A good start would be to stop building houses on flood plains.

Very simple answer. Build proper flood prevention ditches and. Storm sewers

On it's own that's not going to work. Simplistic. Warmer air holds more moisture so areas that rarely if ever flooded before are now flooding.

@@cliffordparry2862 Dredge rivers and the land downstream floods even faster. The cline of most lowland rivers isn't sufficient to get the water away now the climate has changed, whether one dredges or not. There are no simple answers.

Dredging rivers and stop building on flood plains. Councils in towns could help by keeping drains and gutters clear of fallen leaves. Where I live I know of at least 3 drains full to the grating with silt.

Go back to dredging all the rivers and canals like they used to. They are probably half the depth they should be now due to silt and debris.
Build developments with soakaways and membrane to replace the loss of natural land membrane which holds water.

This report started out so well, but failed to give a more comprehensive intro to managing extreme weather events, including
    - low-impact urban design & development (LIUDD) that incl water manage
    - sustainable drainage systems (SUDS)
    - water-sensitive urban design (WSUD)
    - sponge cities
Applying solutions to the local impacts of climate change requires genuine political will, good governance & local urban development policy, awa community engagement & cooperation. I think this issue deserves further insight and investigation with areas / councils / towns / cities dealing with similar issue innovatively, responsibly & proactively.
There's a global network of communities - aka C40 - that share knowledge & resources related to urban issues & challenges; there's simply no excuse anymore for bad urban planning, development & management. It's estimated that around 80% of people globally will live in cities & towns by 2050 so its imperative that we ensure our urban centres are good places to live, work & play!

How do we stop communities from being devastated by flooding? The answer is we don't and shouldn't, any more than we should stop houses from falling in to the sea due to coastal erosion.
The public purse cannot sustain the vast sums of money it will take to protect a relatively small number of properties, nor are the costs in doing so justfiable.
Homeowners whose houses or businesses whose properties are at risk have a clear choice : to ensure that they have adequate insurance or to move !

    • @timothyhallett3724
      @timothyhallett3724 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I appreciate the honesty, even if it seems rather uncaring, it is a choice made by people and businesses and they need to take out insurance or mitigate their risks … by moving to an alternative location, for example

Block up upland peat drains to enable them to act as a sponge. Stop grants for upland sheep that puddle [seal] the surface of the soil promoting run off, and plant trees on hill slopes and moors to retain water. One can't do so much in lowlands , but then the majority of hill land is unviable for farming without grants: and hills acre for acre get far more rain. Basically pay hill farmers to stop farming [at our expense] and turn uplands into forests, which will also have a positive effect on global warming by tying up carbon.

To any hydraulic/drainage engineer there no such thing as flooding. If we want to water to go away quickly it can be done either by
    (1) increase the slope - that requires dredging the river bed or lay the pipe at a steeper gradient.
    (2) Increase the cross section the water can flow - use a bigger or more drain and again make the river wider and deeper by dredging.
These can be found in any flow formula be it the Darcy-Weisbach equation, Chezy equation, Colebrook-White equation or Hazen-william formula used anywhere in the world.
Personally I don't think the local authority even employs people to unclock the choked drains, that has the accumulated rubbish and silt reducing the flow cross section and the gradient flattened, or has any drainage engineer in the payroll to look at the flooding cause. So go with the environment engineer and accept flooding is due to climate change and live with it.

Building houses buildings and communities in stupid places that is all......Inevitable was always coming and going global periodic acts of nature......REGARDLESS of anything we do use and burn......Just need to look at the land shaping to work that out especially close to current river systems HUGE carvings that were previously made/used by the water and we are building/living well within them on a HUGE % of the human settlements globally.......Won't stand in the way of nature this climate change nonsense is absolutely futile.......One massive periodic volcano emits far more pollution than human activity over YEARS! 2 of the things that do certainly need to be done immediately to compensate for the stupidity of where we have been building strategic straightening out of a lot of the rivers and considerable dredging as for flood defenses that should 100% be made illegal (other than immediately bordering say 1-3m max out with the walls of your actual house as all that does is pass the problem on to someone else downstream in a multiplied effect!

I know. Tbe pump system will have its own built in generators and power lines. The generator ls will only be active when a flood is expected. I know it will take alot of money to run th generators but it most cases it should be cheaper than repairing the damage caused by the flooding

We can make the difference by first better understanding the water cycle and how our diverse management aspects have have been damaging to it.
I cite chemica/mechanical l agriculture in the significant destruction of soil. The same with grazing management
Both of these destroy healthy water infiltration.
Then add the fundamenals of our artificial habitats and societal systems.....

    Fix the drainage.
1/3rd of the Netherlands is under sea level, yet they don't have a flooding problem. Our drainage system has been chronically underfunded for decades, this is the inevitable result.
If the Government had left drainage repairs/upgrades alone instead of trying to _save_ money, we wouldn't now need to _spend_ it all to fix the serious issues that choice left us with.
100% of these floods were directly caused by Government incompetence, penny-pinching and selling off the water companies for a 'profit' that the public now has to pay for.
