    Sidious basically had to clean up his own mess. This whole fiasco started with him forcing Dooku to kill Ventress. It's pretty amazing how the story has unfolded.

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain
      @TheGreater-ScopeVillain 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It all worked out for Sidious in the end. I mean, Sidious fully knew that Dooku would 100% try to backstab him if he ever trained a pupil up to a high-enough level, whether it be Ventress, Savage, or Quinlan Vos. And given Ventress's repeated failures, he decided that she probably wasn't an asset worth keeping around if it only served as a reason for his apprentice to betray him. Ventress's rebellion also ultimately gave Palpatine the perfect excuse to wipe out the Nightsisters and Mother Talzin, though as if he ever needed a reason to do so anyway.

    In the Mandalorian they do call Bo-Katan "princess," though it's never mentioned there she's the Duchess Satine's sister, only that she's the heir to Mandalore's throne and the head of Clan Kryze. Now, two of the most important people in Obi-Wan's life have been personally killed by Maul: Qui-Gon and Satine.

    The tragedy of Satine's death is that for such a strong and dynamic woman and leader, she ends reviled by her people, scorned by her family, and used for another's revenge. She goes from the driver of her own story, to a throwaway object in someone else's story. Her death is meaningless in every way possible.
    That is tragedy.

    Easily among the best episodes of the series. Fantastic reaction from you, especially to Satine's death, what a gut punch! Sidious vs Maul and Savage might be my favourite lightsaber duel ever, it flawlessly captures the terror, ferocity and overpowering skill of Palpatine. The operatic music combined with his fluid motions is like watching a malevolent dance.
    What's more chilling is that Palpy is a master of all seven lightsaber styles so he could've ended that fight in two seconds (even faster if he used his preferred weapon, the Force) but was sadistically toying with his opponents as it's likely the most fun he's had in years. An electrifying two episodes, Sith-pun totally intended.

      I also love that Palpatine actually saw Maul as "a rival" - obviously at that time Maul couldn't hope to beat Palpatine but Palps was worried enough that he actually went himself to stop Maul before he could grow more powerful - both shows Palpatine being a terrifying villain and shows the terrifying potential of Maul that's still around when Palpatine doesn't kill him

      While Palpatine is clearly much more powerful then Maul in the force, he is significantly threatened by him as a force in the galaxy with his apprentice, and by his skill with lightsabers, we can see here and via Episode 1 when Maul fights both Kenobi and Qui-gon, that Maul is an incredibly strong sith assassin, particularly with regard to his lightsaber skills.
      He's actually SO threatened, he even brings his backup lightsaber, which we NEVER see him use otherwise. This by itself should make clear how much of a threat Palpatine considered Maul to be.

    Btw, we would have seen what happend with Palpatine and Maul after this arc in the (about) 40 still unfinished episodes (aka 10 arcs) which were cancelled in 2013 by Disney taking over Star Wars. I hope they show us these missing stories (on screen) again some time in the future.
    The further story with Maul and Palpatine is called "Son of Dathomir" and is a comic now, btw. We can also see more of Sidious fighting in that arc which is always cool, imo.

    • @Mis7erSeven
      @Mis7erSeven 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      According to the rule of star wars canon, there can't be two versions of the story. That means, since Son of Dathomir is a (really good) comic, it will never be on a TV screen. Same goes for the dark disciple stories which were turned into a book. But it's fine this way. This show is long enough. If the writers didn't stop focusing on this single project, many other great parts of star wars probably wouldn't exist.

