I would imagine that the price should be an important consideration in this particular head to head. Hultafors - $96 US, and the Granfors Bruks - $299 US.
In sweden There is not much difference in price, I got my GB for about $100 in 2014 and The Hultafors ran about $80-90 last year. GB must have a good marketing in the US if they can ramp up the price like that. Thanks for the comment
No, they stopped adding a metal wedge in late years since they use pneumatic hammer to assemble the handle and wooden wedge, so there is no need for a metal wedge. I have a Scandinavian forest axe for 4 years and it doesn't have the metal wedge and the head is still rock solid after everything I have done with it (felling, delimbing, splitting, general bushcraft, etc.) So no worries mate. 🙂
I'd take the Hultafors, its a little bit heavier so you get a bit more cut and since it has a square poll it is more useful as a hammer. the round poll on the Gränsfors is kinda a specialized, I'm not skinning alot of deer with it, so I don't need it. but there is a video of a guy skinning a deer with it on youtube so if you want to then that is the best one
I'd go with a GB Scandinavian axe or the hultafors small forest axe for general purposes. Though they lean to slightly different strengths depending on what you want

doesn't the Hultafors have very clear markings on it that you shouldn't use the pole for hammer work? is the pole hardened? I saw on another review that the GB pole is not hardened. Makes sense considering these are hunting axes and you would only want to use the pole for skinning.

Both nice axes but the Hultafors is the better axe in my opinion, slightly more versatile and much less expensive. The ONLY advantage of the Gransfors that I can see is if someone actually uses their axe for skinning large game, it has a little better profile on the rear for that, but the Hults Bruk will still skin fine and costs half the price. Gransfors are WAY over priced, same with Wetterlings which they own
I don't hunt. But I have extensive use from both of these axes. I have owned the "small woodsman axe" from Gränsfors Bruk and used it for about 8 years. My dad owns the Gränsfors hunting axe used in the video and have used it for over probably 20 years. From my very subjective opinion the GB axes are superior. Mostly beacuse the handle has a better shape with less agressive curvature, it's much more comfortable to use. I have put many hours into it and it's the only one that still feelt good after a couple of hours chopping. I think the thinner head also has a better shape when working with wood and is easier to swing than the cruder head on the Hultafors. And the shape of the head just works so good. If you're not treating the axe properly and does more survival type stuff maybe a cheaper axe might suit you better but otherwise I can't recommend Gränsfors enough. Little details like how the end of the handle has a more defined knob so you have orient your hands more accurate, it's just a masterpiece in my opinion.

The comparison should really be between the Hultafors Hunting Axe (Ekelund) and the Gransfors Small Forest Axe, they're much more comparable in terms of dimensions, price and use-case. The HF is a small-medium axe, the GB is a hatchet.
Say Heah Humble, What's the point. I have both, the S. F. A. and the 17" Agdor Range, The steel is similar so both hold about the same edge retention. But my Agdor has a nice kick for it's size because I think it's a 1/4 lbs. heavier than my longer S. F. A. Also I think my H. B. splits a little better where the G. B. fells a little better. For what I like to do in my put of doors playpen. I carry my H. B. as my bush craft axe because it's compact with a kick. Yeah, I process wood for fire , Naturally the longer hft has better leverage felling, But I take it easy and carry a saw also so I like the splitting more to my adventage. Oh, don't get me wrong, On cold weather trips, I take all the advantage I can get, including a longer handle. But in real cold weather, I even go with a 2 lbs head and a 24" handle. But if a few of us go, I even use my 19", 2 1/2 lbs. head I had it made compact and it's my House Axe by Iktis Oxheas, It's a 5" edge very thin but WoW Wee does it split. or we take my 2.9 lbs head abd 27" handle Ochencopf Axe. I also use 2Hawks and Rstwings, Yeah, I wish you would of split instead of chopping at the same spot.,,.

