and bloody minded god of war took Ody under his wing because he wanted to see/be part of the suitor massacre.
      So not only his minset, but his faith changed.

    37:38 in the Odyssey, Odysseus and his men fight a battle and raid a village after leaving Troy where Odysseus spares a priest of Apollo and his family and the priest thanks him with divine wine. I didn't see anyone comment this but in the original Odyssey Ody was buck naked slaughtering the suitors. Imagine this terrifying demon of a man with his jibbly bits out slaughtering everyone. Horrifying. I really liked how Telemachus is the one who left the weapons door unlocked, I can only imagine Ody hearing the suitors and just going "shit shit shit", the first time he's ever had to clean up after his kid.
    In the original Odyssey Athena convinces the gods to hold off the dawn so Ody & Penelope can have a longer time reuniting, Penelope also does the bed test to make sure it wasn't Zeus in disguise because he do like to be dressing himself up and sleeping with people's wives.
    If you haven't I highly highly recommend watching the live stream, it had such funny moments with all the cast and crew. You also get to watch their first time reactions to the Ithica saga (disgust and tears) which is priceless.

    I haven't seen anyone say this yet, so, I might as well say it
    Odysseus' bow was a "palintonos bow", which means "bent or stretched backwards". Alot of strength has to be put into it to bend the bow to the correct shape when strung, since it's usual shape is more of a "C" when unstrung, instead of just being completely straight when unstrung like normal longbows

    • @Blitzwaffen
      @Blitzwaffen 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      The exact amount varies as well but the version I read mentioned the draw was roughly 300 lbs. I'm sure it was exaggerated but the point was it was a type of bow that only a warrior would know how to string and fire, whereas all the suitors were not warriors in any stretch of the word.

    • @liamwhite3522
      @liamwhite3522 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

      Correct, if the storm wasn't bagged, then Ody could not make it home even following all the rest of the instructions. As for why it has to be given to Ody to hold onto, it has to be a test, a game. The gods don't ever just solve things for heroes. They wouldn't hold onto the bag for him, and any mortal who found the bag would have their first instinct to check inside, except for the one mortal who knows what is inside, and has every reason to never open it: Odysseus.

  • @MesoJoe
    @MesoJoe 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +45

    in terms of the bow being "impossible", it's two things; one it's been made by heracles as a tutoring bow and so requires at least some degree of demigod strength. Two, it's a palintonos, or old greecian recurve bow (a bow that curves forward of the bowman's grip at rest and needs to be pulled back when strung), and those were rare back then. Recurves require technique to successfully string it, on top of strength. Fitting for a greecian hero of wit and his witty wife's challenge

    From the beginning, we saw both Odysseus and Athena clearly; despite being similarly intelligent and strategic, their core drives are very different. Odysseus, at first, wanted a friend and then his goal is his family. Athena wanted to change the world, in her mind it required a Warrior of the Mind unlike any other.
    Odysseus never cared about changing the world, and Athena didn't understand Odysseus wanting to show mercy or empathy at first. Now, years later...they're still who they are at their core: Odysseus only cares about his family, Athena still wants to change the world, they're just older and wiser now. And they understand each other at last which is why he says she can make her vision of the world come true, and she smiles and bids him farewell with the "My Goodbye" tune at the end of that song so he can go see his wife because she knows that's all he wants.

    2:31:55 the sun god in the Odyssey is Helios, the reason Zeus comes down to deal with odyseus instead of helios is because Helios is constantly moving the sun through the sky and Zeus is also the god of justice in greek mythology so when Helios threatens to put the sun in the underworld and never let the living see it again, Zeus goes down and punishes Odysseus in his stead

  • @colt1903

    To my knowledge, most interpretations of Antinous put him somewhere within 5 to 10 years older than Telemachus, cuz in the OG Odyssey he was able to remember seeing Ody go off to war. So he'd need to be old enough to form and retain such a memory.

    • @ApartDragonFruit
      @ApartDragonFruit 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Odysseus also remembers holding Antinous as an infant too (because he saves his dad from getting killed) so he can't have been that much older than Telemachus. Most of the suitors are young, and are from Ithaca or surrounding areas (some are even kids of Odysseus' men) and idk why so many people think that they are all old.

