    Battlesphere was in development when the jag was still around, but got canceled and was eventually completed by the original team, who released it when Hasbro announced the jag as an open console.
    Really great video, always enjoy these comparisons.

    The reason Doom is so dark on the Jaguar is actually because of problems converting color palletes from PC colorspace to Jaguar. Also worth noting the 32X versions is a direct port of the Jaguar version even though it was released first.

      Really? I read it uses the CRY color space very well to create smooth shadings.

      @@atarijaguarsgarage8873 yes it does but original textures were in RGB color space and in the conversion to CRY, they ended up darker. The use of CRY itself is decent.

    The Jaguar was priced right, but lacked system-selling games. The 32x also lacked games, but it had an extremely short lifespan due to bad Sega's policies. If both consoles had more time in the market, we would've seen some interesting games pushing the hardware to its limit.

    • @johnjay6370
      @johnjay6370 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think only ONE game pushed the hardware and that was Virtual Fighter for the 32X. I remember reading a artical saying the 32X could not handle Virtual Fighter... What a bunch of BS... The 32x versions i think is better than the Saturn version...It is smooth as butter..

    I loooooooooooove T-MEK. The fact that the 32X version is the only console version is a reason to own a 32X for me. It’s more of a Twisted Metal game than a Battlezone game, though - Hoverstrike is Battlezone 3000 and it is a totally different playstyle. I like them both a lot.

    Shadow Squadron is a lot more similar to Battlesphere than Star Wars is. Both are awesome games and some of the best games on their respective systems. Star Wars Arcade is a rail shooter, which the Jag had none of.

  • @Odolwa2

    32x was a very capable system. Sadly, we're only NOW seeing what it can do. DOOM Resurrection, OpenLaura, and a few other projects are showing that we could have had some immersive games (especially DOOM done right) very early on. Jaguar was probably just as capable, I don't doubt OpenLaura can also run on it since it runs on the GBA. Game developers were probably in short supply at that time. We had plenty of 16 bit games, but even PC wasn't really into "heavy" 3D games back then (system shock and DOOM were the most notable, otherwise there were just a handful of actual fun 3D games on DOS). SEGA Rally was as good as it got, and that was an arcade game, otherwise I think most people looking back on these old 3D capable systems were expecting American McGee's Alice type 3D (or at least N64 type 3D), that type of 3D simply wasn't a thing yet..

      Probably better if they had ditched the extra SH2 and release the 32x with a single CPU at a lower price tag, IMHO. Then give it more proper support and delay a year the release of the Saturn, until it could get a single SH3 CPU with a better GPU, that would've been a PSX killer.

    • @johnjay6370
      @johnjay6370 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sovo1212 I disagree, the 2 SH2 design was to get developers familiar to the Saturn, in fact it was a early Saturn Design. What Sega should have done is just release the SVP chip as a standalone cartage and it would require no extra power supply or cables. It would use the SVP like the knuckles game. Games would be released that can lock on to the SVP cart and use its DSP for simple 3d games and other effects. That could have came out a year earlier and been a stop gap for the Saturn. The SVP chip would not have addressed the color limitations of the Sega Genesis, but for simple 3d like VR and VF, it does not matter. They could have even released a really good version of Wolf 3d and maybe a Doom version like the SNES. It would have only cost about $50 bucks for the stand alone cart or they could have just added the lock on to the Virtual Racing cart. Anyways it is always fun talking this and how things should have been... Great post!!!

    As one of the few people who both owned AND loved my 32X-CD "Tower of Power," I have to give it to the Jaguar for hardware. It was simply the most powerful console at the time and, had it been released as a Jaguar CD, would've given the PlayStation and even the Saturn a hard time in the console wars. Nevertheless, too many games were rushed or done by novices, and the hardware contained bugs and was difficult to develop for. If only Atari had released an upgraded console version of the Lynx in 1990, they'd have had a 16-bit competitor with some serious 3D graphics capabilities, at least letting them compete on the low end. And they'd be starting with a library of 74 games to a system that could do decent arcade ports.

    Your preference aside, I was suprised how much better the Jag version of Primal Rage actually is: higher color depht (look at the diphtering in the 32x version!), nicer details, animations are smoother and it runs way better. So a clear win for the Jag in my book. The CD argument does not count, as Battlesphere is even rarer than the CD Addon(except you buy a repro or play it on GD). But PR can also be played on GD.;-)

      I know what your saying, but I prefer the JAG version because of Full Screen and all the sprite Sides. Meaning you will see all sides of the monsters not just them facing you. The Jag and 32X version had design timeline limitations, it is just how development goes... Both systems are very close in total power.

      @@johnjay6370 I can see you point of view too. They are both compromised, but I would rather have the 32X limitations than no music at all.

      I don't like the music and the Jaguar Doom is way better were it counts: graphics, performance and gameplay. ;-) The Doom music on the 32x sounds awful, it's one of the worst versions of the OST. So I prefer silence!
      Another thing is that modern horror games like Dead Space only play music in specific moments, while mostly using ambient sounds and noises to create an unsettling atmosphere. That is why Doom on the Jaguar has some special and unique appeal to me, sometimes less is more and AvP did that too!

    You’re obviously playing BC racers on an emulator because it doesn’t run that fast or smooth on 32X at all. You can’t review it honestly on emulation

      The picture looked worse when I recorded it from the 32x. The av cables made the image way to soft. The Sega CD version is my favorite.

    Lmao ok dude. 32x is far better. VF VR MK2 alone make it better than Jaguar. Not to mention tempo, knuckles chaotix, and its a chaeper system to own and buy for.

    For me the Jag wins here on NBA Jam, Hoverstrike and Atari Kart, the rest I would give to the 32X.

      Doom, Primal Rage and Battlesphere are also clear wins for me.

      Music in NBA Jam Jaguar is kinda weird and creepy. It’s not great in the 32X but it makes for a more normal NBA Jam experience. Both are great, though.

      BC Racers should have been good. The Sega CD game was maybe a little better than the 32X remake even though it looked a lot worse. I don’t think Core’s heart was in it.
