@Mr. Dog yep. i had a job as an administrator that was pretty easy but my god it felt awful. maybe it's because it was work from home and i had nobody to talk to while on hours but it was absolutely soul rending. it's like how some people hate work that doesn't challenge them. to them that challenge is the enjoyable part of working. to others its social interaction and group problem solving. it doesn't need to be your dream job. it just needs to be something that gets you up in the morning.
If these two made their own podcast I would listen to every episode. the chemistry between sungwon and bdg is so natural and casual, they both have such soothing voices and have really interesting takes. great episode!
ProZD talking about his skits and how he hasn't felt any motivation or excitement to do them for years and even recently kinda makes it seem like his recent skit in February was forced... then he said One Piece's latest episode was 958 and that BDG had 'just' quit his job, but that was at the end of December so this was definitely recorded around January before the skit. I'm glad to hear ProZD got some motivation back in the following month
Okay but can you imagine the SATISFACTION SungWon must've been feeling when Brian said "I watched almost all the anime you recommended" ? Also, the jump app is great, because there's Haikyuu on it and the manga is just, phenomenal
I feel like Brian feels pressured not to create a more niche content, aka content that you need to know about to understand. But the thing is, a lot of people liked the unraveled series despite not knowing exactly what is the episode about. cause it's just FUN and GOOD and INTERESTING. And I just wish that pressure is not stopping him from doing stuff, cause idk I'd watch it anyway, for the personality behind the content more than anything else. And I know a lot of other people feel the same.
I knew nothing of most of Unraveled, and came to the series totally blind because of BDG - I ended up rewatching episodes solely for the writing and humour. Absolute gold!

I started reading One Piece back in November. Shonen Jump app. I'm reading one chapter per day. Sometimes I get behind and read four or five chapters on the weekend, but mostly it's one chapter before bed. It's been wonderful. It absolutely makes sense why this has been running across three decades. The line "it's not a race it's a journey" is absolutely true. You'll never get to experience the hype, the amazing moments, the badass lines. You'll never see the greatness if you don't start. If anyone's on the fence, do it. Everyone's right. One Piece is just that good.

I loved Unravelled but not really anything else from Polygon so seeing BDG elsewhere is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Also, Summer Wars is dope af.
BDG bringing up Subs VS Dubs actually reminded me about how I watch shows. I'll watch Episode 1 twice, once in English, once in Japanese. When I've decided definitively which cast from Episode 1 I like more, I'll watch that one. ...Unless there's a VA in one version I like more, in which case, no question, I'm watching that. E.g., I started _Soul Eater_ recently and while both casts had some stinkers (JP Maka and ENG Black Star are my prime offenders), Todd Haberkorn as Kid and Micah Solusod as Soul is too enticing to not watch it in English.

Shonen Recommendation : LAW OF UEKI is fantastic and absolutely delivers--the show is entirely just tournament arcs, too. Every character's powers transform one thing into another--someone can make tomatoes turn into lava, another person can make their forehead diamonds, another can turn one second into ten seconds. Obviously some of these are more powerful than others, but it's interesting how inventive characters get with these powers. The main character? He can turn trash into trees! If you're reading Shonen Jump, don't miss out on CHAINSAW MAN. It's legitimately the best manga that's been written in the last five years. The only other recent manga that have come close and gotten me as excited have been Sengoku Youko and Kaiji. If you've read all of those, I can also highly recommend Doubutsu no Kuni (Animal Land in English) and Kingdom (written by Yasuhisa Hara--sorry the SEO for 'Kingdom' can be awful). As for the whole subs versus dubs debate--that held way more water back in the 80's/90's when dubs would entirely change the content of a show. Lots of purist (maybe rightfully) saw dubs as not representative of the actual product. Look into something like ROBOTECH, for example. Dubs nowadays are typically a full and earnest representation of the original media, but the argument has stuck around along with the purist mindset. That said, if English is your first language, some dubs carry cultural intonation and convey the significance of scenes better than watching the sub ever will for you. This can be especially true for comedy anime where jokes land much better because we don't have to read them to understand them. For some dubs that are genuinely worth watching and may absolutely improve the viewing experience : Golden Boy, FLCL, Space Dandy, Cowboy Bebop, Cromartie High School, BECK, Black Lagoon, Baccano, Full Metal Alchemist, Gundam : 08th MS Team (I'm partial to most of the English dubs we got for Gundam, especially Zeta and G Gundam), and Yu Yu Hakusho.
I dread when people recommend One Piece. I could get into the reasons why it wasn't for me, but the biggest thing is just that it's such a slog. The manga currently has 1007 chapters and is ongoing. When I look at that many manga chapters, I think "I could read so many other concluded series in the same amount of time." I did once finally give it a chance, but I didn't make it much further than the Skypeia arc. Even with 300 chapters down--roughly 6 straight years of collected manga--I couldn't say that it had told a story I'd be satisfied with if it ended right there. I considered some of my other favorite manga series: Dragon Ball: 194 chapters. Sengoku Youko. 100 chapters. Kaiji (Part 1). 151 chapters. Gatch Bell. 318 chapters. 20th Century Boys. 249 chapters. Bakuman. 176 chapters. Gambling Emperor Zero. 70 chapters. Uzumaki. 19 chapters. I get the appeal of having a storied manga with incremental development, but those journeys don't have to be over 800 chapters. Sometimes less is more. If that sort of long-running, heavily storied, many characters with actual growth thing appeals to you, then I'd much sooner recommend Kaiji or Kingdom, both of which are ongoing and still have a lower total chapter count than One Piece. If the big adventure sort of thing is what appeals to you, then I'd still suggest Stan Sakai's Usagi Yojimbo over One Piece.