    Maul became quite the planner, he learned his master's teachings well, it's a shame he had to go up against someone of sidious' caliber, the rise of darth maul would have been quite the sight.
    Horrible, but impressive nonetheless.
    Satine's death always breaks my heart, regardless of politics or whatever, she was just truly an amazingly kind person, no wonder Obi of all people fell for her.
    This arc also showed how different maul was to sidious, even in his horrible villany, he truly loved his brother and unlike Dooku and Ventress who just tortured him, he actually trained him, he was progressing so much and showing so much more controlled brutality and skill.
    Edit: Also as a Maul super fanboy, yeah my feelings when I watched that last episode was also "Fuck him" xD

    This might be a painful episode for people to watch, especially those who favoured Satine, but this is exactly the kind of excellant writing that makes a villan not only hated but feared.
    You can dress a villan up in black clothes, have them act as emo and edgy as you like, but until they rip the heart out of your protaganist (and more effectivly your audience) they are not a true villan. This Episode Maul becomes just that, hated and feared... and its glorious.
    Also, given what Maul got up to in 5x16, just how many people were rooting for Darth Sidious in that final fight :)

  • @Sparda_LDK
    @Sparda_LDK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    Love the reaction, although I think we're all crying in the club for Satine 😢. I think what's interesting about Maul is how he hides is inner loathing for himself inside his hatred for Obi-wan. When we meet him in CW his is under a pile of garbage and considers himself "filth" and "nothing". The only thing he has to live for is revenge. But this arc shows that what Maul is looking for is validation. He wants to believe that who he is isn't HIS fault, and that he is a victim of circumstance (via Kenobi and Sidious). Him trying to break Obi is him trying to free himself from his pain, because he believes that if Obi can break, then Maul can finally come to terms with himself by absolving himself from the responsibility of his character. He isn't simply incapable of introspection, he's terrified of it.
    BTW This is not a Maul defense post, nor am I saying Maul wants to be a good guy. It's quite the opposite: he WANTS an excuse to be an evil POS. I will say however, for someone with only a cool design, a good fight and a couple of lines of dialogue in Episode I, CW definitely made him a VERY interesting character.

    • @lex_express
      @lex_express 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      what also makes maul such an interesting villain, for me, is that unlike a lot of sith we see, he forms attachments to others, despite his efforts not to. he puts up a front of his relationship with savage only being that of a master and an apprentice, and yet in savage’s final moments we see that’s clearly not the case.
      and i’m sure there was a bit of truth to maul wanting to return to sidious’ side, he’s visibly upset when he gets reminded that he’s been replaced.
      like you said, for a character that originally only had maybe like 3 lines of dialogue, he’s become a pretty complex character lol

    To be fair even Obi-wan acknowledged that the nightsisters groomed Maul to be a sith and his reaction shows that it hit a nerve. Like with Savage who was literaly tortured and brainwashed into a monster. Tecknically Ventress is at fault for choosing Savage witch then led to Mauls revival so take that. Maul still aint a good dude and Bo-katan was literaly trying to dethrone Satine so that point is moot.

    Season 5 episode 16 is a REALLY sad episode, as we end up loosing two great characters, Satine Kryze and Savage Opress.
    Though it is almost poetic, that after Maul kills Satine in front of Obi-Wan, not long afterwards, Sidious comes and kills Savage in front of Maul.
    Maul got what he deserved, though not the way one would have expected.
    And then there is the whole thing with Savage's final words... God... "I am an unworthy apprentice. I am not like you, I never was." I feel like this almost mirrors what fans probably thought of Savage when he was first introduced. They probably thought "They are trying to replace Maul, but they could never even hope to do so." And Savage's final words hits so hard about this, because he was never going to replace Maul, he never had the chance even to do so. Fans got what they wanted regardless, Maul was brought back anyways, and proved that Savage wasn't even close to strong enough to beat him. Savage was not like Maul, he never was.
    Anyways, Also want to mention that Maul, this being of fear and terror... An cunning and evil character hellbent on revenge, fearless and scary... To see all that crumble into a sense of absolute fear and begging... THAT is powerful, and shows just how powerful Sidious is.
    Sidious came to put Maul in his place, and during the entire battle, he was TOYING with Maul and Savage. Neither one stood a chance. And as a result, Maul gets beaten, thrown and tortured while crawling and begging for mercy as he is as scared as a child. THAT is just so incredibly powerful.
    Regardless though, Great reaction. Yeah, Satine's death is such a heartbreaking one. She was a great character, and it hurts so much to see her go.
    Everything she stood for, broken by evil men who desired power and revenge. So sad. At least Maul got what he deserved, lost his brother at the hands of the ONE THING he feared more than anything.

