Hi Nicola, On the island foreshore, you found a bottle printed ‘Liquifruita’, a Children’s Tonic or Cough Medicine. In 1945, I was 8/9 years old, and my Mum sent me down to Thornton Heath High Street Chemist, to buy some for my baby Brother. I repeated the word all the way as I was trying not to forget that word. Seeing you pick up the half buried bottle on the island shore took me back 77 years! I remember now , Lying in bed on a Saturday early morning in West Australia. I love your Digs and finds.💗🕊

That sounds pretty right! I thought a pandemonium would also be close too. Whatever it is It’s B………..Y LOUD! Nicola, do you really think that children were ever on the island? Surely not to live there! It was a fort after all. Maybe it was just landfill that had dolls heads and alphabet plates in it. I often roam around the house at 3.00 a.m. too when I can’t sleep. I wondered how you’d ever row out through that square space. Lucky you didn’t knock your heads about in that tunnel. When you went looking for wood, I thought to myself, “No trees, so no wood!” You could have hacked a wee bit of wood from the old pier though, I suppose. Loved that intact, grotesque teapot. Was it Majolica? By the way, did you get my choc cake recipe in last weeks video replies? Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Somewhere in the depths of my synapses, I seem to recall that Macassar was a dressing used by many men. Since it was oily, it ruined a lot of upholstery--so woman made doilies or cloths with lace decoration to hang on the back of a chair and those we called anti-macassars

I find it interesting (as a 21st-century citizen) that where you lark you find different pipes! This only makes sense as the pipe makers were regional and the customers were regional. Simon had a rose and thistle pipe which I haven't seen amongst the pipes pulled from the Thames in London. Today, we buy the same goods here in the US as someone in England or Sweden might buy because the manufacturers sell to the world. This has all sorts of implications. You really can't travel and pick up many things that are unique to that country anymore.

How magical, yet haunting at night was this old fort, candlelit old stones and voices from the past echoing to the present. Nicola, this visit to Fort Darnet must be one of the best film-shoots you have done. Thank you for sharing your experience and those lovely finds with us. ~Wendi 🏵 Ps. I pronounce the sweet "Noo-gah" 😊

Thanks for the video it took me back to when I was a boy. I was born in Gillingham and one summer's day with some friends waded out to the fort from Sharp's Green. I can still remember being surprised at how warm and clear the water was. The tide was coming in on the way back and it was touch and go with the water getting a bit too deep as I wasn't a great swimmer! Thanks again.

As a child in North Kent during the late 1940's and early 1950's we used to eat a lot of Nougat (which we pronounced 'nugget'), perhaps it was one of the sweets which was not on ration. I can also remember driving past a large toffee factory in Maidstone which I presume must have been Sharp's.
I am impressed by the fact that you had your own 'Man Friday' on Fort Darnet, who did your cooking and also paddled you home. 👣😉

Nicola, that was so amazing. I have dreams of Ports and Castles, I can still remember the dreams in parts. I'm loving that tea-pot... I collect vintage glassware, homewares, prints, bottles anything and although it's older than that, it reminds of that era a little, the uglier it is, the more beautiful to me. In Australia, we do have a rich history of course, however the history in Europe, in the UK leaves me breathless. When you find a piece of Bartmann, it's so so exciting. I would be up at 3am and couldn't resist a midnight lark, a moon light lark, a sunrise lark, a snowy lark, a dump-site lark, (a pub lark... ya gotta eat). I'm a mud-loving larker. Keep the videos coming so I can lose myself... in the mud. (I think I've used the words lark and mud enough).
I pronounce it noo-gar. Cheers, Tanya

Nicola, love your videos, always great and you seem to find the most amazing things. We built a new house here in Australia about six years ago and in excavating foundations came across a large pit which was full of bottles or all shapes and forms. The building site had an 1860's house on it - long since demolished. I could not understand why there were so many perfume bottles in the pit, but was told that that back in the day there was no sewerage connection, and the perfume bottles were stored in the toilet to help with smells. Perfume was sprinkled in the Loo after use to help eliminate odours. You probably know this already but I only recently found about the practise - found it fascinating ! Regards, John