    • @colt1903
      @colt1903 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @ApartDragonFruit Because most people would expect the Suitors to be close to the same age as her and Ody since that's the typical relationship philosophy. You don't expect a woman in... What, her mid 40s to lose her husband and then marry a 20 year old, do you? So most people just assume they're around her age instead of remembering that this is a story written over a thousand years ago.

    9:38 Narrator voice: *it was indeed, four hours*
    2:57:55 To answer your question, Athena's philosophy is being smart about things, especially conflict. It's either you avoid the fight or you win it completely. Ody failed because a) he didn't finish an enemy that would very much go after him and his men if given the opportunity and b) after escaping his foe, he gave his name when he could've left quietly and the ciclop would've never figured it out his identity. He failed her test and defied her only to do things halfheartedly leading to problems down the line. That's not being smart, and Athena hated seeing him shoot himself in the foot when she knows how capable he is, but he was struck with grief and made an irrational choice that fucked him over. She says "One day you'll understand [her teachings/philosophy]" and he does by the end of the saga, but he had to suffer to do so.
    3:33:18 I fucking CACKLED 😂
    There's a good animation where Ody uses the wind to cause some sort of tornado to throws rocks at Poseidon, that's my favorite depiction of the fight

      @liamwhite3522 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Your second point is mine exactly! Especially with monsters, which have dubiously defined durability and mortality, *not* killing the cyclops is a recipe for disaster. As she says, "He's still a threat until he's dead!" But also, Athena is about structured combat and strategy, whereas Ares is about violent combat and carnage. Crippling a foe like Ody did to Polyphemus and then not putting him out of his misery is cruelty and half-assed cruelty at that, which is not Athena's path at all.

    Worlds best tasting wine: in the original Odyssey Odysseus gets the cyclopse drunk off his ass with unmixed (basically really strong) wine (no lotuses involved).
    He spins this whole story about how this is the rarest bestest wine in the world that was personally given to him by a priest at a famous shrine, and the wine is so exclusive that even the regular servants at this shrine didn't know it existed.
    Original Odysseus is kind of a pathological lair tbh.

    • @anthonymarchetta8796

      For the record I think the evidence that Odysseus is stretching the truth here is pretty strong. For one thing, why is he the one who objects to stealing the cyclops' things when he had no issue sacking the island of the Cicones earlier? In the story of Circe, why does he stay with Circe for an entire extra year until his men beg him to ask Circe to leave?
      I suspect the truth is that they really were trying to steal from the cyclops and he got caught. But in the version of the story he cooked up later, it was his men who wanted to steal but poor little Odysseus, such a good and noble person, opposed the idea when the evil cyclops attacked him.

    3:48:06 - I think others have noted it, but Odysseus used a type of bow that was very rare to Greece and so many were unfamiliar with it. His bow was recurved the other direction, and so while it was resting unstrung, it was curved still instead of straighter like many bows of the day. So it was both knowledge only Odysseus would have, and it was also incredibly hard to string anyway to fight against the bow's natural curve

A lot from the Wisdom Saga are canon bits, including the lightning strike, him on the cliff and a lot of God Games. The canon for Little Wolf is in a video game style, though.

    Best yet, Ody killing all the suitor is not only justified, but ENCOURAGED by Zeus. The Suitors effectively have been bumming around his castle while he was away for years, and have basically been abusing the Laws of Hospitality to do whatever they want, but by planning ill will against their hosts effectively brought divine retribution upon themselves, in the form of Odysseus. God sanctioned murder spree with no repercussions are rare in Greek myth due to how sacred treating one's guests is supposed to be but the story is effectively a good reason why Guests should be kind to their hosts as well, parable style.

    A note regarding love in the Greek world! You said Athena loved Odysseus, and she absolutely did! You also said "not love, love", which is where Greek ideals of love become very awesome. The Greeks of yesteryear (and even to a certain extent of current times) had multiple words for love that spanned love for family, love for your children, love for friends, love for comrades in war, love for strangers, and romantic love, just to name a few. She likely had a combination of philia - a platonic form of love for family/close friends - and pragma - a form of love between those with shared values and senses of duty!

