Your philosophy at wizard academy has seriously jeopardized my view of everything. Thought, I'm starting a food truck and I'm terrified and it's before I'm ready for sure. But the fact that there's a whole group of people out there, that will build the airplane after lunches has settled me in a dramatic way
Sure, you can do it badly, but this isn't just a hobby. You are involving others and their money, which is why we need standards. That's why it's worth doing well, so you don't deceive others and your self. Do you ever give refunds at the wizard academy,? Does Lochlea guarantee their product? It's just selfish ambition if you think about it. You should fund your pet project some other way and not drag everyone down.
This might be controversial, but I like this format more the previous one. I loved the old one obviously, and I don't think it was bad, but it's been a couple of years now that I have stopped watching vault videos and now I am enjoying them again. I enjoyed the banter and personality based content in previous ones, but I love hearing these stories, these conversations over a glass of whiskey we a friend is making me discover.
Now I get the Wizard Academy way of working. Completely agree with that process. Too many wait too long to start because they fear being ill prepared and never realize their goal for fear of failure. Great topic to go with a nice "young " Scotch!
I was sad initially at the separation of two people who I have come to love over the years as family, but I am very happy to discover that I love the product, insight and wisdom of the new format. Well done you Magnificent Bastards!!
A friend recommended you to me and I thought I was going to learn some great Whisky info and little did I know that I was getting a business/life lesson with some great Whisky info and "Nerd" stuff thrown in. I immediately realized that my amazing wife is an "artist" and a business genius whereas I'm a perfectionist. Thankfully...as a great spouse will do...she's breaking me out of the perfectionist prison and getting me to just launch. Can't wait to go through the rest of your content as my first "taste" was truly satisfying. Cheers.
As a small business co owner of a niche craft coffee company my background is logistics. I find a lot of people who never begin something never make it past the planning/research stage. One of the biggest things I've learned from logistics is don't make such detailed plans; create frameworks that can flex. Then when it all hits the fan you've probably got half a plan already together ready to go fix the issue.
Thought I was going to miss the Daniel/Rex combo on these (and I do a little), but I'm loving the chill relaxed conversation vibe and whisk(e)y nerd story time! On another note, Lochlea is exciting and I was fortunate enough to attend a tasting in Minneapolis of Lochlea's current core range led by John Campbell himself. I wasn't sure what to expect from the relative young age of the whiskies but having John's fingerprints on them and I'll say I was very pleasantly surprised at the flavors they've been able to pull from 3yr old scotch. My advice, you see a bottle, you grab it and be sure to follow the progression of this distillery through the years as their stock ages. Sublime whiskies that will continue to find their shape and by releasing 3yr old versions you get to experience the progression as well. I believe John said the rough goal was to release some 6 to 7yr olds when able, but that it really depends on the whiskies/casks and what they are telling him. Cheers Daniel, I'm glad you're here too.
I am really enjoying this new format highlighting. It is not just about whiskey, but life lessons in general. Well done Daniel. This new approach suits you. Thanks for sharing.
I love this style of video, relaxing yet so informative, thank you. Also, super excited to see what Lochlea produce going forward, John Campbell is incredible and I fully believe he’ll do an amazing job there, cheers! 🔥
I am a simple man who doesn't cope with change very well, I normally need to get my head to line up with curves in the road. That being said, while I do miss the Daniel and Rex I came into this viewing relationship with, I am happy to see you both doing the things you love. Here's to fighting, stealing, and drinking. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. Be happy and at peace.
When I was a ski instructor in college, the instructor who taught us how to be both better instructors and better skiers took away our "fall jar" to which e had to contribute if we fell, because he felt that we couldn't take the risks needed to learn new skills.
Sorry guys, just not getting into this new format. The old banter between Daniel and Rex was entertaining, but what I came for really was the whisky reviews: smelling and tasting notes, recommendations, learning more about whisky.
Everything you said in this video (aside from the whisky portion lol) I can relate to directly. I started a whole new career path this year, and only sorta knew what I was getting into. But I'm figuring it out along the way. Thanks for another great vid, Daniel!
Daniel, can you talk about the stuff around you in the room. What books, what is the painting, what is the display off your right elbow, the 'wands' in the beer glass, and so on.
I feel like this philosophy is completely supported by agile methodology. Anything worth doing, is worth risking failure. Failure is a stepping stone on the path to success. If your goals are lofty, it takes a lot of stepping stones to climb to higher goals. This is also why you make lower goals on your way to higher goals so that you can achieve some measure of success on the way to your ultimate success.
I'm not a fan of change in any respect. You are helping me see the positives of transition. I love your new format and am learning to embrace new avenues. Cheers Daniel
