- Do you remember the show "The Joy of Painting" on PBS? If you do, you certainly will remember its host and creator, Bob Ross. His easy smile and affable demeanor made it seem that painting was a joy all of us should partake in. The instructional television program ran from 1983 to 1994 and made Ross a popular television personality not only in America, but also in Latin America, Europe, and Canada. Ross sadly died due to complications from lymphoma on July, 4th 1995. In honor of Bob Ross, we’ve created a video about the untold truth of this popular tv host. That’s exactly what he is supposed to do. And if he can do it better, then he improved the technique which he can teach to other people, who then can improve the technique again.
imagine a math teacher from high school looking at one of their students who became an engineer and go: "he copied me and he thinks he can do it better."

I think he also means the whole concept of the tv show. I guess in this case you could say copying is a bad thing. also I checked on william alexanders paintings.. Bob ross wasnt better.

So some people here seem to think that in order to teach what you’ve learned you need to expand on it. So my elementary school teacher who taught me the alphabet she learned when she was young, was actually supposed to add a few letters of her own onto it then?? You guys are adding your own personal thoughts of what a student should or shouldn’t do. Ultimately a student does whatever the hell they want. The teacher on the other hand, once they have passed on what they learned must accept that the student can do whatever they want to do with that skill. Build on it, or teach it how they learned it. It’s completely up to them and all your moaning about how that’s not fair says volumes about how warped your sense of fair is. Comment by: MattyYoungcloudsArt

this is so sweet. ❤ he has been called the Godfather of ASMR by the ASMR community because many of us realized that he gave us tingles when we where kids. I loved him growing up for that. ❤

I wouldn’t say I hated him. But I can’t stand the sound of his voice, the things he says or watching him demo painting. And I don’t think he does anyone any favors teaching “students” how to paint like him … not encouraging their own observation and exploration.

My husband was in so much pain in his back. He was on the floor with his knees in the couch. I wanted to call an ambulance he was so bad. I turned on tv and there was Bob Ross. He loved him. By the time the show was over, he was up, walking around, and went to the garage and worked on his car. So his voice does do wonders.

Idontknow WhoIam . There was a lot more to it than that . His teacher thought that he was mimicking him too closely . Happy little trees and clouds etc plus a host of other Bob Ross sayings all originally came from his teacher . I suppose his teacher Bill Alexander thought it was one thing for his pupil to copy his paintings so closely but to copy his exact style of teaching and to copy his expressions and sayings , the way he talked even was taking it too far and maybe a bit disrespectful . Then there was the fact that Bob slapped his name all over products that Bill had invented and brought into current use so he could make money out of someone else’s idea . I think that was obviously a cause of friction between them . I love them both however. They were both amazing . It’s a shame that they fell out and didn’t resolve their differences . I’m sure that there was two sides to their particular falling out . They both seemed such genuine and lovely people . Hopefully they have made up now .
That student then decides to become a teacher and the cycle repeats.

fun fact: my family was friends with bob ross. he was extremely good friends with my grandfather, and they went to the military and art class together. he made a painting and instead of giving it to the people gave it to my grandfather with a special message. i have photos of him with my family. i only remember the family dinner one though. hope this was an interesting fact! :)

When I first saw Bob's programme 30 years ago I had always wanted to paint but didn't know how. After watching him at work he convinced me that I could do what he was doing, so I had a go. 30 years later I am still painting and it has become something that has been one of the mainstays of my life and I shall be ever grateful to Bob for teaching me what really is, THE JOY OF PAINTING.
Thank you Bob for giving my life a purpose.

That's exactly what he wanted. He didn't do what he did to show off or be famous or rich. He did it because he wanted others to know that anyone can paint, and he wanted people to see the joy in it and be happy. One time after a colorblind person said he was unable to paint because he was colorblind, he made a painting all in gray to show he can still paint.

Rizkirafu I agree, imo Alexander is just butthurt and salty af maybe because Ross got his TV gig after him and was able to achieve many of the things he wasn't able to achieve himself. So many of us got to know Ross through his program and millions of others would recognize him because of his afro but this is the first time I learned about Alexander.

If a person can start out as a screaming master sergeant and evolve into a soft spoken painter, that person is capable of making a decision to change to make himself happier and following through with it. The most difficult thing a person can do is change their behavior. Something to be admired, not ridiculed.
I watched his show growing up,the best thing on at the time. Now I recently have been listening to him just to fall back to sleep .then to re-watch to see his happy accomplishments.

I think Bob's teacher needs pitying, he's a real sad sack. Also I detect, like others a great deal of jealously at Bob's success. You'd think he'd be proud to say " I trained. Bob" but no, he says Bob copies me. He doesn't stop to think his talent is being carried forward and improved on.

