Had the same awful experience at the ferry to bus transfer. This was the 7th time I’ve done this, and absolutely the worst organization of all the years. I think they subcontracted out the job this time to a bus company who was completely unprepared. There were 10x the number of volunteers pointing you towards the buses, but no one helping organize it. In the past there were many more volunteers and people making sure buses pulled up correctly, orderly, helping people get on quickly. The NYC Marathon is one, if not the most, expensive marathons, you can’t charge that money and then drop the ball like this. I feel bad for anyone who traveled and had this experience or was just one and done-ing it. NYRR really needs to formally apologize for this, and make it clear that it won’t be like this again.
I wanted to pin this simply so people are aware that this was a one off mistake, and hopefully it is corrected in the years to come. Some simple fixes really would change how it went. A line, clear bus entrance points with them not pulling up all over the place. They manage to set up the entire city for success, and I think they will learn that this issue was a mistake they need to fix. I do agree, Mat, they need to apologize to build some confidence in the ferry next year as the word spreads about the issues of 2022. Otherwise they are going to have 40k people trying to take the midtown bus next time around.
@@ChristianRunsNY Christian, I enjoy your videos. Thank you. I really appreciate that you gracefully talked about the bus problem. Without taking away from the overall incredible experience, runners need to communicate the problem so it will get fixed. This was my third time around and it had never been longer than a 40-minute wait in the past. This time it was 2.5 hours. The last hour was in the sun, people were getting pretty testy, and there was some intense jostling. Like many, I missed two start waves and still had to scramble to get in the corral. I suspect part of the problem is that they did not have a bag drop in the village this year. In the past, the earlier bag drop deadline required many to arrive earlier, and that may have spread out the demand for the busses. It was also clear that the system for loading busses and bringing them in was terribly inefficient and chaotic. Perhaps we should all take a few minutes to write a polite but direct letter and physically mail it in. It is an enormous task to pull off this marathon, but this part of the day has to be better.
@@DanielKellogg I’d sign! It was brutal standing that long there. Thanks for the kind words and the bag drop could be part of it. It truly felt like no matter what they just could not move enough people fast enough at all. First time trying the ferry for me so I have no other comparison and I’d not choose that way again personally. It left too bad a taste in my mouth on a special day
CC! My bro! It was the best ten miles of my life running the streets of NYC with you. I was truly honored when you joined me again to get me up mile 23 into Central Park as I was TRULY riding the struggle bus at that point and your support meant way more than you'll ever know. Thank you so much for being with me and for hyping me up after a week of uncertainty leading up to it. There are not many people who would sprint to the starting line with me, after waiting in line for a bus for two hours, just so I could start at 10:55 as planned. You're an amazing friend and creator and I'm so proud of you. I hope you continue to recover and rest up and absolutely smash your half AND Berlin next year! You're amazing!
❤️ Congratulations again! So good to hang out with both you and Brian! I still love that I just noticed your dad in a restaurant window while flying by on a bike lol
As a former local competitive marathoner/running coach/old man now still running, I just wanna say that this video really inspired me to want to do one more marathon and make it 15 total marathons and this just brought me to tears as an athlete who’ve never dropped out of any of my gazillion races/marathons in my running career despite having little niggles or injuries. nowadays I would’ve definitely been more wise to do so if I was experiencing a lingering injury especially after being sidelined from running period for 5 years after a broken sesamoid. As a running coach more so now than a competitive runner and a running product consultant, you did what was best for your mind, body and health. And furthermore, just know that there will be many more marathons in the future for you to tackle and finish injury free. Such a smart move on your part dude and don’t let this unfinished marathon experience deter you from your future NYC marathon running endeavors. I work at the Oakley store in midtown nyc and if your here in the NYC and just want to chat and shoot to shit about running etc please come by. As for now, get that PT treatment and come back strong bro. Congratulations on your effort just the same and keep running. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤👊🏽
Wooooooo, such a reassuring word from Mr. Gee and Chris - you are doing well in sharing the real picture. It's always better to take that deserved break, than break yourself worse trying to go the distance. I am following keenly from Kenya and learning from you.......
