I did the same gauge pod a few weeks ago. It's much easier if you use add-a-fuse in the driver side footwell fusebox (cigarette lighter fuse)for power and main fusebox rear light for gauge night mode. you don't have to cut any factory wire if you do it this way. for an added bonus your gauge pod is now running its own fuse so you don't have to worry blowing the fuse when you plug in something like a laptop charger.
Hi William, I am planning to do this mod this next week. I am done with Sensors and the gauge pod. My biggest problem is the wiring. I like the solution you mentioned here. As it seems to be clean and easy. But Japanda tuning guy says it is not the right solution. Cutting factory wiring, soldering/ connector clips is the right way. Does your set up still work ? For my new auto gauges I have 4 wires coming from gauge which should be connected to . 1. Red - Battery + 2. Black - Battery - 3. White- Ignition Switch + 12V 4. Orange- Dash lighting/ headlights Could you please guide me where I can find these wires or Fuses. My gauge pod is located on the air vent. So, I am looking to connect the sensor wires either in Fuse box or wire harness below steering wheel. Any leads are appreciated.
I confirm it works. One cable i connected to fuse number 1 (cigar/lighter) and second one to fuse number 29 (tail lights). Thanks to that the display of gauges only turns on when i turn on my lights. Of course I used fuse adapters with additional 2A fuse. Im really thankful for that tip 👍👍

Also the S2 runs significantly more pressure on the oil system than S1
Thanks for the feedback, it will come on handy! I don't even want to think about the Pillar pods xD At the beginning i wanted to install that one, but after a lot of though about it, i went for the dash one, and i'm glad i did :D

I put together a budget build for this same style of gauge pod on the dash recently. I chose Glowshift gauges for oil pressure, oil temp and water temp as it was a budget friendly brand but they are still good and stylish gauges. I used the same mishimoto water coolant adapter as in this video, but instead of a sandwich plate adapter, (which can leak, not give you the most accurate oil pressure readings, and leaves very little room for your filter on a series 1 RX8) I opted to install my oil pressure and oil temp sensors into the banjo bolts running to the oil coolers. You can drill and tap your own banjo bolts virtually for free, or there are some available online already threaded for 1/8 inch NPT for 25 bucks each. This location for these sensors is ideal because you are getting oil pressure data very close to the factory oil pressure switch and temp reading just before the oil reaches the oil cooler. As for the dashboard Guage pod, there is one for left hand drive rx8 on amazon for about 50 bucks. Throw in 4 new crush washers for the modified banjo bolts for a dollar each. I priced this setup out at about 350 bucks not including silicon, pipe thread sealant, or fuse taps (but each of these things are cheap enough). I'd recommend the fuse tap route so you don't have to butcher up any factory wiring in your car, and also drill your own grommet hole through the firewall near the hood release cable so you can run your wires through a proper grommet to protect them.
luigi martinez ill put a detailed photo of it tomorrow on my forum's gauge install page. The link is in the description. Ot just visit my site www.drivenbymadness.eu under Rx8 hub :)
I was looking to get rid of that useless navigator that is stuck with the maps of 2006 or something (ofc I've never even bothered to try use the thing at all).. The instructions are clear ("take it out" :P:P), but too much of an hassle to do for me mate, I'll leave the thing closed xD. I'm more for mechanical stuff than electric one ;)
hahaha as you wish mate. You could also get a used dash without the navigation and just do the install. The electrical part is super easy and fast, especially if you use the connectors i have used :)
Yes, but i would rather buy a new top part that doesn't have the LCD screen and cut that one. This way you can always go back to the lcd if you want to.
It really depends on the type of gauges you go with since most gauges come with the sensor included. If you are using the sensor adaptors that he suggests in the video, just make sure the sensors are 1/8 inch NPT threads. Although, I would not recommend either of the two sensor adaptors he suggests for a few reasons. The sandwich plate adaptor is a bad choice because if you have a series 1 RX8, it is going to be a very tight fit for your oil filter. These sandwich plates are also notorious for leaking oil from the sealing surface because you are creating more leakage pathways. Also this sandwich plate is taking pressure readings after the oil passes through the filter element, so you aren't getting a true pressure reading from the system. For the water temp sensor adaptor, this is also a bad choice because this adaptor will only give you true water temp readings AFTER your thermostat opens up at operating temperature and begins circulating coolant through your radiator. A much better solution for sensor locations would be a 13mm or 1/2 inch sensor adaptor tapped into your heater hose, as this coolant is circulating through your engine from the moment you turn your car on and will give you the most accurate temperature readings straight from your engine. As for your oil pressure sensor and oil temp sensor locations, you can get banjo bolt sensor adaptors from either rotary performance or from knight sport (ordered from Japan). These adaptors will tap into the oil feed lines running to your oil cooler(s). Place the oil temp sensor on the oil inlet side of your oil cooler to get engine oil temp reading before the oil is cooled, this will tell you true oil temps coming straight after passing through your engine which is what you want. As for the oil pressure sensor, place this one on that same oil feed line going into your engine block located right next to your rx8's factory oil pressure switch (this is the dummy sensor that tells you you have an ambiguous amount of oil pressure on your dash). If you buy the knight sport sensor adaptor, they have 3 different styles I believe. 2 of them just have different thread sizes depending on what sensors you get, but the 3rd style is a double sensor adaptor with 1/8in NPT threads that allows you to intall both the oil temp and oil pressure sensors in the same location which is nice.
the gauge is dependent on calibration and calibration is done by reading the obd, which is precise. So i would rely on the OBD2 reading of water temperature as a primary source. The gauge has a marrgin of error of 1-2 degrees C + or -(which is nothing) but it's pretty precise.
Tried this and got everything working but now my radio won’t turn on or light up. The A/C switch and Hazard button still works but that it really. Any tips or anything I might’ve messed up?
I have the GT and I don't want to put it on the dash because of the navigation system, I don't want to put them in the center console because then I wouldn't be able to charge my phone... 🤷♂️
Does it smoke only on startup or constantly? If there is a constant thick white smoke that doesn't go away, the coolant seals are leaking coolant in the engine. To fix this you're gonna need a rebuild