Yes! This is huge for a neurodivergent brain. Fear paralysis leads to procrastination leads to stress and bigger tasks with shorter deadlines and we're screwed. Lol. Just start. Get something out of your head and into the world. Then mold it twist it rework it until it makes you happy. I also often cite the 4 stages of competence. Unconscious incompetence (not knowing what you don't know), conscious incompetence (knowing but sucking), conscious competence (functional but not great), and unconscious competence (mastery/not having to think to do the thing). The second stage is where many give up, because we know what mastery looks like and it feels so far away.
I think I heard this summed up a bit differently once, but the message was still the same. The fist time will always be the hardest thing to do, but every time after that you will be able to add the things you learned the first time.
Thank you so much Daniel! I needed to hear this, perfect timing! I'm about to start my own business and was just wondering about the first steps. Thank you for the inspiration and the review as well! I haven't tried Lochlea yet but I do have two bottles of the Kingsbarns - another new Lowland distillery. If you can ever get your hands on the Dream to Dram or the Docoot from KB you won't be disappointed! Cheers to you Good Sir and have a wonderful week 🥃🥃
I really like your new videa series. You are an intelligent man with wisdom to share and I think this style of content works great. Well done. You mentioned offering suggestions for topics in one of your other videos. Could you do a video, maybe you already have, on how to refine one's palate? I've heard wine people say they lay out bowls of dark cherries or tobacco or whatever and then they take a sniff and then try to pick that scent/taste in the wine. Is there a similar exercise for whisky drinkers? Thanks
Dammit man, your message strikes a major chord with me again! Someone I know putting you up to this?!? 😂 Seriously digging the new direction for the channel, even though I thought I might not.
3:39 That seems pretty dark for being just three years old. I'm curious to know if they're doing anything unusual in aging the whiskey. I'd also like to know whether there is, anywhere, an actual standard definition of "craft (distillery)." People use the term, but as far as I can make out, it mostly means "This distillery isn't as big as Jack Daniel's so I'm gonna look down on it." 9:24 You sound, here, kind of like Gen. George S. Patton Jr. 🙂 He said that a good plan executed now is better than the perfect plan next week.
First and foremost, like many others, I really like this format; this presentation. It has a quieter, more comfortable feel. It's more intimate. I mean, who doesn't like to sit down and listen to a good story? And Daniel, you're a good story-teller. Now, on a completely different note, is it just me, or does Daniel look a bit elven? What I mean by that is, there is something the angle that makes Daniel's ears appear pointy at times. I'm not saying that's bad, because with the beard and the earrings, he kind gives off, if I may, elven wizard vibes. Idk...again, probably just me. Anyway, cheers!
Chesterton is awesome. I did some searches and found these: “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.” - G.K. Chesterton, from _What's wrong with the world_ "...these things we want a man to do for himself, even if he does them badly.” and "the most terribly important things must be left to ordinary men themselves - the mating of the sexes, the rearing of the young, the laws of the state.” - Chesterton, from Orthodoxy
No the Whiskey side came around because he kept finding bottles of Whiskey all over campus because the founder doesn’t like whiskey but would get given bottles as gifts. So when Daniel would find them and need out about them they decided to start the whiskey school.
I believe that anything worth doing is only worth doing well giving 100% and anything not worth doing well isn't worth doing at all. However Daniel is not wrong too. What I mean is this: it takes effort to do a thing right, well, wrong, or badly. It takes no effort to not do a thing. In order to do a thing right or well one will screw it up a lot and may do it wrong 600 ways before doing it right once and well thereafter. Knowing that 99% of things do not hit on the thing the first time the question to ask is, is doing this thing worth the effort to do it well? If yes, it is worth doing, if no, you are better to find a thing that is worth 100% of your effort.
Top gear used to call that ambitious but rubbish. They'de have grand plans on what they wanted to do, and tried to yo make them work, but it would often fail.
Hi (not sure if I can call my self magnificent even tho I've been a Patreon for a while now) so just a bastard here 😂 I'm not sure yet if I like the new format of whisky vault or not I mean I love the stories... I love telling stories I love hearing 'em but but I feel like the change is just too drastic for me now since it's so sudden... I was used to the old format and coming home after a very long days of work (I work as a cook (I don't like the word chef science that is a title that you have to earn and there is only one in every kitchen...) )After like 15 hour days I was used to come home to those light episodes of 2 dudes kinda talking about whisky... As I've said I love the new format but not for the same situation.. just not in between two days if work. Just wanted you to have some feedback
nope.. Vault and Tribe had to split for IRS reasons... Vault is non-profit... Tribe is a business... together it blurred the lines... and IRS was breathing heavily in excitement
I'm torn about this new format, I can't just put it on in the back ground and come in now and then and keep up. Your stories and actual tasting notes require more attention to the vlog. I guess that's good!!??😁