I am glad you made the choice to put your health first. After watching this video, I can really see the appeal of the marathon. The air is electric and you can feel the love and support for the runners, it's amazing. Thank you for sharing this and I look forward following your video experiences from your next marathon 😊
You made the right decision. It was hard but your journey has always been about discovering more about yourself. Such an awesome attitude. Definitely admire you.
I admire your wise decision making. It looked amazing to be a part of such an incredible experience, and despite your personal health challenges, you created such an uplifting and inspiring video. I am so glad that you are putting your health first. There are many more races ahead.
hey! it was an absolute JOY to meet you and Lauren at the start, I swear you guys made my morning! thank you for being so helpful and fun while waiting in that bus chaos. I'm happy to hear that you made the best of your day despite pulling out of the race, sometimes hard decisions result in the best outcome! I hope I run (haha) into you and Lauren again. thanks for being so great!!!
It was a bummer I couldn’t watch the whole event on TH-cam 😢 I got to see it in person a few years ago and I started crying, it was so beautiful. The part where people were still arriving at 9pm made me so emotional, god bless their soul ❤ Seeing it in person is so so much better. Congratulations and thank you for sharing 🤍
Just wanted to comment that your videos were a HUGE help getting me prepped for my first NYC. You absolutely made the right choice, thank you for everything you do and heal up soon!
Aw! Christian! You did right by you to take care of yourself. We are living in a generation of marathon excess and WHYYYYYY are we double and triple dipping in one season? Take care of yourself because you do have Berlin next year and we want to see a stellar Christian out there! Thanks so much for coming to the Opening Ceremonies, I was so happy when I spotted you in the stands! And I’m so happy the Project Finish footage worked and OMG! Thank you so much for our PR shout out. The toughest day on the toughest World Marathon Majors course and we seemed to be just laser focused! You are forever our Flyer Family! ❤️🤍🖤
Probably one of few PRs all day lol. But yes, I love catching up, running into, flyers and friends like you all weekend. Hopefully we'll all catch up again soon!
Really loving your channel and content, Christian! This is such an important video for runners to see that sometimes, you really do the toughest thing and prioritize your health! Wishing you a smart healthy recovery!
Hey - great job making it through to 10 miles and sorry you couldn’t finish but it’s great you listened to your body! It was my first time yesterday and what a fun experience- except for the busses at Staten Island. I was so overwhelmed and waited almost two hours as well for a bus. I made it to my corral with five minutes to spare; I didn’t even get to warm up! I tried to shake it off but honestly that was such a rough start to the day. I’m so grateful for the energy of the crowds that kept me going through a very difficult and hot race! It was pretty incredible but yeah, that starting experience made me never want to do it again :-( Best wishes on resting and recovering from your injury, and thanks again for your videos, I found them all very helpful in preparing for the big day ❤️
I had the same experience and it was my first marathon. Definitely still grateful and had an amazing time but definitely a hard first one with start-line logistics and weather.
This was a truely awesome and much needed video. Most don't show the struggles or admit when they do not fully complete a task. This video has helped me get over the fact I was unable to compete this year. I had been myself up about it but seeing this video and reading these comments has allowed me to realize I'm not alone and that even the vets have struggled. Thanks again! I'll be back next year!!
Absolutely, not sure if you saw or follow Casey Neistat. He runs each year, he's pretty fast, had a whole vlog about it being his worst year. Many others just stopped as well or had a rough day. No worries and it was a year to be happy with a finish for whoever got it done!
I am sorry you didn't get to finish but you did good considering your injury and you did the right thing by stopping because when your injury heals you will run again. Enjoyed your videos.
Great video! I finished but ran a PW (personal worst) by an hour and barely broke 5 hours (after time qualifying with a 1:26 half), leg cramps for the entire 2nd half. First NYC race, and the experience and crowds moved me to tears of emotion, absolutely the best crowds on the planet. The bus situation was horrible after the ferry; I almost got in a fight with a super pushy (literally shoving me repeatedly from behind) incredibly rude non-English speaker while trying to board a bus. It really boiled down to utter chaos, and that was the weak link of the day, but it almost resulted in physical violence (we all were frustrated at the total lack of a boarding process). But aside from that, it was the hardest race but by far my favorite in a running career than spans almost 40 years since my first 5K. Thank you fellow participants and the NYC that showed up to support, that truky kept me going to the finish.
