Mudlarking on the Thames - Unexpected & Unusual gifts from the River both ancient & new(August 2021)

  • The River Thames is a giant liquid story book of treasures both ancient and new. 3000 year old treasures make their way to the surface to be found centuries after they were lost, and modern objects sit on the river bed waiting to be found at low tide! Pilgrim badges or sunglasses. You can never tell what you are going to find from one day to the next. That is what keeps us going back to search the mud. In this video I mudlark at one end of the Thames, and then travel up to opposite end near Putney to meet up with Tobias Neto ‪@Tob2n‬ and Lukasz Orlinski who are mudlarks and metal detectorists. They have both found some wonderful historical treasures.Tobias Neto found a Victoria Cross in the Thames in 2015 and you can find out more about it here and decide for yourself which of the two soldiers could have lost it in the murky depths of the Thames:-
    • Mudlarking with Nic Wh...
Lukasz has found some wonderful pilgrim badges from medieval times as well as a 3000 year old bronze age spearhead.
In this video, we go from one extreme to the other - finding ancient history and modern artefacts. It pays to keep an open mind when you are larking on the Thames.
Please check out Tobias TH-cam channel at ‪@Tob2n‬
You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart and if you would like to treat me to a virtual cup of tea, then my kofi account is here. ko-fi.com/nico...
All donations very gratefully accepted and used to improve my channel - or for a nice cup of tea!
If you would like to book a ticket to the talk I mentioned at the end of the video then the link is here:-

Oh and of course, dont forget that if you would like to try mudlarking the River Thames - you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. Link here :-

Thanks for watching everyone. I love to read your comments and feedback so please keep them coming! Take care, look after yourselves. Sending you love from here in London.

Thank you for watching everyone. Im out this Sunday evening watching my son Angelo playing the main stage in Faversham with his band @collateralrocks so when this video goes live I'll be rocking out there like all good rock mums - so, will come and respond to any comments later on! In the meantime I really hope you enjoy this outing on the River - the second half of which is with Tobias Neto and Lukasz Orlinski. Do go and check out Tobias Neto's TH-cam @tob2n and also, I mention the Totally Thames Festival which is taking place between 1st and 30th September, and you can find out what's going on there at this link, including my talk on Sunday 19th September at Woods Quay in London :- thamesfestivaltrust.org/whats-on/a-mudlarks-feast-4862/ Catch you all later. Love Nicola xx

NO, no, thank you for 40mins of complete bliss, your videos are done in such a way as I feel like I'm right there mudding with you and not 5000 miles away. The music, I presume much of it Angelo's, the shots with the wildlife, how you approach a new find, and your excitement as the stem slowly keeps entering daylight for the first time since the owner threw it (or lost it) into the Thames. And the stories, just awesome!
I hope your son rocks it and everyone has a great time.

Agreed! I don’t understand how anyone can litter anywhere. It’s so irresponsible and I appreciate your efforts to clean up the Thames! I never allowed my children to throw even the tiniest bit of garbage out the car window. Again, thanks Nikola and other mudlarkers for helping and being responsible!!! 🙂🙂

    THE REAL TRESURE
    In the wind
    a child runs
    happily
    along the river
sees the clouds chasing after each other
let's himself go to that feeling
    nothing around him.
    Wanders from that place
until just the smell of grass
    brings him into another world
    and it's a surreal feeling
    possessing all
    and nothing.

I have an interest in edged weapons, seeing that beautiful Bronze Age spear head in such incredible condition was amazing, the technical skills they had over three thousand years ago are a testament to human abilities when you think that was made with the most basic technology; clay, charcoal and knowledge that was passed from master to apprentice.

Crosby Hall is a historic building in London. The Great Hall was built in 1466 and originally known as Crosby Place in Bishopsgate, in the City of London. It was moved in 1910 to its present site in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. It now forms part of a private residence, which in 2021 was renamed Crosby Moran Hall.
    Maybe??

3000 years bronze spear ?! Who made it? Was it imported trade item, captured, brought by merchant visitor , invading army, product of a local culture? Metallurgy? Purpose of Design of loops on blade,?Any others like it? Love how this mudlarking fires curiocity and imagination, from pipe bowls, coins, buttons, fossils, to sunglasses padlocks musket balls typeface to pilgrims , the real people's lives they connect us to... thank you so much...and, the local landscapes foreshores are very relaxing too.

