I love dinosaurs. I always have, and I've been trying to make them come to life for as long as I can remember. I started with pencils and plasticine when I was a kid and have since moved onto clay and animation as an adult. Dinosaurs inspired me to be creative from a very young age and that never went away.
My Dinosauria Series is a lot more than just a series of animated short films. I've been treating it like a gigantic artistic and educational adventure. The animated short films might be the end result but I've been doing so much more work than just that. I've been doing research, drawings, and even sculptures for these animations. This video covers my creative process and ideas behind the art and themes of "Old Buck", the first film in my Dinosauria Series.
    Hope you all enjoy! :D

The fact that this series doesn’t have a definite narrative structure and isn’t overly romanticized/cartoonish makes it all the better. The result is a more realistic, raw, unrefined and intimate feeling. It’s just a slice of their life but the audience feels connected to it

You say it's too dramatized? Honey, this is the perfect story-telling animation for dinosaurs that many of us have been begging to have. So what the dinosaurs have human-like emotions? This is an animated story with no dialogue, it needs to have story-telling drama to tell the story for everyone to understand and enjoy.
Thank you so much for this amazing work of art. I will be watching this series for years to come and show my future kids too.

As if animals don't know fear, anger, agitation, hunger, lust, etc. More than enough studies have shown herd animals to be very aware and predators even more so.
I also take umbrage with what he said about the violence: This is a fight for mating rights; it's going to be violent! Has he never seen Lions go at it? How about deer, rhino, elephants?

However, I think the anthropomorphism is a positive. It's still a short film, afterall, and some level of anthropomorphism is going to be required if you want to tell a compelling narrative.

I have noticed you seemed to enjoy putting the subject on a hill with a single tree. Don't be hard on yourself as far as artistic quality or the scientific accuracy you get the point across very nicely with speculative biology and behavior. It is not hard to imagine animals like this living in a herd structure having a hierarchy and there is a dominance when it comes to breeding. We can relate to that because nature repeats itself, especially with species that live in herds

This was an apsolute blast to listen to David. Love seen artists go though and explain their creative process in their projects like this one.
The first cocept you had is an intresting one for sure, but I can undertand why you decided to drop it. And the outcome of that choice giving birth to Dinosauria was a pretty good one. Not only did you get to make something simpler and wasnt as hard to do,and I have to say the result looks fantastic from what I've seen in the first episode and the little bits the trailer showed of the other 4.
I also have to say huge applause on the research you did with the animals in this,I've seen alot of other projects where this isnt done and it ends up been the same generic JP clones while here were you tried to go for more accurate depictions of the animals and even giving them little refrences to actual specimens and paleontology is simply a joy to see, cause we havent gotten any good modern depictions of dinosaurus in media for a long time and your films while as you said there not documentaries there still among the best modern dinosaurs in media we have and many share a similar opinion.
On a sidenote I think the reason your ceratopsian figures have those crocodilian like scales on their undersides might be cause we have skin impresions of Triceratops with those kinds of scales on their underside. This diogram shows it well: file:///C:/Users/telecomsystems/Desktop/refrences/dinosaurus/Ornithiscians/ceratopsians/Anatomy/E3Sd9srWYAQgbFK.jpg
Looking forward to seen the rest of the 4 films in this incredible little series and what may follow it.

Sir, Mr Dead Sound, I genuinely adore all of your animations but I without a doubt feel Dinosauria is gonna be my favorite. I've been watching your videos for a while, I don't remember which was the first video of yours that I've watched. But it's been such a treat watching you improve and getting to hear about your creative process. I enjoy your creative story telling and how you seem to focus on a more, show don't tell type of story telling. I honestly can't wait to see the next installment of this series, and the subsequent ones that follow. Because being honest? Dinosaurs are so cool and you do them justice.

  • @Primordial_Soup

Genuinely, the amount of detail and care you put into this is beyond fantastic. While there are known unknowns and unknown unknowns when it comes to any science (especially paleontology), the finished product is a marvel of depicting our modern understanding of dinosaurs: the variable morphs of the Styracosaurs (one of my all time favorites btw), plausible behaviors (even if such fights are unknowns), and beyond all the scarring (which even most paleoart misses). The work you're doing is great (always has been) and I can't wait to see what's next!

I personally think the finished product is incredible. I don't see how it's too heavily dramatized, as there are territorial/dominance battles like this in the wild that are this violent (and documentaries like to ramp up the intensity of these battles further). Plus the humanization is just enough to get a picture of what the animals are thinking, while still keeping it subtle and not over the top. Finally, there's the fact you explicitly took out the one thing that we would have tied closest to ourselves; mercy. As stated in "Mother of Nature"; "she can be fine, and balanced, even kind. But never fair."

Dude as far I'm concerned that short was a masterpiece, the animation, the colors and the atmosphere, which in my opinion is the most important part of any piece of media, were outstanding. It felt like watching an old episode of walking with dinosaurs, and trust me recapturing the magic that made us fall in love with these animals isn't easy. I just loved how you recreated nature and life at it's finest, violent and brutal but at same time beautiful, and if this is the weakest one I can't wait to see the others specially now that I've seen the care and love that you've put into this one. Anyways congrats brother.

what I love the most about Old Buck is how much it feels kinda like a samurai film- the way old buck lowers his broken horn to the challenge feels so much like an old warrior, katana in hand, staring down a fight which he may well not win but feels compelled to because it's the right thing to do- all very anthropomorphic and romantic but I still love it, brutal as it is. the tree looking like a sakura tree kinda lends itself to that too as well as the limited palate. Sometimes you just need to see dinosaurs fight!
