As a former 4 year old who played this game at 9 PM on an August night, I can confirm that the PTSD is real. I'm in my mid-20's now but hearing the music along with the silent background sfx + depressing tone really plays with my emotions.

I was 11 when I first got a Playstation in 1997. Abe's Oddysee was one of the games me and a friend played in the early days of having the console. It wasn't a smash like the Tomb Raider series or Gran Turismo but my god, it was drenched in creativity and originality. These FMV sequences were beautifully animated for the time and scared the hell out of me as a kid. The games made in the period 96-99 were some of the best ever for me. Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, the list goes on. All game changing titles that started new series that are in many cases still going to this day. Fantastic time to be involved in what surely must be regarded as one of the golden eras of gaming.
And I happen to imagine Abe with a Liverpool accent and sounding exactly like Wakko Warner from Animaniacs. Furthermore, Molluck sounds exactly like Thaddeus Plotz in my mind.
One of my favorite childhood games, oh how fond I am of this game even to this day. This game was a masterpiece. It plays with light and dark so well; amazing level design. The Scrabs and Paramites legitimately spook me out and running from them made my heart race as a kid. Would love to see an HD remake of this.
This all becomes about 50 times as impressive if it's held up to the cg cutscenes of other games around its time, like Heart of Darkness and wasn't produced by some obscenely rich studio either. Compare the game's $4 million budget (14 if you add marketing) to the $30 million Toy Story got. And it still bloody well holds up today.
Yeah yeah wooooooooosh. Fucking asshole man. When I worked for wal-mart they scheduled me over at or over 40 hours a week for 2 years straight. This was the first game I played with a clear moral heart from the outset. Brilliant storytelling, fantastic visual design (the sligs, the scrabs, the paramites) and fun and humorous gameplay. This game achieved so much
The ironic part is that... the paramites and scrabs are in the same position that abes people now find themselves in. Not a moment before being on the chopping block, was he looking greedily at them as nothing but food. The greater irony being that the world we live in puts us in a similar position, as our lives are eaten up by industry and consumerism.
are you sure about that? Look at the way they process meat, it sits near rusty metal. And I've never seen anyone wash their hands or take showers. No sanitary equipment like gloves, boots etc. Some of them wash the floors but that's about it. But for some reason they do sound tasty. Better than the real life chickens that sit in shit all day long and never move. inbred endlessly.
This game is a masterpiece, even to this day. Brilliant atmosphere, artwork, message and gameplay. Such a great allegory to our capitalist nightmare we live in.
"We made some good Scrab Cakes too." If that doesn't immediately reinforce Lorne's intentions for Abe and his design, Oddworld is not the franchise for you.
I recently bought a PS1 & made sure I had this game for my daughter because this was by far my favourite platform game on the PS1. Abe says "The truth, it turned out, would blow my mind" Now I know that they must tell us what they do as it's part of their T&Cs. So they were dropping this onto the children in the 90's.
The creative director directly states that this game is commentary about unfettered capitalism. Stop projecting your fundamentalist worldview onto things that have nothing to do with it.