A lot of emotions were coming out around me as well. And that's just it, it puts a dent on a day you loved even at your literal worst. I hope they do see a lot of the feedback and organize next year. It would have saved so much stress on many people.
@@ChristianRunsNY 100%. My adrenaline was flowing and heart rate up, I was genuinely rattled and shakey for the next 30 minutes, yep hope they fix that, otherwise an A+ event :-)
Hey Christian. Good for you for putting your health first. I took the 5:45am Staten Island Ferry and I think that could be the only time not to have insane crowds. The heat and humidity was brutal. I had to slow down by Mile 16 to keep from passing out. It was probably one of the hardest days of my life. I crossed the finish line just after the sun went down over the city, but it was my first ever marathon, so I had to make it. You inspire me Christian - hope to meet at another run event. P.S. Congrats to Lauren!
@@cathynewyork7918 Yes, that was me. I finished at 5:17pm ET and was blown away by the crowd still there. Really, I was in shock how many fans there were throughout the course at all hours of the day. I wanted to finish before it was dark, but it was actually lovely finishing just after sunset. I was very happy with it - but with that weather - probably one of the hardest things I've ever done.
@@cathynewyork7918 Absolutely, being the first time - there is always the fear of a cut off time like some cities do. I was worried it would end at sundown but glad it goes into the evening. I forget it is NYC - and full of nightlife. A lifelong dream to do this and a lifelong experience as well.
@@cathynewyork7918 Yes, I would love to do it again. Tough to get admittance due to popularity and being out of town (Denver) but would enjoy trying it again! :) It is New York magic for sure.
@@cathynewyork7918 Thank you! Yes, I ran for charity this year but will look into options for other years. Truly a lifelong dream to run the NYC Marathon - such a novelty that is internationally coveted by many.
So sorry to hear about your race! 😔 As tough as it was you did the right thing. Better to rest it than to push on and make it worse. Thank you so much for the shoutout! 🙌🏼😁
Congratulations again, you have to be one of a few PRs in NY so close to the last PR! Good to see you and catch up as always! Thanks for always sharing the videos!
Hey Christian! First off just want to say thanks for sharing your thoughts on the marathon and having to sacrifice your finish for your injury. I totally agree with you about the shuttle - though I was one of the lucky people who squeezed on the bus first, I could see the look of frustration and stress among everyone who was waiting. They need to do better organizing and getting everyone there earlier! Hope to see you out in a future race. Get well soon!
Thanks Nicholas, glad you made it through the busses quickly! I think the toughest thing is it was a tough weather day to have a difficult morning. Just too bad for so many
So sorry to see you didn’t finish Christian but it was a smart choice with your injury. I also found conditions tough and allowed myself a few walking breaks. Whilst it was a slow time for me, I was delighted to finish my first NYC Marathon. The support along the course was the best I’ve experienced as a runner. I can also confirm that the organization at the Public Library for the buses was excellent. I think I was in the queue for 30-40 minutes, which kept moving constantly. Sorry to see the chaos after your ferry trip. Good luck with your recovery and I’ll look forward to more of your videos. 👍🏻🥇
Hey man! Just found the channel and you are very smart for doing it and dropping out. I did Disney marathon a few years ago when it was 90F at the start. I fought and finished. I ended up passing out at the finish and for the next 1month I was messed up. So very smart for listening to your body man. Sometimes it's not worth pushing
It's always a tough call. I think as someone who's done it before and can do it again it was easier to stop, but I get wanting to give it everything and finish if it is a big moment for a runner or once in a lifetime experience to finish.
I feel for you. You are not alone. I ran the Chicago Marathon in October and also had to bail out at the 20 mile mark as I injured my foot and had to stop. Travelling all the way from South Africa to run a bucket list race and not finish really sucked but I agree that healing an injury more important as it allows to fight another day. NYC Marathon is still one I would love to do.
You definitely made the right decision and some times its more important to listen to your body and make these tough choices! Itrained very hard, tapered and was spot on with my nutrition but also ended up falling apart around mile 10 with massive cramping issues in both legs. If it were not for the staff at the medical tents, other volunteers and many complete strangers along the way that so generously offered up their help and support, I wouldn't have been able to hobble in for the remaining 16 miles. It was the toughest run of my life but also the greatest experience witnessing the best in humanity. Grateful to have had this opportunity.
