      This and the e965 are by far the best. I'm familiar with the nasal crunch of the SM58, you can hear everything open up with the SR40V, it sounds like a studio condenser. Listening on R70X headphones

      ya that's what I thought too, it fits very well for his voice!
      It seems you really have to test a bunch of mics, and find out which one will fit best :(

      Agreed, although I think that was because it was brighter than the others, which could be not such a good thing in other situations
      I quite liked the earthworks too, although it was a little bass light

    The volume is very different between different mics. This could be due to singing at different volumes, mic sensitivity as well as mic placement which can have a huge impact on the test. I used to own the Sennheiser and sold it and kept the Sm58. In this test I prefer the sennheiser but it sounds much louder which could be due to any of the reasons mentioned. I'm still a big fan of the sm58 and think if the singer was singing a bit more on the mic it would have yielded a much more favorable result.

    • @joseftrojan8663
      @joseftrojan8663 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have now at home 6 different mics and they sound with different volume naturally. First I thought that it is just their impedance difference but then I found that is not. From mics of this video I have Shure Beta 58A and Senheiser E945 and Senheiser E965 and 965 is loudest far away from others. Maybe that is reason why it has -10dB switch. I think, that is better to use strong signal from mic and use less gain than to low mic -10dB and use more gain. Result could be less noise.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My goal with this video was to show mics that people aren't used to, trying to avoid "common" microphones that everyone has heard. (Also, the KSM8 wasn't even around yet when this video was made!) But, yes, I probably should do an update to this video with more of the common mics in comparison.

    • @dannysiacovouguitar
      @dannysiacovouguitar ปีที่แล้ว

      @BallastMedia That would be awesome!!! I'm in the search for a dynamic mic right now. I previously owned a Beta sm58A but now I'm looking for something different. I tried the sennheiser E935 in a store but felt that it didn't really suit my voice. My voice is a bit breathy and warm toward the middle frequencies and also I'm a high baritone meaning that I can hit some of the notes of the tenor too. Any recommendations? I think I'm between the beyerdynamic tgv70 and the se electronics v7 or v7 Myles Kennedy version. 🤔 I would appreciate your input thank you in advance!!!

    The bleed of the acoustic guitar would give you a clue as well. I personally want an upfront sound with extra clarity but with nice bottom. For rock applications the Heil would be great, and the Beyer TD70d would be better all-around.

    Telefunken and earthworks had the best sibilance and air imo. I was pretty underwhelmed by the neumann... which surprised me. If i had to pick any of these (regardless of price) it would defy be the Tele.

    • @surojit13
      @surojit13 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The KMS 105 most certainly DOESN'T sound like this! If you ask me, it was a tired, underwhelming performance, certainly not done as a parallel shoot. The voice was waning, dropping off at places. Can't blame the mic for it. Perhaps hear the 105 out in a different demo, this is not representative...

    • @jasonbodden8816
      @jasonbodden8816 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Beyerdynamic TG-V70d and Neumann KMS 105 work best for this singer's voice to my opinion. The Beyerdynamic TG-V70d is surprisingly sounding full, smooth and detailed. The TG-V70d certainly renders a nicely balanced vocal sound in this test. The popping however is something that should be avoided.

    lots of talk of normalizing. If I normalize the mics with plosives will be way too soft. use your well trained ears to overcome. Also, some people have suggested there is reverb on some mics. nope! that is the mic picking up the room. Off-axis rejection, or lack there of.

    • @djilyaz

      Amazingly useful video here even years on. You're thinking about limiting or compression when you say plosives would be affected though. Normalising doesn't change the dynamic range, it just moves the highest peak to the 0dB mark, removing wasted space if you like; but that wouldn't be useful either. What would be useful is matching the average loudness of one mic sample with all the others... at a level where all pops and plosives were still preserved. Easy enough for the viewer to just use the volume knob though! Thanks for the hard work that went into this!

    I thought the Neumann was the warmest sounding but not enough gain for a band. Also this is the perfect test. I would much rather hear these mics in this situation then a perfect audio situation/ In the real world we don't get to mix audio on the best speakers with the best amps and the best mixing consoles. So this audio format is perfect for demoing mics.

    @TheVigilantStewards 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hard to tell on the Neumann because the performer I guess was getting tired and didn't really go at it, but the 105 sounded pretty good.
    I was surprised by the TG v50d how well that did for his voice, Earthworks SR40V also was nice. The Heil PR35 was interesting.
    also, kind of curious... all the sibilance and plosives and stuff.. maybe he was right up on the mics? Wonder what they would sound like with a few more inches
    Really helpful though, thank you so much for the mic comparison! I was just going to go straight for the Neumann 105 but the Earthworks seemed nice and I was surprised on a couple of the other ones as well
    I'll listen with some different headphones and see if I come up with the same answer. I have a bit of lack of projection and nasal sound similarly to the vocalist, so I'm guessing the right kind of weight and compliment for him would be similar to me

    For the price and quality the Sm58 is a no brainer. Other than that the Nueman, Heil M80,Earthworks, and those others come in as a third choice. But that's just my silly ol' opinion.

