    The biggest fact that most people don't know is that Lucille Ball is the only reason the show got on the air. Every other studio turned it down, so she produced it at Desilu.

      Its a fact the original pilot was rejected and by NBC. Gene got a second chance with his "wagon train to the stars" was given the go ahead by Desilu. When the production company board voted to cancel Star Trek because it was too expensive, the owner Lucille Ball overrode them and saved Star Trek from the first attept to cancel the show. She actually saved Star Trek twice.
      Additionally, Desilu by giving gene the go ahead made Star Trek the first syndicated program.

    To clarify: The nerve pinch wasn't entirely improvised. It was cooked up on the set during production, but Nimoy did discuss the idea with the director first, and how bonking Evil Kirk over the head with the butt of his phaser was a bit lowbrow. Ninmoy made a good pitch, the director said, "Okay, we'll try that," and Nimoy gave credit to Shatner for really selling the move. And the rest is history.

    Kate Mulgrew was such a good choice to play Captain Janeway. I don't know if her lines changed when Bujold left the role, but Mulgrew's personality shines through that character. She makes you believe she is a highly competant leader, someone who could unite a fragmented crew, and someone you would trust enough to follow into many dangerous situations. She was the perfect first female (show lead) captain!

    Yes, you missed a couple of things. Did you know that James Doohan was missing his middle finger on his right hand? He lost it in WWII. In the cartoon version of Star Trek, Scotty has all of his fingers on his right hand.
    Another thing that you missed was that the Enterprise was one of 12 star ships in the federation Fleet in the original series. Each star ship had its own insignia on the uniforms of its crew. Later in the movies and other series, Star Trek corporate heads decided to adapt the Enterprise insignia as main insignia of Star Fleet. I grew up with Start Trek so I know these things.

    • @tomkerruish2982
      @tomkerruish2982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Quite true about the insignias; "The Doomsday Machine", "The Ultimate Computer", and "The Omega Glory" are all examples. However, in "Court Martial", Kirk's fellow Academy graduates he meets in the bar are all wearing Enterprise insignias. Oops.

    • @keithj.6266
      @keithj.6266 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are several episodes in TOS where you can see James Doohan is missing the middle finger on his right hand, as well as a scene in Star Trek III and a scene in Star Trek V. There may be others but I cannot think of them right off the bat.
      Also quite true on the insignias. Just as in the Navy, aircraft carrier squadrons have unique patches, as do Air Force squadrons. (I'm a Navy veteran and also did JROTC in High School.) I am not familiar with Marines, Army or Coast Guard so I cannot offer any insight on them. It wasn't until TNG that Startleet used the TOS Enterprise insignia. As it was explained to me back when the TNG was originally airing (I do not recall exactly what year, sorry) this was done to pay homage to how successful the Enterprises original five year mission was. Or so I was told.
      Finally the last piece of trivia is in TOS the Enterprise was part of the United Earth Space Probe Agency as well as Star Service, Spacefleet Command and Space Central were all used before they settled on Starfleet, Starfleet Command and the United Federation of Planets which we've all come to know and love.

    "The Menagerie" is probably the best example I can think of for inspired cost cutting. You have to remember that, while *we* know that it was really a bottle episode, and basically a clip-show recycled from the original pilot "The Cage"...the audience in 1966 would have no way to know that, because The Cage was the rejected original pilot that *never* aired. From the point of view of its contemporary audience, "The Menagerie" would have actually appeared to be an *exorbitantly* expensive two part episode featuring, apparently, multiple versions of sets, multiple version of costumes and props, and a very large cast of guest characters, complete with an alternate interpretation of Spock by Leonard Nimoy...all seemingly done just for these episodes!
    As always, my hat is off to The Great Bird of the Galaxy for not letting a great original pilot go to waste!

    Dax character - notice she is almost ALWAYS filmed sitting down? She is nearly never seen standing straight on with another character.
    I met her at her house proabably 15 years ago, purely by chance, and I was astonished how tall she is. I am 6'0, and felt like she was taller than me. A quick Google search says she's 6'0 as well, but man, she seemed a good 1-2" taller for some reason!
    After that encounter, I could not ever "not" notice that the camera angle, or her positioning, always makes her look at good 2-3" shorter than she really is.

