Very well done...especially since you incolved your son in your project. I have 4 kids, oldest now is 19 and training to be a commercial airline pilot. It goes fast...good video. Thank you.
When the mouse moved in the first thing he or she did was disconnect the start switch to prevent the owner from starting the generator, that would give you quite the fright. It makes perfect sense. Great video, thank you for sharing.
Gee, my eyes nearly popped out of their socket's when I saw the state of that generator - I never thought that it could made to run again! Mr. Condon you are an excellent mechanic and in my opinion your video's are the best on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I had one of these a 1200watt surge then 1000 running. Had it for years for camping. It started everytime and ran smooth. It mostly ran our 5k watt air conditioner. My wife loved air when it was 90s and humid, and she got it. We bought a bigger camper with a bigger ac unit. so I stored it for a year. My neighbor bought a trailer similar to our old one and had a 5k ac unit. I gave it to him and 5 years later he's still using it. I didn't think it would last more than a couple years when I bought it. At 15 years it still runs. I don't know.
Dude I put at least 2000 hours onto one of those way back when I couldn't afford electricity and it was all I had. Those can be good units but the piston in mine busted after all that use, I had to clean the carbon out of it about 5-6 times as well
Hey James, I got hooked on your videos and look forward to a new one every Thursday. Funny how your videos have changed, your whispering in this one. I have one of those Harbor Freight generators, mine is called Storm Cat. Anyway around 6 years ago when brand new I set it up with some lights for after hours plumbing work on a job I was running. It started and ran fine except it’s pretty loud. I shut it off after about 5 to 10 minutes as the plumbers were still setting up. When I went to restart it the pull cord broke off in my hand. Since then I have not needed a generator and have not been motivated to fix it. I’m getting ready for a camping trip and would like to have a generator to keep my camper battery charged. Yesterday I got the generator out of storage thinking I only needed to replace the cord, I discovered the return spring is broken! Ugh! I ordered a new starting mechanism on line for $15. You say at the end of your videos, “I hope this helps someone”. I hope that someone is me when I put it back together and try to start it after 6+ years. - Wayne
Given rat/mouse droppings I'd want to make the first spray with Methylated spirits (denatured alcohol) to kill any infection risk. Alcohol will carry about 1% of oil (any) and make a sanitiser that leaves a film of penetration/protection.
Great work getting that little two stroke generator fixed and running, them generators use a CDI (capacitive discharge ignition) system and coil, the part with the two wires on you called a fuse is the CDI unit, I like them little two stroke generators
Hi James I have a performance power 780 watt generator which is exactly the same as this one, except its light grey. It's a little champ for our caravan holidays. I've also got a rockworth powertask honda clone that I'm about to restore, which runs but produces no power. I found out that the capacitor is bad with it being a brushless motor. Keep up the great work.
Well, I feel blessed. I live in south Texas and I have never seen a mouse nest in any engine. I have found a few snakes and geckos and fireants but they don't toxic pee and eat the wiring. They can potentially kill you, but that would negate the necessity for a generator. Cute kid.
Thanks. Had a mouse living in my RV fuse box for a few months right at the top. That mouse pee dripping from the top across all the fuses was not good.
I have an RV and a sewage transport tank. I went to hook the tank up, and discovered that mice had eaten the connecting hose - It looked like a slinky!
Yuck, that thing was nasty in the beginning. You need a sandblast cabinet with crushed walnut shell abrasive for cleaning up that sort of thing, I've been using that stuff in mine and it's great, it doesn't etch soft metals like aluminum the way most abrasives do but it sure cleans them up. I've been using it in mine to clean small engine parts and have been really impressed. Takes carbon buildup off cylinder heads like water hosing off mud.
It's amazing how tiny little rodents can mess up a nice generator. I'm surprised that some people would store a generator where mice can get at it knowing what will happen. If it was stored in a box with some mouse repellent found at most places like Lowes, etc. the mice wouldn't go near it, lol. I think you need a small sandblaster cabinet for those rusty parts, would look a lot nicer plus a little matt spray would protect the blasted parts from rerusting. The for the Vids Jim! Jim K. :)
Took some looking, wanted to see what you have encountered with these cheaper units. They go for about 150 -195 now and Harbor Freight here doesn't have them anymore.
Fun(?) Fact: When I briefly trained in telephone repair (long and sad story, not relevant) the trainers told us straight out that we should NEVER try to strip wires using our teeth, and ALWAYS wash our hands after handling the wires. This is because there was often literal poison underneath the insulation to kill any rodents which decided to chew on the wiring, and it would kill us too.
I have heard, that some wire manufacturers to be more 'green', had begun to use SOY based plastics for insulation. Mice LOVE that. Guess what? Many automotive manufacturers now use that wire as well for their harnesses! Going 'green' is not always the best bet.
Amazed that the power head wasn’t internally corroded. Always glad to see places where Scouting is functioning! Did your scout’s involvement help him earn an activity badge?
I’m wondering why harbor freight hasn’t made a similar generator with their little 3hp 4 cycle engine like they put on the 1 inch water pump! It would be awesome because then you would not have to use mix fuel.
That is a great question. I see the opposite on a lot of generators that can produce 10000 watts and the largest plug in it is a 30 amp / 240 volt plug.
i got given an identical looking generator from my neighbour, a couple days ago :) He had an hour meter on it.. 37.5 mins, is all its done haha stale fuel in tank, but petcock was off, carb was dry and MINT, so defo a true 37.5 mins run time in its life... Gave me it for free :D
I got one years ago, never used it. problem is, can really only run lights with it. For all you butt connector and wire nut people, this is how wiring is done. Too much vibration, heat, etc. to not solder and heat shrink tube it.
Do you have a concern for hantavirus? Down here in southwest first thing would've been hose down with lysol or similar product then clean it up. 😬😰🥵😱🤒🤮☠
I have one of those, it is just a different name brand but it is the same generator. The unit won't put out any power unless you rev the engine up, full throttle. Then it puts out power, let the RPMs drop, and out goes the power. What would cause that ??? GOT ANY IDEAS
Make sure the engine is running at around 3600 for 60 hertz or 3000 rpm for 50 hertz (depending on where you live). If too slow generators will not make power. I believe this generator is brushless. There is a capacitor on the back of the front panel by the outlets. You should remove it and see if the uF is written on it and replace it with a matching one. If you want to be sure that is the problem then you can discharge it and do a capacitance test on it to see if its bad. Normally that is the issue with brushless generators. Here is a link (not sure if this is exactly the one you need). www.generatorguru.com/capacitor-block-78622104/
@@jcondon1 I know what RPM it normally runs at because it did work before but now to get anything out of it I have to rev it to about 5,000 RPM and when I let off the throttle the power immediately goes out