  • @tangointhenightband869
    @tangointhenightband869 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So many plosives! This needs to be this guys main concern. Mic technique makes it hard to discern the qualities. I own 58s, beta 58, 87a, Sennheisers, Neumann 105. The best in my opinion in others use is the beta 87a. A mic, several (ignorant) sound engineers unplug and use their basic 58s for. None of their reasons are valid. Except maybe it makes their own mics sound a bit flat. I regret the Neumann because it was so expensive and doesn't sound better than my 87 in the real world. If Lara Fabian chooses the 87 then for me thats also hi ultimate endorsement.

      +Moses Turgeman for him I use the kms105 when wired and ksm9 when wireless. Its not in this test (didn't exist when I did this test) but I've really been enjoying the ksm8 recently as well.

    How do the mics handle high notes? Shrill/light/handles well? Cannot tell from any of these samples.

    Great video, but please, upload a version with a better resolution, 720p, please!

      So, this has been asked numerous times. TH-cam started streaming the same audio bitrate regardless of the video resolution in 2014. Even prior to 2014 the difference in audio bit rate between 480p and 720p was only 128kbps vs. 192kbps.

    Great, thorough demo. But honestly, each mic's portion could have had the time cut in half and it still would have been informative enough.

    • @TheVigilantStewards
      @TheVigilantStewards 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe, but the singer had so much variance in each one it needs that much time to get a good idea of the mic. Like the 105 the first segment was kind of unusable

    Beyerdynamic TG v70d !!!!!!!

  • @JimRockfordFiles
    @JimRockfordFiles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Shure-the Beta58 takes the win. Telefunken-weird and no. Beyerdynamic-TGv70 takes the win, the v90r was pretty weak, which would be the top. Earthworks SR40v is a mic I use weekly, its clarity is unbeatable, its warm and gives you a true sound, but may be too expensive for many. The Heil PR35 was surprising, at $270 it may still be too pricey for the average person. Sennhesier is always a nice brand, but oftentimes you want something different, but at its current price($400), for the person on a budget, this won’t be it. Neumann KMS105 was a surprising let down, one plus, its eq’d with no PLOSIVES, furthermore for $700, its highly likely out of budget. Most churches won’t pay for anything like this unless they are a mega ministry. In America, they will mostly go for a Shure KSM9 or KSM8. My background & recommendation: I have been a performer for over 22 years on various platforms (singing/playing), both large arenas and small churches, and I’d have to recommend the BEYERDYNAMIC TGV70, and at it is currently listed for $169, as I write this review, and available at Amazon and Sweetwater. And I now own the v70. Thanks Ballast for singing us through these, that’s a lot of hard work, hopefully, you get incentives.

    Earthworks much better low end, with lots of detail. The others lack resolution in the low parts, and become boomy. For higher frequencies the kms sounds fine but I think the Earthworks is more natural and overall better for a male singer. Sennheiser is pumped, like an electrified sound. Nice for certain styles. I'll go for the Earthworks because of the detailed resolution at lows and natural highs. If the singer doesn't go low, then the neumann will be ok. But definitely the Earthworks represents better the full spectrum of the voice, just as if you were in front of the singer.

    Plosives are really revealed in these. I had a Heil PR35 and hated it for that reason. I just want to sing, I don't want to worry about keeping a damn mic from popping every time I open my mouth by manipulating my mouth, angle, etc. The Neumann KMS105 does everything I need. Anyone who's ever used this mic knows it has the smoothest, sweetest silky top end of the bunch. That may or may not work for your voice, however, since it has little proximity effect, which some singers work into their sound. I am interested in trying the Sennheiser e965 next.

    gotta be honest. when listening to this...this does NOT represent thoroughly what these mics sound like LIVE...beta 58 sounds like a muddy mess in comparison to a kms 105 live!!! And KMS 105 sounds like thin but clear glass in comparison to the middy force of a 58! The best microphone for the budget probably was not featured: Audio Technica ATM 710

    • @fred0760
      @fred0760 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - the Audio Technica ATM 710 is a beautiful mike in a live situation - solo and vocal ensemble. It's cardioid, but amazingly well controlled - better behaved than many super cardioids and does very nice things to all sorts of singer's voices!!