Your magnificent breasts blend are award winning and I can't wait to open my bottles. I look forward to Irene's blends. Will you still be able to taste non-released stuff from Crowded Barrel?
Are you planning to perhaps talk about whisky in the whisky vault more? - I must admit this seems more like an advert for the wizard business academy, which I’m sure is very good … perhaps this channel should focus more on discussing whisky and whisky tasting and history etc Not absolutely loving this new format yet
I by no means wish to detract from the videos, or from Daniel, I'm honestly enjoying the stories as much as one idiot on the internet who isn't into business can. But Rex left so this channel wouldn't be mistaken for an advert for the distillery, and it for sure doesn't, Now it feels like I'm watching a long form ad for the academy instead. I guess maybe that's what this is? I see a lot of people real happy about it in the comments, so I must be a minority voice.

love this video. It is so true. One instructor told me you are not good at something until you get good at something. You have to train and learn,

Oh Boy - Love the new format. You are on to something magnificent. :) Always respect your opinion, and expertise!
I am really enjoying this new format highlighting. It is not just about whiskey, but life lessons in general. Well done Daniel. This new approach suits you. Thanks for sharing.
I'm sup to be working, but just killed over an hour binging these vids 🤪
You have to do what you have to do , I am enjoying learning more about the Wizard Academy. Damn the IRS !
Longer is better ... Thank you for your kind words and wisdom
I love this style of video, relaxing yet so informative, thank you. Also, super excited to see what Lochlea produce going forward, John Campbell is incredible and I fully believe he’ll do an amazing job there, cheers! 🔥
Great episode once again. Thank you, Daniel!
Came for the whisky review.... but left thinking more about the WA philosophy. Thanks, Daniel.
Still love the new stuff. Miss the old stuff- doesn’t mean there isn’t room for change.
I am a simple man who doesn't cope with change very well, I normally need to get my head to line up with curves in the road. Interesting point of view. Thanks for sharing
This episode meant a lot to me. Thank you
A very good point. Something i need to remember
I am absolutely loving this new format!
Far side complete collection in the corner, brilliant
My favorite video so far! Thank you so much 😊

I'm a therapist who tries to teach my client these ideas. And Lochlea has some lovely whisky for its age (I live in England and have had it).
Cheers to you too Daniel
That’s a great message! That said, I want my plane fully built and assembled before it takes off. 😂😂. But I get what you’re saying!
Thanks for the video 🥃
I am really enjoying the new format all thought I do miss Rex
Daniel, can you talk about the stuff around you in the room. What books, what is the painting, what is the display off your right elbow, the 'wands' in the beer glass, and so on.
Nice job balancing out the whiskey review and storytime
Just the message I needed to hear today.

Want to start a TH-cam channel. Thank you for the pep talk. Love the new content.
I think I heard this summed up a bit differently once, but the message was still the same.

I may do another video, but it's all covered in the smelling whisky video. th-cam.com/video/AP81AUBgiuk/w-d-xo.html
Great video

Can you please review Chivas Regal Ultis?
This is a small change to a G.K. Chesterton quote. One of my favorites. it is from Orthodoxy
Chesterton is awesome.
I did some searches and found these:
“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.” - G.K. Chesterton, from _What's wrong with the world_
"...these things we want a man to do for himself, even if he does them badly.” and "the most terribly important things must be left to ordinary men themselves - the mating of the sexes, the rearing of the young, the laws of the state.” - Chesterton, from Orthodoxy
"Business people are artists" good thing you amended that to entrepreneurs cause I would have buildings full of empty suits as counter arguments.
While Lochlea might not be happy with that title, it is also an artful paring of story topic with whiskey release.
Love everything you guys do! Just one minor thing, it’s pronounced Lochli not Loch Lea. Keep up the good work
ok. what is the artist and title of the painting on ur wall
I thought that said "Anything worth doing is worth doing BALDly" I thought that was your new catch phrase! LOL
Also true
Danial son,Okinawan goju ryu practitioner!
I have to ask, it's driving me crazy. Is that a jar of wands, behind your right shoulder, next to the painting?
It is :-) as student sent them in as a joke, and we kept them.
Ohhhh "Wizards Academy" ahahaha
Insert PDQ Bach's "Unbegun Symphony" here.
Wow.
Gotta know name of painting and artist in the videos...please
I miss Rex for sure
Before you got to wizard academy we're they teaching anything whiskey related?
No the Whiskey side came around because he kept finding bottles of Whiskey all over campus because the founder doesn’t like whiskey but would get given bottles as gifts. So when Daniel would find them and need out about them they decided to start the whiskey school.
No, I introduced whiskey to the campus and then built with the whiskey school because it was something I was passionate about
I believe that anything worth doing is only worth doing well giving 100% and anything not worth doing well isn't worth doing at all. However Daniel is not wrong too. Hey Daniel, any plans to do an advent calendar review this year?
In his q&a he confirmed they are too busy this year. Sad I know
Not this year, but maybe next!
😁
So true do the damn thing.

This ain’t workin’ guys.
What are those weird faces on the desk... lol
It’s from an artist in Portland, who made faces for every primary emotion
Still no official announcement on Rex. This is now a kick in the teeth for the whisky tribe as Weare supposed to be straight with each other. You guys claimed to be open and honest. But still no acknowledgement of our questions about Rex. Feels very MGP vibes. Secrets
It was all dealt with over on Whiskey Tribe, check there.
What have they done that is not open or honest? What are the questions about Rex?
Watch the whiskey tribe episode for November 11