    Actually, Patrick Stewart was advised by his agent at the time that it was destined to fail for this reason. He went into it after being in Shakespearean theatre for many years and was excited at the prospect of doing something new, but a little apprehensive of being away from home for 6 years. His agent told him it would be lucky to last a year and advised him to enjoy himself while he was in the States, make some money, get a tan and go home after the show was cancelled. Roddenberry didn't come up with the idea for 'The Menagerie'. Associate Producer Bob Justman did, because the show had run out of scripts to shoot at that point. John D. F. Black wrote the first draft of the framing story, which was then extensively rewritten by Roddenberry, to the point that Roddenberry didn't feel the need to credit Black. It was another nail in the coffin of the relationship between Black and Roddenberry.

    Plus, it's evident that Kate Mulgrew developed Janeway's biting wit. I'm thinking of a scene in "The Q and the Grey":
    Q - "Is it because of his tattoo?" [Referring to Chakotay] "Well, mine's bigger!" [As Q turns his head to reveal half his face in tattoo]

    There was some controversy as to the reason Bujold didn't wind up with the part. Though a reason was offered that she wasn't happy with the schedule, whyt was she was the only one with this problem? If you compare the performance of Mulgrew vs Bujold, Mulgrew is passionate and warm, where Bujold came across as cold and aloof. I remember a statement from one of the producers that they felt they wanted to take the character in a different direction. The schedule thing was probably done to save face for the seasoned actress so as not to put a black mark on her record.

    • @jb888888888
      @jb888888888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I recall that the entertainment news was all over Bujold "walking off" the set after a mere three days, doesn't sound like anyone was helping her save face to me. As to why she was the only one with the problem? Because she was a fairly well-known film actress who was being forced to adjust to the schedule of tv, whereas just about everyone else were either relative unknowns happy for their big break or else tv veterans who understood the system.

    Which Star Trek character was indirectly created by John Wayne?
    Answer: Pavel Chekov. George Takei was filming the John Wayne movie The Green Berets when series 2 of Star Trek was starting production. So the character Chekov was created as Helmsman until Takei returned. It also resulted in the creation of the dual helm positions that became a standard Star Fleet design.

    The Vulcan nerve pinch is real, though it's somewhat different in real life. The person receiving the pinch doesn't slowly fall unconscious. He suddenly drops straight down to his knees fully conscious, though in pain. That spot is one of many pressure points throughout the body. To mention another, if you give someone a spear-hand thrust to the brachial plexus (in the pit of the shoulder), it'll paralyze his arm for a minute or longer.

    David has said that he was not aware of Flat Cats when he wrote TTWT. Rather, he and RAH were both inspired by the same source: a newsreal showing a population explosion of rabbits in Australia. The sea of furry creatures covering the landscape and obliterating crops is impressive and ominous and makes a lasting impression. In fact, the Tribbles story is more in parallel to the newsreal, in that they are eating all the human's food.

    Genevieve Bujold (the film actress who almost played Janeway) actually wanted to walk out much earlier after learning what the filming schedule was like-- from TNG cast member interviews, the cast can be expected to work over 12 hours a day, 5 days a week-- longer if you're using heavy prosthetics like Klingons or Ferengi. But she was contractually obligated to do _some_ filming, so she did the bare minimum to get out of the contract as efficiently as possible. Those few scenes that are accessible online feel wooden and dispassionate mainly because Bujold was exhausted from the long hours.

Case in point, toward the end of Hawking's life, they perfected his type-talking technology to the point where he could control it simply by quivering his cheek slightly, which was about all the mobility he had left. There should be lists of technology that appeared on Star Trek that has since become real and real technology that exists now that makes Star Trek seem dated.

      The goal of story telling is to tell a story to YOUR audience not to get all the real world details right. When writing and filming for a 1960s audience they needed to design things in a way that audience would understand and accept so that meant doing things that looks silly in retrospect. TOS was a. TV show to be consumed by the average person of the time, not an exercise in futurology, I try to remember that when watching old media and it makes things much more enjoyable.

    During the promotion of the first season of TNG, Sir Patrick Steward was in the UK and was watching the BBC when Red Dwarf (the original british version, damn the American remake is one of the worst remakes I've ever seen) was being airred. Whilst dialling, he stopped once he realised the laughter he could hear was his own and has been a big fan of Red Dwarf since.

    I will always take issue with Burnham performing the Vulcan neck pinch. Because, it is physically impossible to pull off unless you have the superhuman strength of a Vulcan, or an android like Data.
    Vulcans have physical strength that is several times that of a human being. From what I have heard, they are stronger than those who compete in Strongman Competitions.
    A Vulcan neck pinch probably hits your nerve with the force of a 10 pound sledgehammer, swinging like you are trying to break concrete.
    So, any human pulling it off is something that should be reserved for parody shows like Spaceballs.
