This is not LCWs weak spot, but rather a spot where he can't do anything bad to Lin Dan. You should have covered the other options LCW actually has in this situation. Long clear to Lin Dans forehand is your death, everybody knows that. Long Clear to his backhand has to be very good, otherwise he is intercepting it. The Cross court drop shot is nice as a surprise element like you showed in the video, but if he does it more often, he will be and was punished. Playing like LCW in this situation is the right thing to do. He is a better tactician than all of us after all and if it's not him then his coaches are.
problem is that lin dan anticipated all of them, in some of them lee ended in a really bad situation; make different shots or better drops . but as you say they are better in tactis than us
agree with you, lcw racket technique shots placement are probably the best in the world, looking at how his able to play such confident cross court shots including cross court netting. but the problem is with his stamina against lin dan. you can tell that lin dan actually is still as fast and able to attack in game 3 while lcw has drastically slowed down. the cross court net shot is too risky, because if lin dan is able to return lcw has to run much more to return the net.
Lee takes the shot late because Lin Dan's return has great deception, it's really hard to predict where he's gonna hit the shuttle. LCW knows that well.
This is a very well made video BUT the tactics between these players are much more complex than this. One of the weak points of LCW is the long forehand corner, but if you look at the tactics Lin Dan has used to beat LCW so many times you will see that he's attacking LCW's second weak point - the backhand defence. therefore LCW want to keep it on the forehand side of lin dan as he is not as dangerous there. if he would cross from the deep forehand it's very easy for lin dan to get the straight smash opportunity to LCW's backhand which is exactly what he wants. So apart from being lin dan's tactics it's also the same from his opponents side. lin dan is playing with the right tactics but so is Lee Chong Wei too!! On the other hand, the reason why LD can play with this tactic is that his shot quality on the push to his opponent's long forehand is very good. on the match point in the olympics final it wasn't and because of that LCW was able to do a one leg jump, which he couldn't in the other situations. from that position he can play any shot and I am sure that if the quality was like that on shots to the long forehand in the world championships 2011, Lee Chong wei would be able to punish those shots as well. In the end everything comes down to shot quality, if the quality on the shots are not good enough the tactics wont even matter that much. So in my opinion, what is most important to study in these matches is the quality in everything they do. I would suggest an analysis on the match between Chen Long and Lee Chong Wei from the final of this year's olympics where you maybe compare the lenght of the shots, the placement and how close to the line their attack is and how tight the net play is. the big reason why chen long is beating lcw is that his quality is better so I would love to see an edited video on that! Btw - your videos are really good shuttle flash and I'm very happy that someone is keeping it up when I'm not doing it any more :D
Park Eun Wan and prior to the last point, Lin Dan lifted too far in the same corner and sent it out. that might have caused him to play a shorter than ideal lift at the end as to avoid sending another one out
LCW's shot quality is not as good as the two chinese rivals, he used his well trained movements and agressive game play to get advantage. So when he was being counter attacked he coulnt able to get out of the situation because it needs the Shot Quality!!
The pace is also a big factor which affects shot quality. For example, if your pace is a lot slower than your opponent, the clears and lifts would be a lot higher as your reaching the shot late. therefore this could cost dearly as the person wouldn't be able to gain control the game. In 2016 Lin Dan was quite slow so his shot quality was not the best as you can tell he made more mistakes in the year.
Actually, lin dan is very dangerous both in his overhead and forehand smash. His overhead smash is so steep and hard and his forehand side smash is very unpredictable. Not saying that his overhead is predictable or his forehand isn't strong enough.
This crosscourt forehand drop of LCW is his deadliest weapon. He is using it a lot against Lin Dan and all other players. The reason Lin Dan uses so much the push LCW to the forehand is because he is left handed and will have an advantage with most returns. If LCW tries to clear he gets smashed from the best side of LD, if he tries cross clear, it likely to get smashed, cross drop is dangerous too as you are out of position... So, LCW actually choosing the best option for him most of the time... Forehand corner is defenately the weekest pkace when you playing against lefthander, I have seen it on a few occasions.