His voice was so comforting as his paintings. It's so embarrassing to admit his voice was sometimes too soothing, that I actually have fallen asleep on the best painting part. He was such a gentle hearted Artist who taught a lot in so many home from PBS. Thank you, Mr. Ross, R.I.P. ♥️

Thanks, that's really nice! Didn't know much about Bob and was worried that this would be some sort of hatchet-job but no, he was just a really nice guy! The Joy Of Painting has been running on BBC4 here in the UK since the beginning of the lockdown last March, and I genuinely think it had played its little part in helping people through it, it did me anyway.
The fact that he died of lymphoma (a type of lung cancer) is putting me in tears. He did not deserve such a painful end, however I am still happy that his legacy lives on and that when he was still here, he was the best person he could be (Sorr if I type incorrectly, I'm too lazy to wipe away the tears that are making my vision blurry)
As a kid, I used to pester my mom to put on "the big hair man" and then took to calling him "Uncle Bob" by the time I was 6. Comic books, and Bob Ross are why I started art, and I feel privileged to have grown up when he was around. He was a treasure, and is missed.

My art teacher taught us about Bob Ross when I was in third grade, and all of the kids were fascinated with him. For good reason. I miss that art teacher and Bob Ross, Rest In Peace
If it were not for Bob Ross I would still be drawing with graphite and coloring pencils. He made very easy to understand exactly what was needed to paint the picture and show you how. Not many people can do that. I will and do miss him and his show. I still love to paint and continue to do so its just alittle harder these days without him in the background of your mind rooting you on with all your happy little accidents that somehow finally make a beautiful picture. The alla prima style goes back to 15th century so either Bill Alexander was a lot older than he looked or got it wrong.

I never knew the man ever existed until a couple of weeks ago when I discovered his The Joy of Painting shows that were being aired on BBC Channel 4 TV here in the UK. What a great artist and the way he described his techniques as his painting comes alive. And then of course Iearnt that he had died oh so early in life. Hope you are still enjoying your painting, Bob, wherever you are - you were fabulous😁😀😁!!

To be fair, the man was already rich. He had a family, he got to share his love for painting with a ton of people, and he spent his time around wild animals, that's the richest you could be.

The fact is when you mentor someone, and give them that knowledge, you do it with the belief and intent that they will succeed you and become even better. That's the joy of mentor ship. Knowing you are giving the world your god given talent in hopes to create more beautiful things and better the world. To be jealous of that is your own karma. God bless Bob Ross you are dearly missed.

For the short time I found and practiced painting with Bob Ross, I was taken by his soft voice and easy style of teaching how to paint. It is with regret that I never learned to really paint by him. However, the teacher who did train me to paint was a student of Bob Ross! So happy that happened!
This great man was such a positive spirit and a great influence and painter, it goes to show how awesome and creative people and times were back then. It really is disturbing what people have turned into in this technological lazy day and age. We all need to take a leaf out of this great man's book and start using our creativity and brains again. Instead of relying on a device to do it for us. Get outside and appreciate what God has already given you, and start using it as creative inspiration! Stop being lazy, get back to basics. The Lorax that’s not true. In this case it is, but its not for MPW and Gordon. They have no feud it’s all made up. People who worked for ramsay for years asked him and he said that it’s all really only bs in the internet. There has been problems in the past but MPW is a great cook and he was never jealous of gordon. Gordon literally admitted that he tried to break mpw‘s record for the youngest cook with 3 michelin stars but he couldnt. They are both great cooks. No jealousy here, it’s all good between them.

I think it was probably more to do with 'student' becoming more famous than 'mentor', using a technique he'd learned from 'mentor'.
Alexander didn’t even invent the wet-on-wet technique. It’s centuries old. Rembrandt used to use the technique.
I hope that for his sake those comments were taken out of context. Because otherwise it says a lot about a person if they’re proclaiming to invent something that already long exists.

Well bob did copy him in a lot of ways they and practically the same camera angles and same supplies and stuff. but I would be kinda mad too if I had started doing wet on wet painting tutorials and someone else came in and did practically the same thing as me and got a lot more recognition for it and was looked at as the pioneer of that painting style
He did the same thing but when Bob started The Joy of Painting his teacher was done with his television show. Bob just continued it.

Wet on wet has been in use since the 15th-16th centuries, and was popularized by the French Impressionist painters. So, not invented by anyone in the 20th century. Both artists were making another generation aware of this great method, so there was no reason to get out of sorts over it. I learned a lot from Bob Ross’s show when I was in high school, and still painting decades later.

I remember watching bob ross on pbs alot when i was a kid. Im glad i did, his painting was pretty cool and i like the fact that he encouraged everybody to get out and paint something
I can understand that a person in military as long as he was and then retired, tells me that he had to get his peace inside himself. He achieved that through painting and his manner or method of speaking. My relatives ( retired from military) did end up doing arts whether it was through painting, pottery, music ect.. I always loved this since I was a child. I'm 55 now and retired nurse. I want my peace too. It comes in the form of painting and music and enjoying my family ect. ❤😊✌

Why is it that not one mention was made about his guests that would fit in his pocket? Squirrels, birds… he loved animals and a friend of his was a rehabilitator of birds, etc.. and he’d bring them out to show ppl! I loved Bob for trying to show us the joy of painting. I learned from him by watching his show. He was a wonderful kind soul. I’d ask him “ What is your favorite painting by any other painter?” RIP Bob Ross, you were a blessing.
