This really IS funny, but God, I wish there was more to it--i.e., to hear Geddy or the other guys talk in greater length about the song and what it meant to them. One of my all-time favorite Rush tracks...a real jewel in their crown.
Exactly! A beautiful folk sounding tune that highlighted Geddy's wonderful voice an Alex's beautiful guitar playing. Many musicians were putting out ballads like this at the time. But how many of them on that same album also had incredible rocking songs like Best I Can, Anthem, and By-Tor? There are only a few that did it that well.

I am surprised to hear that. Honestly, there are maybe three Rush songs that just make my skin crawl, and Rivendell is one of them. I just can't. Another commenter criticized Tai Shan, and I actually like that one, although I know the band didn't much care for it and a lot of fans don't either. Not a top ten favorite Rush tune, but I thought the song construction there and Alex's guitar work especially were notable. No matter. There are enough Rush songs out there that there's something for just about everyone!
I was the guy who asked the question that lead to this......I wish I'd have thought to have my wife record it so I'd have proof. I swear, I nearly had a heart attack standing there talking to the boys. Nice seats BTW :-)
I mean....Geddy jokes but that's a quality in and of itself. It's all good to get someone dozing off halfway through a song if that 's what you planned the song's intention to be. They were of course just eager, hyper youth at the time so everything really had to be up and at em, and Rivendell was more to prove some sort of intellectualism they were also trying to prove at the time with Anthem and By-Tor and the Snow Dog.
I asked a question to! I was the one who asked about if they would ever do another 10+ minute song like 2112 or Hemispheres. I swear I couldn't even speak I was so nervous!

@Theigo Rodriguez Meyer~When they were recording "Rivendell", they would fall asleep by the end of the recording sessions because, the song is so mellow... Geddy said someone would have fallen asleep by the end of the song....Terry Brown (producer) would ask the guys how the take was, and someone of the band would be asleep, lol....
Rush was most successful when they were a hard rock band. 2112 put them on the map and opened the door to subsequent albums. when they changed their sound, they made a huge mistake and lost their audience.

me too its one of my favourite rush songs and its SO underrated but it is a very relaxing song

????That is one of their WORST songs, second only to TAI SHAN. They did'nt write many stinkers, but those two songs do.

That's one thing i love about these guys - they're genuine, no phoniness about them at all.

Cool, I was there that night. I recorded the entire audio on my iPhone. I can't believe it's been 4 years already.
After side one, I fall asleep to that track too. But “in the end” wakes me back up.

They said Clockwork Angels originally was just a really long song. But if they would ever do something like 2112 or Xanadu again.. you never know