Yes, because u mentioned the skill, that is correct, but the real reason for the right handed weakness is because they use wrong footwork to deal with the forehand Push.
@@abhianikurapati3467 In my view it is mostly psychological advantage of Lin Dan that made him bit LCW, he is just so alfa. Speed wise, variation and footwork LCW was surely the goat. The three things Lin Dan was a god that no other could do - being extremely relaxed, almost lazy, preserving the energy more then others, sudden pace injections that were scary brutal and ability of being absolutely perfect at the crucial moments of the game...
@@stradglider bro he didnt do any magic to be absolutely perfect at crucial part of and be normal other time. also what psycological advantage does he have that lcw doesnt? its just his strategy that has worked. coming to footwork, as you told lin dan is relaxed, energy conserving and all, all these are again due to his footwork. he just walks back while others do chasse steps. so lin dan is better and goat with footwork. according to you as you told cross drop is too dangerous when you r out of position. this literally made no sense. LCW wouldn't even have won rio semis match if thats the case. but thats not history. a cross clear or cross drop or even a straight clear could have worked for lcw to stop lin dan from capitalizing on rallies after taking a late forehand. i cant type anymore so agree or not idc. im probably not going to reply anymore.
That surprised cross-court dropshot has used at the exactly right moment and win LCW the biggest match point of his career. In my opinion, I am sure LCW have the ability to return the back forehand shot in anywhere he wants. But returning straight 90% of the time against Lin Dan might also part of LCW's tactics. *In other hand, some may not notice that Lin Dan is very good at blocking cross-court drop or smash. LCW knows this as well. This is all mind-games between Lin Dan and LCW, they understand each others games and ability.
im guessing that a cross court net/drive would be suicide from that position against lin dan, same whit straight/cross clear because he could smash it (specially when younger) or intercept it (that stick smash he has) if it isnt high enough. So maybe the problem isnt variation but increase the quality of the dropshot??? With this two legends its very difficult to know, there are so many factors when playing each other. Maybe Lee prefers to run before giving lin dan attack, or maybe he is just unaware of whats happening there... Still really good video, ive watched lin dan vs lee chong wei for years and never realised how much damage lin dan was doing there, you got a like shutteflash
Dat celebration from lcw at the end was a bit outside my imagination, it was so wild. When I look at LD celebrate, he was trying to say 'I did it, I beat myself'. But LCW was like 'I finally beat LD'. I just think there is a difference in the mindset.
Jacob Hoberg. Most of the time in single game, the player will try to send deep forehand especially in professional competition, deep backhand is actually much more easier for player to perform smash.
Maybe it's related to their racket skill. Lin Dan seems to keep the same angle of his racket head facing inside the court when he hits his forehand shots - just like when we're holding our racket for backhand defense. Then for all his forehand shots (high clearance, drop shots, drive) seem to be a slice when he usually rotate the racket in full circle to create the force. So different shots from him look the same and the shuttle seems to spin harder as well. While other players seem to smash like using a hammer. They use too much energy of the whole body to hammer down the racket at their forehand corner. For which, lots of them look fitter than Lin Dan but lose their stamina sooner than him.
awesome vid, the ending deceptive dropshot was epic, it showed lcw finally did learn from his mistake and overcame himself and the fact that it was the last point in the last match during the olympic of the two legends only make it make more badass.
Mohd Dazli Yes, when he's well prepared. Talking about single shots is meaningless at such a level of game. It was a series of rallies that made Lee late for the best attacking opportunity.
i also noticed this clever strategy during this match. he kept lifting to a position where it's uncomfortable for lcw to take smash. he did the trick again at 2012 london olympic game when it got to a decisive third game.
