    When he talked about not being adept at soldering and melting the switch, I couldn’t help but think(hey, that’s me) lol!

    You're a life saver I got a switch like this to attach to a actuator and even with the wiring diagram I was lost.

    Great Resouce. I use OTRATTW rocker switches which appear to be different although similar even with the winch switch. The switch is their V8D2UXXB. I can send a picture of their wiring diagram to assist in answering my queries.

      they are in all honesty going to be about the same they all follow a similar wiring schematic to keep production costs down its only going to get weird if there are 7+ posts if you have a continuity setting on your multi meter its pretty easy find the power in on the switch click the switch to the position you want to know the power out and listen for the beep as you touch posts if it beeps in the on position and not in the off position that's your power out post

    Which is the top and which is the bottom of the switch? I couldn't tell where you were hooking up the wires, maybe you can number the pins and let us know which number pin gets what wire, ya know? Just saying. I've watched it a couple of times and I just can't tell what is what. Appreciate you taking the time to upload a video though, thanks.

    Great video! Nice to see how an old video from 2 years ago is the answer to my prayers!! Been looking all over for this layout and couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks for the detailed video and demo. How would I wire a dual function light bar with down being amber only and up being both amber & spot on while using 2 single leg harnesses to each function?

    • @ryancline3025
      @ryancline3025 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also do these switches typically have backlighting in addition to lighting up switch position when engaged?

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ryancline3025 yes you can set them to several positions it depends on where you feed the LED post from jump it from the on position the led will be on only when the switch is on jump from the off the led will only be on when the switch is off feed it from the ACC it will be on when the acc is on and feed from the battery it will be on 24/7 dont feed it at all and you have no led sorry I missed this question before

    I seen your vid trying to find a way to split a input to a Jackery power station to have a switch to have solar input and reg 12v power input switchable from a switch instead of pulling out one cable and putting in another. I hope this makes sense. Lol. Essentially 2 individual inputs that are switchable between each other. I’m hoping for a solution for this. I’m not sure if it’s even possible. I can provide pics for more clarity in what I’m trying to do if you need.

    Outstanding video

  • @caseyfuller5136

    The video is good and helpful. But you are showing how to use a winch switch as a lighting switch and also how to use it to only light (led switch lights) when a button is pressed. Is there a way to set this switch up in a way that both switch lights are on with running lights. I haven't tried wiring this yet but plan to here soon.

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      how is a light different than a winch? its not its a 12v load :) the switch does not care if its a light or a winch relay if you can wire a light you can wire a winch the only difference is what's at the very end of the wire :) not being pissy lol Im just saying its not overly complicated light, winch, fan, pump the switch does not care it sends 12v down the line and shuts 12v off after what that 12v feeds is not really important

    How to wiring 7pin DPDT with two separate DC sources??

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  ปีที่แล้ว

      as long as its a DPDT switch its possible you just run a seperate power source to each of the input poles instead of jumping them. thats the Double part in a Double post Double throw switch (DPDT) :) thank you for watching

    Good video. However, my original winch rocker switch has three wires and the new rocker switch has four. What do you do? Thanks!

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      without knowing the exact switch Id say that the 4th wire is for the LED light in the switch and thus not needed to work but if you want the light on the switch you have to hook it up if you connect it to the power into the switch it will be on when the switch has power If you connect it to the power out to the load it will be on only when the switch is turned on

    Can you show what wires actually go to the winch and where to connect them. This was very informative but I need to know how to make the winch work!

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I said you will most likely need to use the switch to power relays closer to the winch as most winches use more power than Id feel comfortable running through any switch it will be the positive wire that leads out of the switch on the in and out position you then hook those to the trigger wire on your relay. sorry I missed this question before

      Please explain the “bridging” of the wires. The red and the two whites

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you use a short jumper wire to connect the two posts rather than have a single wire coming off each post and connecting them into the same wire later on down the line. you do not have to bridge them, you could bring a pigtail off each one but you would use more wire and have more wires going into the junction further along. doing it this way is just neater closer to the switch so if there is an issue with a connection you're more likely to find the problem at the switch than have to troubleshoot under the dash

    I bought the same switch for a linear actuator. I wired it exactly as you describe, but there is no movement of the actuator in either direction. The switch light works though. I changed the switch out with a 4 post rocker switch and the actuator works fine! Any suggestions?

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry I missed this sounds like you have power going to the light but not the switch through was it hooked up to the ignition or a relay?

  • @Manuel_Z_Kayaks
    @Manuel_Z_Kayaks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I watched the whole video because I want to use the same switch on a linear actuator.
    The actuator only has 2 wires.
    I need the switch to simply reverse the polarity

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can do it yo just need to cross over (from what Ive read) it seems most dpdt switches will do a google image search for wire switch reverse polarity it pops right up

    My 5 year old has the same problem. HOLD STILL!!!! You created a wiring video yet you can't seem to hold still long enough to see any of the wiring!!!!

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      have your 5 year old wire it up :) or set the video to 1/2 speed some of my geriatric viewers find that easier :) thanks for the feedback I try to please everyone but just cannot. if its too slow people do not watch in todays fast paced internet life. so I go faster and figure people can pause rewind etc if they need too but no one fast forwards they move onto the next one

    Good video but when you are plugging in the wires you are going too fast. I can’t tell where they go.

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry about that, trying to find a balance between too long and effective has been difficult, I did include pictures at the end that tell you which posts the wires connect too Ill work on being more clear. thank you for the feed back :)

  • @Vladgore007
    @Vladgore007 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yea, you did it the VERY basic way... make one that widow / winch / roof can go in out/up down/ open close by changing polarity on switch "ie neg becomes pos and pos becomes neg to change direction of motor rotation... I had to sit with multimeter draw bunch of sketches and got it right first time, and that is why these switches exist, so polarity can be changed and not simply wired up as on off toggle... make vid on that, and more people can make use of this feature. Else I will just post a vid myself 💭🤷🏻 "and yes, a Lumeno winch / roof up down / window up down switches are the same, but that wiring is way more tricky than what you chose to demo ie only switches lights on and off... yet there are other switches that do this jyst fine, but non of them can change polarity as i mentioned...

    What size wire did you use?

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sometimes for tutorials I will use a smaller gauge but in the real world I prefer 16 or 18 gauge for most low power applications like switches etc bigger for the main power wires on relays both in and out. most of these switches really do not have a ton flowing through them if wired correctly so you can get away with small gauge wire , you really should not be running every light or load off a single switch without a relay anyway think Macgyver not Tim Allen lol

      KootenayBoy DIY thanks. I have 16, just making sure I wasn’t using to small for this application. And I also agree, using shrink over tape any day of the week. So much easier and cleaner. Thanks for the great video.

      sorry its hard to please everyone if its too slow people move on so I go faster as people can rewind or pause but no one really plays the vids on a faster setting you have to fit the info in in a short period of time

    Absolutely NOTHING to do with wiring up a "winch"!

    • @kootenayboy
      @kootenayboy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ahh you must be one of those guys that just holds the wires together every time you want to spool in or out. the rest of us use switches and this vid is intended for people who can grasp the concept and see that its exactly what you need to operate a winch. if you can not see that I humbly suggest hiring someone DIY is not for you :) thanks for the feedback :)
