Hearing this I want to go to the Whiskey Marketing School. I have no justifiable reason to do so for my career or otherwise, but the appeal to join a community like this is strong.
It's well worth it. And besides, you never really know where your career/life will take you. I was an attorney when I went to Somm level 1. Since then, I'm still practicing law, but I'm consulting with bars and distilleries, teaching classes and leading whiskey tastings, and working at a distillery making Bourbon. The community is always there and supportive despite all of us being from so many different walks of life.
I don’t think I’m a whisky shepherd or guru… I’m more of a Whisky Buddha… you know… a fat bald dude that likes whisky and ponders the mystery of phenols and how the best angle of the lyne arm may solve the world’s problems while listening to Jethro Tull until 3 am
I was taught in a similar fashion in culinary school. We where told to always be training our replacement, to share our knowledge with everyone willing to learn. I love the thought of a shepherd. I’ve been eyeing a bottle of that Yellowstone single malt for months, I think you may have talked me into finally pulling the trigger on it.
Learning anything new is beneficial if you have the time and inclination to do so. Never a waste of time, especially if the learning comes from folks who know what their talking about. It's all good!
Culture is everything but it's also something that you have to always work on. I love the idea that it's not how long you have been part of the community its how you treat each other that matters. Thx Daniel!
I love this! Reminds me of something I read in a book somewhere. “It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant”. If only everyone operated that way. Ready to serve here! Whisk(e)y Shepherd Fortmeyer, Level Two.
Can confirm on the high emotional factor hosting. It is a wonderful way to give back to the school and help encourage the new somms, even if it's making some laughs or breaking a glass ;)
The somm community is amazing. Serving is very important and I think quite the passion for most of us in the somm community. Also either my bottle is bad or I just don't like large scale American single. I love craft American single malt but every huge distillery single malt I have tried was not for me. No idea why but so far that has been my experience. Cheers
The idea of being inclusive coupled with service is the key to success in life. The fact that you have channeled that concept into your school is truly wonderful. Imagine how grand life would be if we all strive to be shepherds in our chosen path in life. Thanks Daniel for another inspiring story. Cheers.
Hosts are great. Especially their first time so Daniel can tease em for being nervous. But in all seriousness the hosts are wonderful and share their knowledge and time freely. I am very interested in the ewa at wizard academy next month is gonna turn out with hosts and such.
I Love this story, it makes me want to go to the Whiskey Marketing School! I love the approach you are trying to teach Daniel! I’ve visited the distillery a few months back for a quick bottle pick up and let me tell you the property was beautiful, as I was just merely looking and sight seeing I was welcomed by a Fellow Bastard and was asked if I wanted to join them to walk around the property where the distillery and the vault side was, and I gladly joined, even tho I was shy and a little star struck just being there he made me feel welcomed into the community! I’m really bad with names so I already forgot his name once I left 😂
After a commercial for Yellowstone I picked up a bottle of their bourbon. Didn't really care for it, too young and burny for me. It did make for a good old fashioned though :) Huh, wow. I REALLY love the idea of having previous students come back to serve. That is really neat and great on multiple levels. Well done. Hey um Rex, "writingk" ;)
I’m going through the “tower updates” from the wizard academy TH-cam channel, and I’m thinking a lot of them would make great topics for the new story driven format here. Looks like there’s lots of cool stuff with interesting and meaningful stories.
I swear this is so damn awesome.. Wish there was such a concept of a program in Romania, cuz yeah, our concept of community is kinda shot to pieces by our lovely history with Communism. I'ts not about the money, its not about anything else, kist kinda wish the idea of a community seen as this interpretation would pop up in my area of interest in my own country.
Hey Daniel! Question for you and the Vaulters: I really like your approach to talk and educate audience about whisky, so I wanna find something similar about rum - could you pls suggest some YT channels or sites about rum?
@@ManateeOnRye I'll get around to those eventually. At this point, I've tried Yellowstone, Stranahan's, and am currently working on a bottle of Old Line

Interesting! Because I have interest in whiskey all my life but am not a drinker. But the science behind it interests me.
What up everyone?
My 24 year experience with Wizard Academy has always been, “jump, and the net will appear.”
Go there for the same reason I did... INSANE weather, HUGE bugs... but an amazing learning experience because of the people and the whisky.

This is very similar to how our Project Based Learning school works. The seniors and juniors mentor and serve the freshmen and sophomores. So cool.

The cerebral side of Whiskey/Life you provide is very nice to watch I love watching reviews and blinds, but this is refreshing.
I absolutely love these discussions. I always get something out of them.

Even being “bastarded” at crowded barrel is a ceremony of sorts. Creating strong emotional bonds is certainly a skill and can be taught. ❤
Excellent topic!
Thank you!
I can hear Roy Williams in this so strongly- with a Whittington twist, of course. (Frank)
Love the inclusion priority. Great video and impressive story. Really appreciate the ethos of your school!

Love the idea of the previous graduates serving the new students. More like a monastery and less like a university.