    Fun Fact about Penelope's challenge to the suitors! First, in the song The Challenge, she's talking about the storm that Ody unleashed while fighting Poseidon, so this is in the present time. Secondly, Odysseus was said to wield a palintonos bow, which is as very steep type of recurve bow where the arms of the bow curve away from the archer when it's unstrung. Recurve bows can be notoriously hard to string due to the curve being in the opposite direction of the stringing, and this recurve is what makes bows like this very powerful. Odysseus' specific bow was said to be so powerful only he had the strength to curve it backward and string it, much less draw it fully and fire it. So yes, the challenge is meant to be unwinnable by anyone but Ody!

    So something about the song mutiny. You were talking about who is the god of the sun and about the king gods. In the Odyssey, Helios is the sun god. Helios is actually a Titan, which predates the Olympians (the Olympians are the gods that people are usually thinking of when they think of the Greek pantheon). Some people get confused why Apollo took Odysseus’s side in God games because Apollo is often depicted as the sun god, Apollo is not the sun god in the Odyssey. Additionally, you were talking about how a god of time would be a very good God king. When the Titans were the ones in power, ruling everything, their king was actually Kronos, the Titan of time. So you were extremely accurate with that(he was also the father of the first generation of Olympians, including Zeus). I just thought that was really cool because you kind of predicted that a little bit even without the knowledge behind it

    1:36:30 The staff's name is the Caduceus.
    Fun fact about it! So Heremes is the god of travel, shepherds, and a bunch of other stuff (I'm not gonna get into it all), the staff itself is most often said to be a gift from Apollo (though there are a few versions that claim its from other people). A lot of American health associations use this staff as their symbol, but its really a misuse that's become so common people don't realize it.
    The staff medical associations should use (and many do, such as the World Health Organization) is the Staff/rod of Asclepius. He was the son of Apollo (the connection to Apollo is probably one of the reasons for the mix up) and the god of healing/health/medecine (Apollo also was know for his powers of healing). Importantly this staff has a single snake instead of the two on Caduceus, and perhaps even more notably, does not have wings on it (wings are very much a Hermes thing with his role of being a messenger and travel).
    Once you know this its kind of really funny whenever you come across the wrong one cause it has literally no symbolic association with healing, yet it gets used as such.

  • @Xanatrix

    Fun fact about Ody's reunions with his son and Athena! First, yes, Athena is alive; as Calypso properly pointed out in "Love in Paradise," goddesses can't die. Remember that all of Zeus' siblings were eaten by Titan Kronos to prevent them from deposing him like how Kronos castrated and overthrew his own father, Ouranos, but that Zeus retrieved them from Kronos' stomach before casting Kronos into Tartarus; many of them were hurt and mangled, but couldn't die and recovered from their wounds because they're divinities. Secondly, something fun pointed out by Jorge in a later short; after Athena says "Very well" two bits of overlapping music showing Ody's and Athena's two different paths play; Warrior of the Mind/This is my Goodbye in Athena's piano, and "Penelope" played in Ody's softer nylon guitar.

    1:12:30 lol I keep commenting every five minutes but actually some people think that Aeolus’s warning was a lot more literal! It can be said that the reason the crew was so curious about the bag in the first place was because Ody was so paranoid about it. He was honest at first sure but then he stayed awake for 9 days to guard it without trusting any of his own men. To them it really must have felt like there was something going on and they needed to check it out. So the whole “keep your friends closer” was a real, literal warning that he should have either straight up lied or snuck around about it or he should have trusted them more, and the reason he failed was because he kept his friends at arms length.

  • @Xanatrix
    @Xanatrix 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Side note regarding Ody's faithfulness in Epic: Jorge took a lot of liberties with the Odyssey. In the original Odyssey, Odysseus lived with Circe for a year and convinced her to release his men, but they absolutely did the dirty and had kids. He also jumped into bed with Calypso in the original Odyssey.
    There are other liberties that Jorge took that make for a wonderful story; in the original Odyssey, the sirens died simply because Odysseus heard their calls and survived since his men's ears were stuffed with beeswax and he was tied to the mast. I think the ruthless slaughter in Different Beast is a lot more poignant for the storytelling purposes it has.

    I'm sure someone has said, but different versions of the story give different reasons for why the suitors can't complete the challenge. I am goin off the top of my head, so don't quote me, but some of the reasons being in some it was a gift from the gods, in some I think he was just that strong, others there was a technique to stringing the boy they just didn't know, I think I also saw somewhere because he was shorter the bow type may have been non-standard (leading to a technique/skill issue for the suitors, lol).
