What I think I appreciate the most is when Jamie punches his dad he’s not happy about it. It didn’t make him feel better. He wants what Sam has with his dad and he’s so broken that he doesn’t. And then that hug… I never not cry with that hug.

    • @ScottRutter

The stride Brett Goldstein uses in that scene - arms spaced away from his body making him seem wider/larger. The silence and direct approach lends a lot of intimidation to the scene which is reflected in what Jamie had to feel in dealing with his father. Then turning it around with brotherly embrace - perfect scene.

One of my most anticipated specific reactions for this show was that Roy hugging Jamie scene, specifically Aaron's reaction to it. When it comes to emotional family-type moments, Aaron has some incredible reactions, and that did not disappoint.

Jamie's dad made it very clear that his behaviour is more than a common occurrence, and that is something Jamie had to endure all of his life. My interpretation is that when he was younger, his only solace was playing good football and looking up to the poster of Roy on his wall. So the hug was something that almost reverted him into a child and the floodgates were open. Great way of writing a character's arc

It definitely brought me back to the S1 finale when Jamie’s dad threw things at him in the locker room for making the extra pass that lead to the goal that won the match. Jaime should have been praised for the assist instead of berated for not trying to make the shot himself.

The fact that Roy was Jaime's idol growing up made this hug feel that much special. Roy was his childhood hero, he has his poster on the wall (season one episode 4).
When he finally met his hero in person as a teammate, Roy was old, washed and not the player anymore, so he was disapointed.

I think the scene with Jamie and his dad is the best scene in the show for me. It also shows that Jamie is trying to be better than his dad as he tried to diffuse the situation in a calm way with words but as soon as he is provoked, in that split second he reverts back to how his dad would act and you can see he hates it and is shocked at his punch. It's insanely good acting from Phil Dunster.

Jamie's reaction was perfect, it was complete disassociaion. The team in shock, realizing what Jamie has been dealing with and why he is the way he is. No one stepping in at 1st to help him was heart breaking, but they were in shock and didn't know what to do and Ted walking away again was devastating but you understand why. Than Roy, they way Jamie flinched when he approached expecting violence, than Roy just holds him tighter. The way he opens his fist and puts a gentle hand on Jamie's back and just let's him breakdown.

It always bothered me that Nate's "confession" wasn't on the same level as everybody else's. It was more along the lines of one of the humble brag answers to old standard interview questions - "What's your greatest weakness?" "I work too hard" - than it was an actual confession of something wrong or deeply personal. Ted had a panic attack during a key moment in a game, Beard coached while compromised, Roy shirked an aspect of his job. Those are things that would hurt their reputations as coaches if it got out. Nate copped to having great ideas and pretending they just came to him instead of him working hard behind the scenes to come up with them?

The whole "brain development" argument feels spurious to me - we treat 21 year olds as adults in basically every way (at least in the UK). Sam is a grown man, end of. As Aaron says, they're not marrying or getting a mortgage together so his supposed inability to fully understand consequences because he's under 25 (ish) is irrelevant.
The _problem_ with Sam and Rebecca is the employer/employee issue, pure and simple (IMO).

a player in the midfield can pass the ball to the wing while a striker is offside (passively), at the same time the winger starts running for the ball and hypothetically crosses the ball into the box for the striker to score a goal. The striker wasn't actively participating in the pass the midfielder made to the wing/winger. He was passively offside in the play leading up to the goal. Once the winger makes the cross into the box, the striker has to be behind the defensive line (as long as the player is not ahead of the last defender, then he's not offside).
It's kind of akin to a lateral pass in american football. Say the person receiving the pass was ahead of the passer but he took a step back to catch the ball. it wasn't an illegal forward pass, but it appeared that way.
In soccer, it's a similar principle. As long as the player receiving the pass is behind the last defender (not including the GK) when the passer kicks the ball, then the player receiving the pass is not offside.

so to explain, if you are on the attacking side, and you have the ball, now u wanna pass it to the Attacker.
cause Attackers, 1, 2 or however many, plays along with opponent defenders, in order to quickly beat them WHEN they receive the ball.
so, when you would pass the Attacker the ball, you need to make sure the Attacker is BEHIND the LAST defender atleast. if, by the moment the ball left your foot, the Attacker which will receive the ball is AHEAD of the last defender, then its offside. cause it would give the attacker unfair advantage, being him closer to the goal than the defender. (ahead and behind, based on a vertical line checked in replays or deemed by the referees)
and to clear WHY 'footballers' cant play on certain area of the field is because the opponent can or cannot play a HIGHER defense line. Your or the opponent defenders(or last man except GK) can create offside traps.
Offside traps are nothing but a defense line playing higher up the field and not allowing opponent's attackers to play close to your goal.
And to trigger the offside trap, the last defender usually runs up when they see the final critical pass is about to be made. better the defender, better the timing he can pull off being behind the attacker when the pass was made. And the last critical pass can be any sort of pass, lob pass, crosses, chip pass, or normal too. hope this helped :P

A football pitch can be between 80m-120m long and 60m-80m wide. So technically it can be a square. The larger the pitch, the more it favors better teams as it's harder to defend. So smaller teams often opt for a narrow field.

