  • Every Centenarian I talk to, people who are over 100 years old. tell me one of the things to a long life is visiting a Japanese hot spring or onsen regularly. It's one of many things but I wanted to know why and how hot springs can not only make us look and feel younger but help us live longer. I traveled to Nakanosawa Onsen, Tsurunoyu Onsen and Tamagawa Onsen to look at how special the waters are, geothermal heated spring water full of natural chemical compounds and minerals. Is there more to it than just soaking in a bath?

I went to the sand onsen in Ibuski which you had profiled on your previous channel. Where one's enjoyment is solely based on the skill of the shoveler: My travel partner was being burned from below and just wanted it to be over, whereas I was warm and cozy from all sides and never wanted to get out.

Here is a Fun Fact for you: We live in Banff, AB, Canada, about 500M from a natural thermal hot springs. About 50 years ago a resident built a pond at his property (search Wheeler House, Banff). He put Gold Fish from a pet shop in it, and they lived year round in the water that did not freeze. Parks Canada demolished the buildings on he property about 11 years ago, but did not destroy the pond. I caught one of those Goldfish about 20 years ago from the pond, and placed him in a hexagonal style tank in our living room (filled with RO water). The life span of a Goldfish in Wheelers environment is 2-5 years. We named him 'Wheeler' and to my amazement, he is still alive today. I often wonder why 'Wheeler' exhibits this amazing life span living in water that was not oxygenated until recently, and often can have elevated nitrate levels because I am negligent with regular water changes.that will reduce the ammonium build up. I never thought you'd become attached to a Goldfish, but after 20 years, I really do not want to find Wheeler floating when I get up in the Morning. Watching your video, I can't help but wonder if Wheeler's longevity might have some clues in the subjects you cover in this video. Perhaps I should make my own video about 'Wheeler'.

Great video, John, thank you so much for sharing!
Last year we stayed at Kashiwaya Ryokan in Shima Onsen, Gunma, and it has become one of our best memories of that journey. It's not cheap but we wanted to have that luxury experience at least once on our adventure in Japan.
The beauty of that wonderful ryokan (apart from the amazing staff, delicious food and beautiful surroundings) is that they not only have a large public bath but also three traditional private open air onsen. And even more luxorious: we stayed at one of the two rooms with our own in-room open-air bath! For those who are very shy (like me) and still want to have an traditional onsen experience, this is the perfect onsen. And there's no problems with tattoos because of this!

I can totally believe that every onsen is unique. I felt like I had that in one of them in Fujinomiya. It was inside a generic hotel building but one of the onsens was connected to the outside as the roof only had bamboo on it with air gaps. So I was basically sitting in the warm onsen on a light rainy night and I had the whole thing to myself. And it was honestly so relaxing. I also have minor feet problems so after a long day of walking, sitting in an onsen really helps my feet heal.

Northern European countries like Finland, Sweden and Norway have above average life expectancies as well just a year or two below Japan’s. Similar to Onsen they enjoy hot saunas as well. Diet and fitness also plays a part. Japan’s diet is rich with fish protein and generally the caloric intake is lower compared to the west resulting in lower rates of obesity. The Japanese also eat a lot of fermented foods like miso and natto which are healthy foods that improve the health of the digestive system and helps to manage chronic conditions such as inflammation. My understanding is the the diets of younger Japanese are becoming more westernized so it will be interesting to see what effect this will have in he future.

Wow excellent work John ! Probably your best professional montage. I had to laugh when you showed various onsen enjoyed by and featuring you, followed with a quick transition to monkeys enjoying the onsen too, lol. I love and respect animals as you do. I liked the informative sections, and notice the very well selected and blended music more than once. This is worthy of prime air time on TV. I don't know if your live stream is your bread and butter but definitively keep doing these montages You will get recognition higher up.

Love the animals here - even the crows, sometime. Live streaming makes me happy and helps me connect with our community in a new, closer way. It’s an amazing tool to feature something NOW. This is story telling :) I love it.

@@onlyinjapan thanks for the reply. Doing what makes us happy is important ! I learned that the hard way. Before I had a job i hated, around people i didn't like even though it was paying well it was taking a toll on me mentally and physically as i am someone who needs plenty of sleep, leisure time, and hobby to recharge and it was unrelenting high stress leaving me with no time left.
But now in my entrepreneur work I have time to feed song birds out of my window some even come inside. Did you know crows are songbirds but their croaking sound isn't very melodious, is it ? You're good at imitating it. :D
Live stream is good sometimes and sometimes not that good. Good live streams require preparation and planning, it seems. Total improvisation without prepared content can be boring. I know you like interacting with live viewers, i have to say sometimes it annoys me when there is too much of it. I am more interested in content than other people's reaction and teasing.

I enjoy all of your videos and this one was no exception. It is interesting to note, though, on the subject of longevity, that an area like Hong Kong has a life expectancy comparable to Japan while being a conurbation largely devoid of nature and, I presume, all the pitfalls of a modern city. Clearly longevity is a complex subject that merits more investigation. Although, no one would detract from the beauty and relaxation afforded by traditional Japanese Onsen.

Great vid. I guess those body temperature benefits apply to sauna visits as well. But onsens have the added benefits of minerals. I found onsens (and sentos to a lesser extent) to be more relaxing than saunas.
I can't really tell yet what my favo(u)rite onsen is though. I've only visited onsens in Beppu and Takayama.

I do not think it is just Japanese people necessarily that look younger because of habit. But there are people all around the World from Philippines to Latin America. Japanese work life is so stressful and a lot of adults in Japan cannot handle it. As we all know stress ages you very quickly. Getting out of the big city is the first step. Living somewhere serene and quiet is the next.

I should never go to an Onsen, unless someone wants to save me from disintegrate. When I was younger and my parents had a bathtub I spent usually at least 1-2 hours in there.
    Amazing video btw. Very informative!
