@Golden Eagle He asked his engineers to alter the steering column so in some way his hands would fit better inside the car, as, spoken by him, his hands used to collide with the Williams cockpit every time he turned the steering wheel.

Something was very off about Senna that weekend, even before Barrichello's accident on Friday he'd been warmly greeting people he knew in the paddock as though he hadn't seen them in years. The touching message to Alain Prost over the radio on Friday, the sad confession to Sid Watkins that he simply couldn't walk away no matter what the danger, even the look on his face as he sat in the car on the grid......it's almost as if he somehow knew he wouldn't leave that Grand Prix weekend alive.

No. He braked very hard as soon as the steering wheel broke. So he tried to limit the damage.
However, Senna was a religious man and on that day he had opened the bible at a random spot. The spot he found said something about him meeting God himself. That is spooky too.

I never comment on TH-cam, but as Senna was my childhood hero, I feel like I need to quote something from him. He was aggressive, but he was not crazy and out of touch with reality as some people try to make him. This video tried to use this "argument" too.
"Because I believe in God and have faith in God, it doesn't mean I am immortal. It doesn't mean I am immune, as has been claimed. I am as scared as anyone of getting hurt, especially driving a Formula One car."

Senna was vastly misunderstood and in alot of ways today still is. I prefer to think of him this way.
God wanted to create a race car driver who was as pure a driver as there could be so he made Ayrton Senna and put him in a racing go kart at age 4 then when God needed Ayrton to come home he called him. Some say Senna knew he wasn't going to survive that day because of all the things he did before hand. Again I think He had heard God say..."Ayrton..its time to come home son"...
The proof is only this....there is no one that can do what he did, no one who could truly become 1 with the car like he could and I honestly don't believe there ever will be anyone close....there is your proof. You could not take the best F1 driver from today's or any other age and put him in the cars Senna drove and get even close to the results he could. When he could go out onto the streets of Monaco and be a second and a 1/2 faster than the closest car....and all while driving a manual gearbox car with no aero downforce advantage, and 1200 horsepower under his right foot....case closed.

Prost actually said in a French interview that the weekend before Imola 94, Senna told him personal things he would never reveal to anyone else ever, not even his family. This has actually helped him to get a complete understanding of their relationship and why their rivalry was the way it was. I think Senna knew, even if not consciously. The way he tried to fix his relationship with Prost in his last months was probably also the greatest gift he could give to his greatest rival, an opportunity for them to forgive each other and themselves, a last chance to say goodbye.

Barrichello's accident kicked it off, but it was like so many, looked horrific - but the driver escaped with minor injury. Then came Roland on Saturday, and that was bad enough - but Sunday was a horror all in itself, the death of Ayrton was unthinkable, but there was also the wheel bouncing down the pitlane which injured several mechanics too. The legacy of those three days in Imola will live forever, and also many drivers have been saved since by lessons learned from those events - the shockwaves are still resonating through the sport.

The worst part about Senna's death was the cover up. It was clear something went wrong with the Williams. Tamburello was a fast curve and not a corner. Each and every crash prior to Senna's was the result of a car issue. The steering column failed and this is what caused the accident. What then went on behind the scenes to cover this up is shocking. Williams and the FIA both acted to make sure that the truth was not going to get out. Finally when it did it was too late to prosecute due to Italian law and the time that had passed. Yes Senna asked for the steering column to be adjusted to help him make the car better to drive but the weld on that column was disgraceful. Terrible weekend which could have been prevented but money mean't more than Senna's life.

Jim Clark was the greatest F1 driver of all time. He was Sennas Hero what got Senna into F1. Fangio himself said that Jim was the greatest driver ever even above himself. Out of the 76 Grand Prix he raced in he won 25 of them the other 51 of them he didn't win thanks to mechanical failures that's a 3.04-1 ratio. Senna won 41 of 161 races he started that's roughly a 3.92-1 ratio. Even Shumacher with his 91 race wins still didn't beat clarks ratio Shumacher was a 3.3-1 ratio. Does that mean that he only won with a perfect car? Certainly not! One year at Spa Jims gear box started to let go and wouldn't stay in gear, did he retire the car? Nope he drove one handed around the track the whole race and used his other hand to physically hold the shifter in gear. He did that at Spa in the Wet at over 160mph and still won the race by nearly 5 MINUTES. Unfortunately like Senna he was gone to soon and suffered a similar fate to Senna by dying in his race car.

