Yeah......idahoans have a tendency to drink, so do the folks in Wyoming. Not so sure about Montana or Washington. As for the reactor, you are absolutely right, it was a huge disaster waiting to happen. It could have been way WAY worse.
0:53 this was also an accident because the control rod that was pulled was known for sticking, and if I remember right 1 he pulled the rod 2 inches or so too far. 2 they had to make an improvised gurney to get down the impaled man which they didn't expect him to be attached to the roof via a control rod
Despite all the damage from Chernobyl (which could have been very easily avoided or lessened). It’s become a large ecological hotspot of wild European animals that are typically endangered elsewhere. In addition, three of the four reactors from Chernobyl that did NOT meltdown went on fine and provided power even after the Soviet Union disbanded. Even at its worst, Nuclear accidents are still preferable to something like Deepwater Horizon, or the consistent high danger and damages of coal fuel and the mining for it.
The Windscale fire's effect was greatly reduced because of the filter that was placed on top of the stack. The filter has now been completely removed, leaving behind the chimney barrel which is currently being demolished, similar to its non-contaminated Pile 2 counterpart. It is also worth noting this reactor was not used for power generation. The pile reactors were purely for the production of Plutonium which was extracted via reprocessing liquid chemistry on the same site.