Christian im still proud of you to even attempt this after Chicago. im now completing my 9+1 to so I can run next year. I was on ashland by the apple store cheering on you guys so motivational can't wait for 11/5/23
Hey Kareem, awesome! Glad you're in for 2023, let's get November back into the 40s or 50s for next year! haha It is so fun to watch! I hadn't spectated since at least 2018, so it was nice to just get to a spot and watch for a bit, the crowds are just so excited for the runners and to be there themselves, such a cool day in NYC.
So brave of you to post this... As runners we know what it means.... It's very motivating... Some things are worth trying and winning is not everything
Thanks George! It's my story from this year, and I hope people don't feel too bad if they didn't finish. So many things have to go right over a few months to get the results we want out of a race like this. I always say it makes the good days that much better!
This was my first marathon and I finished but I had to slow down a TON. It was crazy out there, I’m glad you played it safe instead of pushing yourself. I had several friends who needed to medically disqualify 😞
I was on the 7:15 ferry so I was deep in the crowd by the time you arrived in SI. I was stuck in a tight crowd for 2 hours. And then had to stand on the bus I finally got on. Luckily I had about an hour before my start (11:30) to reset and stretch etc. it was a rough start. I’m sorry you didn’t get to finish but I’m in awe of your positive attitude around it. You’re right. Better to take it easy than cause more damage. That’s awesome that you stuck around to watch! I hope you are able to work out your issues and come back stronger!
Smart giving yourself that much time at the very least. It amazes me how many people are sharing their struggles. Who was actually getting on the bus?! lol
Hi, first time watching your channel and Sunday was my first time running NYC. Sorry you had issue and smart to not push it too. I was in an earlier wave and also experienced similar bus challenges. we had runners jumping place in lines due to the apparent disorganization. It could be lack of volunteers at that location OR just sheer numbers that overtook that location to take runners to the start villages. I believe I heard this year was first time back to 50K in a few years, so maybe they were not totally ready. Agree that this is an area for improvement for sure. Overall, my daughter and I both enjoyed the course, the crowds and meeting other runners. It sure did get warm! This was our 4th marathon of the year and what an awesome experience.
Hi Christian, great video, thanks for sharing. I came over from the UK for my first NYC marathon and it was brutal. I haven't found anyone who said they had a good day due to the conditions, but I suppose that's all part of racing. I got to the ferry at 7:35, so probably one boat after you and I managed to get on a bus at around 9am. Pure luck of being stood where the doors opened, as you said. People were clearly getting stressed and starting to shout at each other. We weren't rushed at the start village, but only had about 10 mins to spare before it was time to line up. You must have been close to me as I recognised some runners in your video who started near me 🙂Reading the other comments, I'm glad the bus situation is not like that every year, it sounds like they just dropped the ball this time and I hope they rectify it for next year. Sorry your race didn't go as planned. Keep up the great content!
I'm glad I found someone who did make it on! 🙃 Congratulations on running, and finishing it sounds like! I am actually happy someone in your shoes traveling a long way to NY had a more smooth bus experience. Hope you had a nice trip to NYC!
Thank you for your videos, helped me a lot! sorry you were injured but heal up and get the next one.. and YES horrible experience at my first marathon.. I was standing for 1 hour and 40 minutes trying to get on a shuttle bus!! Anyways, still happy to complete it and Congrats to everyone!
this was my first marathon ever. it was so tough. i couldnt regular my heart rate due to the heat after mile 3. everything after mile 11 was a struggle. i finished but i am not happy about my time. next year i'll be putting in through lottery instead of 9+1 so hopefully i get a chance for redemption (even though i vowed not to go through that torture again).
It was absolutely brutal out there. I ran 50 minutes slower than I did in London a month ago. My legs were gone by mile 10 due to the heat and the hills. The crowd is the only way I finished. Smart decision to get healthy rather than push it.
Sorry to hear that you didn’t finish, but you made the right decision. I plan to “run” the NYC marathon in 2024. Hopefully they’ve sorted out the transportation logistics by then. Looks like an awesome event.