In 1989 the normally aspirated engines arrived and many thought that Senna would lose some of his amazing speed without turbos. But Ayrton remained supremely fast in all conditions. While going around corners he still refused to take his foot off the gas pedal, a technique he learned as a kid during his karting years.
Ayrton Senna actually believed he had the God-given right to win. His trust in divine intervention helped him to go faster than he normally could have. Being guided by a higher power enhanced his performance beyond what it would have been without religion. His faith made all the difference. Ayrton had an unshakable belief that he was fulfilling God's will.
He prepared himself better than any other driver before, both physically and mentally. He was an innovator in using sport psychology, physical, and mental trainer Nuno Cobra before anyone else in Formula 1. He used techniques to control his breathing and relax when he was becoming over-aroused. These methods allowed him to concentrate at almost superhuman level and get into the zone almost at will during races.
Gerhard Berger: Once he was focused he didn't feel any pain or stress. Nothing. Damon Hill: He talked about a state of mind he got into whereby he was there, but not really driving the car. Prost describes how, after a race at Monaco, Ayrton explains how he monitored his performance during the race itself: He managed to visualize from a 'third person' perspective (i.e. as if watching from outside) during the race and corrected his mistakes.
Ayrton Senna had the qualities to be the best racing driver of his time, and that is exactly what he was. His tombstone simply reads: 'Nothing can separate me from the love of God'

I never thought in a million years that he'd die - Of course it became more apparent after the medical intervention, but BBC cut to the pitlane, so the rescue wasn't shown. They read it out at around 6:00 that he'd suffered "brain death". Sad thing to me is that like so many, I saw him as a villain - there to crush Nigel Mansell's dreams. It wasn't until I was older and read so much about Ayrton that I became a fan, his quotes, the lap in 88 at Monaco - there were so many dimensions to him.

The cause of the accident was known. His steering column broke due to the tremendous vibrations from the rigidity of the car. It was designed for active suspension, but the active suspension was banned for '94, so the car was too stiff and thus had too much vibration. The steering column was lengthened at Senna's request, and the piece they added had been welded in. It was not strong enough to stand the vibrations and that is what broke and he lost the steering on the car.
I've been following F1 since 1977 having attended the US Grand Prix. I've studied many of the former greats like Fangio, Clark, Steward in addition to the modern day and current drivers: Senna was the best. Period.

Not sure if anyone's gonna see this comment after so long, but I feel I have the need to say this:
Ayrton Senna used to race with a Brazil flag in his car, so everytime he wins a race, he used to raise the flag up to honor his country. In that Sunday after Ratzenberger's death, there were a lot of protests from the drivers for the race to be cancelled. The FIA, therefore, confirmed the race because of money, then the drivers went to the race agains their own will. After that Senna said to his agent, who was also close friend:
"Find me an Austrian flag. Today I'm not racing with a Brazilian flag in my car. Find me an Austrian flag cause I'm gonna win this race and I'm gonna raise the Austrian flag to dedicate this victory in honor of Roland Ratzenberger!"
And that's why a furled Austrian flag was found in his car after his death.
This man will *NEVER* be forgotten!
Um grande abraço, do Brazil 💙💚💛

Senna was an amazing driver. My son is proof he hasn’t been forgotten. He is 9 and has been a huge fan since he was 4.

The steering column attached to the Wheel broke in his hands that's why Senna didn't turn his Steering Wheel and crashed head on in to the wall!

Wow Matthew, given that you've never laid eyes on the car that Senna was driving that's a hell of a statement. I wonder, Alan Jones (1980 F1 WDC) was commentating on that race and he noticed the sparks from the right rear of the car almost as if the tyre lost pressure or the suspension broke. A broken steering column doesn't affect the attitude of the car in either it's for/aft tilt nor it's left/right so how do you explain the sparks? If Aryton had braked the nose would have dropped, raising the rear and no sparks would have occurred. He couldn't have accelerated and raised the nose, certainly not enough to have made the car squat at the rear and even if he had it would have sparked on both sides not just the right rear. So, I guess you don't know everything about the accident and what caused it just like the rest of us.

@@01270211136 Congratulations James you are obviously smarter than the whole of Formula One and the Italian legal system because you know what happened on the 1st of May 1994 and they don't. Maybe you should write a book and make a buck out of it. Or you know just bugger off and stop being a know it all douche that no one likes.

@@SomeTH-camGuy Let's all understand each other here, Both arguments are right, due to bad welding, the steering column broke and the suspension shat itself, he ended up in a concrete wall which wasn't suppose to be concrete in the first place, that suspension went flying into his head and his cranium cracked, but there's nothing to be sad about. He died doing what he loved and what he had faith on that God was guiding him.

Everything I’ve ever read or seen of Senna it seems like he was someone who was truly trying to push the sport to be safer. If he was around today, he would be proud to see something like the Halo integrated into F1 I think.
    Senna Forever!