You can't get an EU approval for it from the factory (TUV/ABE). it "obstructs" visibility and since it's not an OEM feature it's a "danger hazard". Welcome to the EU :D

How do you like your sohn adapter? How often do you have to fill it with 2 stroke?
Love it, depends on the length and style of driving. If you drive it hard every day, about 3-4 weeks. If you drive it normally 3-4 months.
Do u have links to USA Essexrotarystore products? Its uk only
Quick question, are there any specific sensors you used? Or would just any work?

Yer is it 38mm or 32mm ?? He’s link says 38mm. But rx8 page says 32mm
Tried this and got everything working but now my radio won’t turn on or light up. The A/C switch and Hazard button still works but that it really. Any tips or anything I might’ve messed up?
The pins on the radio are not properly aligned. See my usb adapter install for a mire accurate answe on the solution
I have the GT and I don't want to put it on the dash because of the navigation system, I don't want to put them in the center console because then I wouldn't be able to charge my phone... 🤷♂️
Your water joint pipe size 38mm ??
You literally lost me at 11:30 thats when I gived up 😂
Is it the same for Right hand drive?
yes
@@Drivenbymadness 😊 thanks
No grounding the water temp adapter or oil temp sandwich plate?
The grounding has been prolonged inside the cabin and grounded under the gauges :)
Driven By Madness oh ok thanks
Wire it to the fuse with adapter that will save 30 mins
What is the normal water and engine oil temperature for rx8?
220f fir the water top temp most the time it’s 190
I thought you could daisy chain these gauges?
what if mine is right side driver seat
Do I really need the aftermarket gauges if I'm just daily driving?
Yes if you want to monitor
And avoid mishaps
hpw do you get the sensors
Good afternoon, what is the size of the water temperature adapter?.2009
Dont have my rx8 at home right now... You can check the link in description to find the one i used.
Thanks
38mm
How can I mute the Beeper?
💪💪💪💪💪
Hell yeah 👌😃
You know your "protective tubing" is heat shrink yeah?
yes sir, it was the only thing i had at home, later it was replaced with the plastic tube
do these gauges come with the sensors?
sensor yes, but for the ocolant and oil you need to buy the mishimoto adapter for hose and oil sancwich plate.
and when done!
What if I have a Mazda rx8 that came with stock navigation system
Side mounts, which wiring is a bit easier
Time to make an RX8 have a 350z interior look.
Why do all of these mods seem so far beyond my capabilities....are there ways I can just bring this somewhere to install for me???
Hello! What is the diameter of water adapter?
i saw 38 mm
by the way, nice crocs)))
I'm wanting to buy an RX 8 on Monday I found one for $3,991 with 79,000 miles. It smokes a little, do you think I should get it?
Does it smoke only on startup or constantly? If there is a constant thick white smoke that doesn't go away, the coolant seals are leaking coolant in the engine. To fix this you're gonna need a rebuild
@@Drivenbymadness I'll test drive it and red line it after it's properly warmed up to see if it clears up. How much should I redline it?
@@skylerbond56 redlining it wont solve the issue of a bad seal. If the smoke does not go away after a short drive, it's probably that
@@Drivenbymadness So at that point pass it up?
@@skylerbond56 you cn go and check If it has a thick constant white smoke. If it goes away under a couple of minutes, its ok
Thumbnail is RHD?
Looks like a lot of work...
It was 3 days of work :) but i also had to film and do the voiceover, so in reality it's a 10h job :)
Not really , he just made the video like it's a lot of work . The way he talks hahaha ;)
Do the guages always beep on start up?
sadly yes
@@Drivenbymadness can it be disabled? Bought em anyway 🤣