That bone metal clay pipe combo is weird, maybe it was a custom clay pipe holder, one possible theory might be that bone might've been less abrasive to the teeth than the damage of smoking clay pipes all the time? The part Bellarmine face is gorgeous!
So much plastic in the river it's so sad, I pick up and remove what I can when I am out mudlarking but the plastic is worse when there has been bad weather and it has ended up in the Thames.
Loving the sunglasses 😎 and the Dove Type, I have found a few pieces of type on the foreshore would love to find a piece of the Dove Type one day xx

I so enjoy your videos. It makes my Sundays, thank you.
These finds are incredible! Such history which is a favorite thing of mine. Where I grew up I found many British coins that dated from about 16 to 1800's and a lot of other things. This was in New England.
I just watched a repeat of " The Curse of Oak Island" last season, second to the last one and they had found some shards of pottery. The person said that there was a piece of clay pipe in amongst them. I immediately though of you and also the trip that it would have had to make!
Thanks again for all the time and work the you do to bring us these amazing videos! And please, stay safe!

Oh wow. Tobias has such incredible finds. I have never seen the square version of the Thomas Beckett pilgrim's badge. While I am not an expert on pilgrim's badges or ampula I have done some research because I do medieval pewter casting in soap stone and have cast one based on a picture from the British Museum. Making an ampula is definitely on my bucket list but I still have not figured out how to do slush casting yet. Meaning pouring molten pewter into the mold, letting it partially set, then pouring out the still molten pewter while leaving behind the solidified 'rind' closest to the mold.

i have been river walking and found stone balls in river bed the size of a bowling ball nobody seems to now what they are

    • @matthewspencer5086
      @matthewspencer5086 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The earliest cannonballs were made of stone. Partly because there wasn't enough metal available to make expendable munitions out of lead or iron, but also because the back pressure from a heavy metal ball might well be too strong for early cannon. Stone balls _scaled_ the forces to what the metallurgy and construction methods of early cannon could stand. There are other things they could be, though. If they were weights for nets, there would be a hole or a groove so they could be tied on to something.

It strikes me that the tide flats of islands like Man or Jersey (where I guess was found recently a large Celtic hoard of coins) also Guernsey or Anglesey (important to the Celts) or Wight might be good locations for finding interesting ANCIENT historical finds if that is what people want to find. Perhaps these are places that relative to the Thames may have smaller and more concentrated shorelines which we can be absolutely sure were regularly trod and used by Romans, Celts, Vikings, and Medieval people and which maybe were not so heavily overlain by subsequent industrial activity in a major port like London. I hasten to add that the Thames foreshore produces absolutely fascinating relics from all periods and each piece found is very interesting because of what the objects say, whether its a simple Hindu statue or a pilgrim's badge or typeface from an historic press; all are fascinating.

When the world seems mad and not much makes sense we have the lovely muddler Nicola to make us smile with her little treasures, taking us out for an hour or so to test our eyesight and teach us some history. Hugs xxxx

@@anitacarey2389 As a child who grew up on the sea, filling my pockets with stones and crab shells and bits of wood I totally understand her passion. I've said it before Nicola is a cheap date! Give her an old button, a pipe or lead toy and she is a happy bunny. I used to muddle in old dumps and was thrilled with a poison bottle of old jam pot. I love these moments with her on the shore. xoxo

I can imagine that the spear was inside a body, human or animal, that met its end in the river. As the body decomposed, the wood hand came loose and worn away, all that was left was the spearhead in the mud.

The Peter Storm badge used to be on waterproof jackets. I had one as a child ( I am 60) and I still have the badge - but not the jacket!!

Me too, I knew what it was straight away. My Peter Storm badge is blue. I also have a couple of (very non-PC) Robertson’s jam badges in my jewellery box too. Nicola, I once walked along the River Tamar, near Saltash, (near the viaduct south of Burraton Coombe) where naval ships would be moored back in the day. I found a little blue jug with a hole in it and no handle, which still we use as a toothbrush mug 40 years later, and a piece of pottery with Per Mare Per Terram, which was significant as my husband was a Royal Marine at the time.

Peter Storm also made the greatest waterproof sailor's sweaters - oiled wool. to be kept !