Thanks for sharing this. Smart decision to not push it. 4:54 Great crows support and encouragement but I can't believe how cramped it is there! That could be dangerous. What the heck?!?! NYC is definitely a bucket list run - thanks for warning about the transportation.
It get's busy, tough to pass maybe but fortunately so far it has never felt unsafe to me. But when anything could happen today it is always interesting to me how some neighborhoods are sooo open to the course.
@@ChristianRunsNY FYI - by 'dangerous', I meant more along the lines of somebody tripping or twisting their ankle or knee, not something along the lines of violence or anything like that. :)
Ha! I’m just seeing this video for the first time, and those are my calves and ASICS SuperBlasts at the 0:46 mark 😆. Been watching your channel for a while, and I had no idea you were behind me on the subway! But yeah, I had a similar experience with the buses after the ferry. It took me a total of 5.5 hours to get from my hotel to the starting line, and I had just 10 minutes to get settled before wave 5 started. I also spent over two hours in the sun trying to get on the bus after the ferry, and I was so zapped that I ran a poor race and didn’t enjoy the experience. I entered the lottery for this year, but deep down, I was actually kind of glad I didn’t get in today. NYC was my dream race, but the experience last November made me far less excited about the idea of running it again. Anyway, sorry to hear about your race bro. Hope your half training is going well!
Absolutely on point about waiting for the buses. It was a nightmare, was my first marathon and my feet were killing me already. I waited over two hours only to the push onto a school bus and stand the entire way there. It was still an incredible experience but definitely affected my performance (and many others!) If I do it again I will take the bus from Bryant Park!
It's alright, I had so much fun around the marathon on Friday and Saturday, and even in those 10 miles Sunday. Excited to hopefully clear this issue and get back to the next race!
Thanks for sharing your journey Christian. Sounds like you made the right decision, although I'm sure it was very difficult. But you had such a long way to go, even walking the rest would have put your recovery at risk. Could you give more information about the bus from Bryant Park you mentioned? I am running the NYC marathon next year and that definitely sounds like the way to go!
It's pretty much the one other main option from within the city. You line up around Bryant Park, jump on, they drop you off where you need to be at the start. It's still a NYRR option so it isn't like finding a public bus, it's super clear what it's for of course with volunteers all around and roads closed just to those with bibs. It's simpler for sure if you are okay bypassing the ferry past the statue of liberty.
I was very smart. Woke up at 3am. Took a 45 min subway at 4ish. Got on the 5am ferry (hardly any crowd). To the bus. Yes the bus did take a little while, for we were waiting for the later ferry to come fill the busses. But we still got there with plenty of time around 630-645ish before my 910 start. I was able to relax and fuel, despite the temperatures. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. Didn't get my 330 time, instead it took me almost 5 hours to finish. Tough course, tough conditions.
Wow that's quite a ways off your goal, and I say that meaning you were tough to keep going knowing how far you were off of your potential. Congratulations, and absolutely early is the smart way to go!
Well I am glad you had the opportunity to be there and participate 😊 and you made a good choice you got take care of knee health first and there will be more marathons to run but first heal put some ice on and rest. Which I was there running 🏃♀️ too . Blessings 🙏👏👏👏👍😎 good job
I was able to finish this marathon (first marathon ever) but my left quad started to cramp up at mile 17. Didn’t get the time I wanted but happy to do this and will definitely do this again in the future!
It's possible, others felt this was the worst year for it so I don't think it is out of the question to address a mistake, simply to avoid everyone choosing bus only next time around.
i hope you get well soon! nyc was my first marathon. it was tough, but an amazing marathon and day overall. what an experience. i had hoped for a sub 4, but with the weather and little running the last month due to sore ankle, that goal went out the door. still finished at 4:11 tho.
Amazing 1st run, tough day to learn to push through the 42k distance. I think you are spot on for a 4 hour goal in a next one. Flatter course, or even just NYC in the 40s and 50s and you've got it!
That’s a shame, but you did the right thing. If you carried on you would probably be out from running longer. There are plenty of more races you can enter in the future. Best to rest and let it heal. Besides you have already done the marathon and got the medal. There’s always next year again 👍🏻. I struggled with the Edinburgh Marathon back in May. It to was a warm day, I got to mile 18 and had to run and walk the rest. Yes I was disappointed but there was nothing I could do, I was drained. It didn’t matter how much training I put in it just didn’t happen on the day. Keep running Christian and get better soon. Take care.
