@@dianadoraen7864 Well, he certainly attended school (there are pics to that effect), Jewish families value literacy for at least the boys (being able to read the Torah is important), Mordecai is introverted and bookish and therefore would've spent more time reading, he's canonically the most intelligent character on the cast (Tracy mentioned it in a forum post), and from the pics I think his parents did what they could to make a good life for their kids. On the other hand, they lived in a tenement, which means they were poor. They still lived there when Mordecai was running for his life at... 17, I think? Hence, they didn't pull together enough money to get out of that environment. Small wonder, given that they were raising a sizable family (four children, until the baby died). The father died before Mordecai turned 13, which is part of why Mordecai went into crime (to provide for his family); in his letter (four years later), he tells them of his hidden savings and asks them to move to a healthier environment. I don't know the state of public libraries in the early 1900's (I think *All-of-a-Kind Family* was set in the 30's, but it's a good resource if you'd like to know some of what Mordecai's early life might've been like in a poor Jewish family of that timeframe), so perhaps he got a chance to read books that way, or perhaps his family acquired books in a strategic way that provided him with greater vocabulary. But yeah, they clearly did what they could with what they had, and it added up to a child with an above-average vocabulary.
@Arkylie Wait, when was it mentioned that he lost his sister? Not sure how exactly it was in those circumstances but 4 children might not have been considered that big. Also about the letter, did he actually send it(after writing it again)? From what I remember from the comic he torn it.
@@ImieNazwiskoOK According to the wiki on Lackadaisy's core website, Mordecai's sister Hannah died as an infant; this was cited to a 2009 forum post from Tracy that is now missing. I presume the forum at some point got an upgrade and is lost to history. You might be able to send Tracy a question about Mordecai's sisters. As far as the letter, he tears the bottom off because it has blood from his stress nosebleed. He then tries to get someone to send the letter, but no one will. And then he expects to get killed, but Atlas saves him. This is all in the flashback while Serafine is trying to convince him to join the cult; I think Posthaste is the likely comic, or thereabouts (I get to that section by looking up Keepsake, one of my favorite pages). In my vampire AU series, he's not saved from the thugs, they stab him and steal the letter and plan to go after his family thanks to the info in the letter. But then Vampire Atlas happens by, gives him the typical vampire offer, and stops the thugs.
Wooo! This was AMAZING. I love how mordecai has a little soft spot for his sisters. He doesn't act much emotional (.. Due to erm... Professionalism.) but acts morely happy. Keep going!

I love this comic and you did it really well! The only notes I have would be the pronunciation of grot-EH-squerie and the fact that "were its mouth not stuffed...." isn't a question. It's supposed to be "one might expect it to be pleading... were its mouth not stuffed... with sauerkraut."
I've read the comics and as far as I know they just aren't mentioned in the "current" time. But someone said the younger one, probably the one shown here, is dead by a disease. I don't know about that, maybe something I missed, or maybe it's something they pulled out of their ass. Believe whichever account I guess.

The dead sister you're talking about is Hannah, the youngest of the siblings, who was already dead in this comic. Awww his sister is so cute, and when he realised its him it's so sweet

Makes you wonder why he didn't pull the trigger on Ivy now.
It’s because Mordecai was very close to Atlas and Ivy is Atlas’s goddaughter

My guess they were doing pretty good before his father died. His education had a nice start and then he kept in up himself.