I loved this kind of video. Strategy-oriented, I hope they can make more videos in that same style with other players, as well as male and female. Congratulations to the channel
It's very clear that Lin Dan reads the game very well and always tries to play shorter distance that Lin Dan lifts could go to the last line so gets time to see the shuttle and make up mind really well
Min stuhle video kemaren yg lindan vs lee chong wei olimpic 2008 yang pakai soundtracknya music alan walker yg force mana ya? Kalo ga salah kemaren tu ada skarang kok ga ada ya boleh di post lgi min?
Thanks for this. Interesting analysis. LCW's weakness is not so much his deep forehand corner, but the fact that he sometimes loses focus and plays a run of loose shots. Another example is his cross-court drop shot. Sometimes he will play these taking the shuttle very low, around his ankles, when he could have taken it higher. The result is a rising shot with his opponent frequently in good position near the net, so these can often can be picked off at the net. Even if they are not picked up, the return is usually a strong one that puts LCW immediately at a relative disadvantage and can quickly lead to losing the point.
I think it's also because Lin Dan is left handed player, that kind of return by LCW is hard for right handed player to return the shuttle.. But because Lin Dan is left handed he got many option if LCW return the shuttle like that..you r very genius by figuring this out..
He's been doing smashing crosscourt more often so it's likely his overhead drop shot will go closer to the middle than usual due to the rhythm of smashing crosscourt constantly
To answer your question, let's look at LCW's strengths to see how Chen Long turned them against LCW: 1) LCW's overhead smashes are his lethal weapons. Most other players would have had it otherwise, but LCW simply excels at this. If you noticed, his overhead smashes, coupled with good follow ups are what make him a formidable opponent on court. In the beginning of the match and in almost the end, several unanswered points were won simply by using this tactic. Chen Long knew that LCW was fighting against his age and height, so he readied himself to anticipate LCW's smashes by returning them cross-court. This effectively created a loophole because LCW would have to cover a longer distance in order to retrieve Chen Long's smash returns. This happened a few times that, had worn down LCW, and created a mental barrier in him that prevented him from attempting this tactic too often. 2) Players who had played against LCW knew well enough not to play at the net against him. It's also a matter of mental play: The more you try to avoid the shot one is good at, the more him/she would play that shot. Most players would try to avoid net exchange with LCW, but Chen Long was so confident during the match that he turned LCW's strengths against him. Most of his net shots were so effective against LCW. As far as I can recall, LCW failed at least 4 times to return Chen Long's netshots, whereas, Chen Long only failed once. And also, to be fair, LCW was aging and even though he may not have run out steam, he struggled to keep up with Chen Long's quick response and aggressive play. Having said that, I would like to also point out that I've seen many older players who have won against much younger players. So, winning is really a matter who has the strongest mental strength on the day of tournament.
according to me i think taufik hidayats main flaw is that he doesnt attempt to hit an overhead shot but often does a backhand shot. But according to him it is not a flaw due to his strong backhand power
I dont think its LCW weakness that he doesnt do varietions when he is shot with long forehand clear..its just he cannot shoot high at LD forehand because LD always has an anticipating jump smash coming..hes playing safe and LD is waiting for him to commit mistake..either a mistake in shooting too low drops or low enough clears..thats just my opinion though..

In that position, LCW returns are the safest against LD. I really doubt that is LCW weak point.
Is it because LD is a left-hander so possibly make LCW this "reflex" return no working?
Yes, that makes sense.

The deceptive shot is imba, but it also has a weakness. It takes a longer time to reach the net if the enemy drops.
i think it's partially his main strategy too, keep peppering the forehand then attack the backhand.
nice!
What tactic did Chen Long use in the OG final then, or did LCW simply run out of steam?
Age was not on LCW side.
To answer your question, let's look at LCW's strengths to see how Chen Long turned them against LCW:
1) LCW's overhead smashes are his lethal weapons.
Superb
now i can defeat LCW, thanks OP...