Time flys, having time with your kids will be very very much missed one of these days. Love and teach them every minutes you can 😊

For the price -- Great little gens. Mine is hard to start but once it is running, it will carry quite a load.
I agree, for the price it is very good.
Nice job, as usual. Can’t believe people treat equipment like that!

Good to see your Cub Scout in the video. I hope he has moved up to Boy Scouts and on his way to Eagle.
hi james that little tail gate gene, you gave yourself a lot of work for very little money , just did it for the buzz yes
Had never worked on a 2 stroke generator. Price seemed good at the time, until I opened it up.

right on James , ENJOYED !! watched many of you older vids in the last few days .. Thanks !!
Thanks! The older ones where definitely not as good, but that one was memorable.
And suddenly youtube algorithm showed this up. Exactly what I was looking for.
That mouse was living rent free 😅
It's so funny I ALWAYS forget to slide the heat shrink thru the wire first
Details...
Been there, too
Or you don’t slide it far enough out of the way, and it starts shrinking up.Arrrgh

It looks like you need a BFH for that carb!
From the damage done to the machine, it looks like a whole herd of mice contributed to the destruction.

I hate meeces to pieces! A cartoon reference from long forgotten cartoon, Mr. Jinks and Pixie.

There is a few aluminum case cleaners available. I used them then after a clear coat spray.

Manage to find something? Local second-hand markets seem to show a good deal every so often.

Mouse pee for sure
Yea once pee is heated up

Per Nasa and others who have tested it, crimping beats solder for reliability. Has to be good crimps with good parts and good tools, of course.
