Suspecting a leak in your car’s AC system but can’t figure out where it is? Let’s explore some methods to detect and locate AC leaks:
Visually Inspect Your Vehicle:
Check the condition of your car’s AC components, including the condenser, compressor, and refrigerant lines.
While visual inspection alone may not easily reveal leaks, it’s a quick and easy method that’s worth doing.
Finding AC Leaks with Soap Solution:
Create a thick water soap solution and pour it into a spray bottle.
Fully charge the AC system and turn on the engine and AC.
Spray the solution on all exposed components of the AC.
Inspect the sprayed parts. If there are leaks, the escaping gas will foam up the soap.
Note that this method works only on exposed components of the car’s air conditioner1.
Using Refrigerant Dye:
Mix a UV dye into the refrigerant (some refrigerants may already have dye pre-mixed).
Once the dye mixes with the refrigerant, it will illuminate under UV light.
If there are any leaks, you should be able to see dyed gas flowing out of the car AC.
Nitrogen Pressure Test (Advanced):
Check for existing leaks in the system.
Purge any remaining nitrogen from the air conditioner.
Attach pressure probes and feed nitrogen into the unit.
Let the nitrogen stand for approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
Spray different areas of the car AC and search for leaks2.
Remember, detecting and repairing AC leaks promptly ensures optimal cooling performance and prevents further damage.