both of these nice quality axes are what i consider to be overpriced & mass produced? a scout abouts a rural car boot sale or swap meet can come up with some real previously used authentic old axe design gems!!! for less than 7euros sometimes minus the shaft but often with? a hand forged axe head by a master forger is also another way to go? but your still looking at over $220+ !! just for the designer forged head i prefer the swap meet approach as i wasnt too impressed by the price point on either axe and i honestly think you can aquire the hultafors or a feelalike lookalike hultafors type axe for £7 from any nordic army surplus store which carries the standard 3 crown stamped swedish army axe!! this axe is also a good all around gen purpose axe for a smidgin of the hultafors axe which as i believe is vastly overpriced for a massed produced forged head that costs peanuts to make? the so called lesser known axes are often as good as in some cases better than either of these two well known examples some of the ones ive come across are independently forged are hundreds of years old and have no named maker some have rural forge stamps or well known nationally reknowned maker stamps on blade but at a considerably far far lower costs pricepoint than either of these two mass produced high quality axes!! they are i believe trading up on their well known name? the actual price does not reflect the costs of making it it is being marketed to hell because they have a following largely generated by the larger american mkts!! europeans now also have to pay more for it a hultafors or bruks than before? when you see a well made object for good value or prices do not tell the manufacturers because all they then ever seem to do is just up the kudos by trading on their name and upping the price? many axes equal too or even better than the hultafors or bruk do exist but they are obtained from far humbler suppliers!!!

Sorry Dave, nowhere near the quality or functionality of these two axes. They more than justify their price point. The Swedes make the best axes in the world by a mile.
Unfortunately this tool is rendered obsolete with the invention of the modern folding saw. Silky bigboy2000 and a large survival knife will weigh the same as a small Axe and will do many more tasks faster and more efficiently. IMO will also be safer to operate. Ian Jarrett correct! But you can cut down trees and logs to size, splitting can be done with your large survival knife in a battoning fashion. All an all a lot safer and energy conserving. Again, I love axes for what they represent and the inherent bad-ass-ery they possess. 🤘🤘🤘
not really, a good axe can be used for chopping,splitting,carving and the backside can even be used a s a hammer, not to mention folding saws struggle with bigger thicker trees and batoning is more tiring with a big survival knife not to mention neither a saw or a knife can be used as a hammer.

Ive never seen the GB small forest axe anywhere in the US for $300. Ive only seen it at $190-$200 which is still WAY too much

so yanks & uk are all being ripped off!!!

next minute im surrounded by crs police douanes plain clothes special branch detectives who actually stuck up for me told the terminal manager the arab that his staff were the ones who were defenitely out of order!!
he didnt like it made the douanes search my bags and delay me long enough to miss my train then ordered crs to eject me from his euro terminal stn!!
of cse the douanes didnt particularly give a damn about my knives
as theyd been already declared allowed onto train by uk police
but this lil rats arse of a arab term manager wanted my head as his trophy on his office wall for placing 2 of his staff bang down flat on their arses!
kept calling me he is a very dangerous man arrest him arrest him

Sorry Dave, nowhere near the quality or functionality of these two axes. They more than justify their price point. The Swedes make the best axes in the world by a mile.
hultafors is better. BG is overpriced.
Unfortunately this tool is rendered obsolete with the invention of the modern folding saw.
Silky bigboy2000 and a large survival knife will weigh the same as a small Axe and will do many more tasks faster and more efficiently.
IMO will also be safer to operate.
I have mine around as collector items of times gone by...😩

Bullshit. You cant split wood with a folding saw or carve or make firesticks with it.

But you can cut down trees and logs to size, splitting can be done with your large survival knife in a battoning fashion.
All an all a lot safer and energy conserving.
Again, I love axes for what they represent and the inherent bad-ass-ery they possess. 🤘🤘🤘
not really, a good axe can be used for chopping,splitting,carving and the backside can even be used a s a hammer, not to mention folding saws struggle with bigger thicker trees and batoning is more tiring with a big survival knife not to mention neither a saw or a knife can be used as a hammer.