    Hahahaha!!!! This might be my favorite reaction of the year!
    Bet you never thought you'd be rooting for Sideous to beat some ass, did you?
    Bo Katan Kries will be seen again in season 7 and elsewhere. We'll see more on the Mandelorian civil war- a LOT more.
    And The Darksaber will be seen again too- it's a bad penny.
    She's a complicated character.
    You can see how Bo was the rebel younger sister...and how she embraced Deathwatch to get out of her sister's massive pacifist shadow.
    Can we pour one out for The Twilight?
    Damn, I loved Anakin's old freighter. Sad to see it go.

      @@HunterManProKiller1000 well that and compared to eras were the sih empire was at war with the republic so they had to rely on sabers and their abilities whilst sidious and pleagues hid in the shadows to strike at the right time. But sidious just got vader to do his heavy work while he played on his throne. And then got thrown in a reactor shaft. The sith empire just seems alot better. Their only problem was that the sith had too much infighting and no real tactical minds. A few did but not enough.

    You were asking if Bo ever mentions her sister in the mandalorian; she does indirectly. She introduces herself as Bo Katan Kryze, and says she is the last of her line. The episode is called "the heiress", and it's partly why she wants to lead; if you went by a monarchy system, she'd be next in line. But there's plenty more mandalore stuff between here and the mandalorian, which give more insight.
    So if you know Satine Kryze, and what happens here, then it adds up. But otherwise you wouldn't really notice. Kind of an "if you know, you know" way of referencing Satine.

    Satine is one of the best SW characters ever- smart, funny and utterly resolute in her beliefs.
    Such a strong character - she never begged- never compromised her ideals- never tried to cut a deal like that puppet Olmec.
    I'd love to see those adventures of the year Satine and Obi Wan spent on the run from bounty hunters, back when he was just a Padawan and they were both young.

    When the Chancellor tells Obi Wan two episodes ago not to bother with Maul, he always fully intended to deal with Maul personally. In a perverse way, Maul should be flattered that Sidious called him a rival to his face.
    The next arc closes Season 5 and it too is an emotional rollercoaster.

    When they aren’t being badass warriors, there’s a level of tragedy I appreciate about the Mandalorians. Their warrior ways destroyed their worlds to a point where one faction broke away to try and start a new pacifist society only for their leader to be targeted by a terrorist group that included her own sister. Ultimately that group sided with a vicious Darksider who took over and plunged Mandalore into yet another civil war that paved the way for the culture to be broken and scattered by the time of The Mandalorian

    No spoilers here, just some observations. Observe that after Maul took over the death watch, many of the mandalorians added spikes to their helmet in honor of Maul. Now, go and look at the helmet of The Armorer, the leader of Din D'Jarin's sect on The Mandalorian. Coincidence?

    Highly recommend you at least read a summary of the comic Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir before you start season 7. It was intended to be an arc of the show but the series' cancellation led to it being adapted into a comic, and when the show returned for season 7 as they only had 12 episodes this story was not shown in the series but is still considered canon, so helps fill the holes as to what Palpatine used Maul for

    These two epesodes have two of my best duels in my top 10 list. Maul showing how sith warriors are and sidious showing why he's a sith lord. Plus I said when you saw these their would be tears and shock. And I was right.
    Plus in mauls duel in that one moment. Maul now controls all of mandalore and the crime families which really did make him a threat against sidioius would have more pull and control the more corruption in the galaxy. Plus the neutral systems would make him able to build up an army that could cause much damage.

They killed off major characters as we were aheading to the endgame of season 5 which was supposed to be the last one at that stage. Satine must have been written out as she was not onscreen on Ep. III. then the writers must have cut this emotional connection between Satine and Obi or how else would he able to live his life on Tattoine?

I hope Satine's legacy plays a major role in Mandalorian Season 3 because there's a lot of lessons to be learned from her before their society can be healed. Not tha they'll go back to pacifism, it has it's flaws for sure, but they can learn a lot from her.