5:19 I know that Black-owned barbershops are really important spaces in the Black community and I know that Black hairstyles are a way of expressing one’s identity. In the US, discrimination on the basis of hairstyle is legal because it’s an attribute about yourself you can change, which is fucked. My point is, hair and haircuts are probably significant to Sam and Isaac in a way we whites might not understand.
In the context of the show, it’s a big deal because you can only get one haircut from Isaac per season.

They are compatible & should be allowed to date.

One thing i'm picking up from this on a rewatch is the reaction to Sam being 21 being more visceral than UK viewers/reactors. I know he's Nigerian and only been in the UK a couple of years, but while America has this weird aplit adult hood of not drinking and going out until your 21 in the UK it's 18 and i was running around between pubs underaged vetting served.
He's very mature for his age and would be as a 25 year old to be honest, particularly as a footballer, but in UK we have experienced much more of life before then than yourselves in the states

I agree that they are at very different points in their lives, but I do think there's a big contrast between Sam and Rebecca and Rupert being with younger women.
Rebecca did not groom Sam, they got to know each other organically over the app, and her age and position of power were unknown at that time, whereas Rupert's age and status were up front for his situations. He was also married, which is a huge difference.

And Sam is the one who is eager to pursue the relationship. Rebecca's initial reaction to the idea is really negative. She's not trying to do the really creepy and nasty thing that so many famous and/or rich guys do when they get older of effectively 'trading up' their similar-age partner/wife for a younger model.

What an amazing story arc Jamie this show has. Just wow.
I appreciate Aarons approach to the age difference discussion but there is that unwritten line that just gives you pause when the difference is so vast. It’s a completely different generation between 50 and 21. That’s just too big a difference. But again-kudos to Aaron for not having an issue with them just trying something.

The way I explain offsides in soccer/football to make it as close of an analogy to American football is that the quarterback cannot throw a pass to a receiver who is behind the defense at the time the quarterback lets go of the ball. He can only throw it to someone who is at least even with the last defender. This obviously isn't a 1:1 translation, but I feel like it gets the point across.

Maybe I'm just naturally anti-social, but I prefer more alone time than time with others. Although I do need a balance of both. It took me a looong time to find a girl who is the same way and didn't take it personally. I don't have kids, so I guess I can get away with it...but I find that I enjoy my time together with people more when I've had some time to miss them. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" kinda thing.

At 21 I was making life and death decisions in the military, and any crime I committed I would have been tried as an adult, no questions. So I don't understand the argument about consensual relationships. The part that should be more disturbing here is the *huge* power disparity, which isn't a problem for me, until someone abuses that power, which is all too common with breakups. If the genders were reversed, the power disparity would still be the main issue here.

    Offside rule.
Basically any player cannot be further than the last defender of the opposite team at the moment the ball is given to him by another teammate. Without it, you''d just have one guy at the top waiting for a long ball and that wouls surely be a goal.
Thing with the offiside rule is that right now is very extremist and detailed. so if the tip of your foot is an inch further than the last defender, that's offside, basically your whole body has to be on the same line or before than the last defender at the moment my teammate makes the pass and I have to be faster than the defender in order to catch the pass and have a goal.
Even among football fans is still a topic of debate of how is it understood and how it is being used in a real match, a lot of referees hve been in the eye for declairng something onside or offside.

  • @VinSkully

While there aren't exact standardized field sizes in soccer, most other field measurements are standardized. The size of the goals, the size of the penalty area "18 yard box", and the location of the penalty spot are consistent across all fields. It's just the overall length and width of the field could change by a couple yards. The IFAB laws of the game give a range that the length and width must be, and then each individual competition, such as the Premier League, can further narrow the range that the field dimensions must be. I would compare it to the MLB. All of the stadiums have different outfield dimensions, but the bases, their sizes, and the distance between them are consistent on all fields. Also, across many sports, some fields are grass, and some are different kinds of artificial turf.
As for the passive offside that you were talking about, a player can be in an offside position as long as they aren't involved in the play. Once they become involved in the play, that is when it is an offside offense. A player becomes involved in the play when they pay/touch or attempt to play/touch the ball, or if they interfere with an opponent, impacting on the opponent's ability to play or challenge for the ball. It is only an offside offense if the player in an offside position becomes involved in play when the preceding touch of the ball was from a teammate, or it was a deliberate play of the ball by an opponent.
    Offside Position:
A player is in an offside position if any part of their head, body, or feet is in their opponents half, and if any part of their head, body, or feet is nearer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the 2nd last defender. The reason it's the 2nd last defender is because usually the goalkeeper is considered to be the last defender, and the entire point of the offside rule is to prevent cherry picking/goal hanging. However, there are rare instances where the goalkeeper isn't either of the last 2 defenders.

Calvin is a bit off with the offside rule. A player is in an offside position if: any part of their body is nearer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent, when a teamate plays a pass to them.