My 9th marathon and the most difficult I’ve ever done. Violently sick at 23 miles and had to walk most of last 10. Combination of heat and just not feeling right made it a long day. Made Boston 2018 look almost easy
I was at 23 for a bit and saw a woman also sick at that exact spot. Just tough all around. I'm almost glad I didn't have to find out how bad that part was for everyone after mile 20. Congratulations of course though!
Yup! Finishing a marathon and doing it well to meet your goals is only more special knowing how much can and sometimes does go "wrong" or not to plan. Thanks Martin!
I think it was the best decision to not finish. Big thanks to all New Yorkers for all there cheering 🙏 My race: I was touched on starting line, to start this marathon. The last 10k were a pain, lots of cramps 😳 but I have my medal and the poncho 😀👍 And yes the buses was catastrophe, I have to walk really fast to the corals, wave 1 /Martin from 🇸🇪
Agreed. I ran it too, toughest marathon, tons on DNF. The organization wasnt the best this year. The route had so many spectators on it and became too thin for all the runners, and the bus/ferry situation was horrible.
Tough slog for you just getting to Staten Island. We were on a bus from white plains. No traffic and comf all the way to ‘the big wait around’.. tough day on the roads..
Unfortunately many many DNFs that day but I'm happy to have tried knowing the injury was lingering and I really hadn't run for a month. On to the next one, that's what makes the finish special!
Yea I had prepared for the possibility. Oddly it never hurt during my long runs before Chicago, so I hoped the slower pace would let me get through the distance but no luck
Sorry about your aborted run, but smart choice to put your health first. This was the first year I did the bus from midtown and so glad I did that. The choke point from the ferry to the bus was also pretty bad in 2018 the last time I ran NYCM, but it seems like it's gotten much worse.
I honestly loved the bus experience too. It's too bad because the boat is so fun but they just need a little organization to better move us into busses. It was a free for all.
Not easy to do back to back marathons. You gave it your best effort and that was good. Not worth risking further injury to yourself, you did the right thing. This hot weather didn't help either.
The hot weather made it tougher because mentally I had an out. I questioned if I was just missing that mental gear to get into and grind knowing I had an excuse but the soreness later in the day and day after it was best. It's another life experience I maybe didn't want but can learn from and grow for sure. Thanks for always supporting!
Delayed response, but no negatives I've ever seen for me skipping something I signed up for or backing out from injury. Only negatives are no credit for 9+1 or anything else you may be looking to complete like the 4 of 6 as well.

I gave up on the buses when I saw the starting line was just a 3mi jog away. Guy sitting next to me on the plane also did the same thing.

You're an amazing friend and creator and I'm so proud of you. I hope you continue to recover and rest up and absolutely smash your half AND Berlin next year! You're amazing!
❤️
Congratulations again! So good to hang out with both you and Brian! I still love that I just noticed your dad in a restaurant window while flying by on a bike lol
Proud of you for not shying away from sharing what happened! Thank you!
Any time! If I'm sharing here on TH-cam, you'll get the good and the bad haha
Thank you, appreciate the message!
😀
You made the right decision. It was hard but your journey has always been about discovering more about yourself. Such an awesome attitude. Definitely admire you.
I admire your wise decision making. It looked amazing to be a part of such an incredible experience, and despite your personal health challenges, you created such an uplifting and inspiring video. I am so glad that you are putting your health first. There are many more races ahead.
Completed my first marathon yesterday in 4:02:27. It was a couch to marathon. From 0 to finishing in 10 months of training. Hope you are doing well!
That's incredible great job!
hey! it was an absolute JOY to meet you and Lauren at the start, I swear you guys made my morning! thank you for being so helpful and fun while waiting in that bus chaos. I'm happy to hear that you made the best of your day despite pulling out of the race, sometimes hard decisions result in the best outcome! I hope I run (haha) into you and Lauren again. thanks for being so great!!!
It was my pleasure! Glad to have people around me to make the morning tolerable! Congratulations on finishing a crazy marathon!
That's so awesome you still cheered everyone else on! Hope everything heals well 🙏💪
Thank you Emily!
Just wanted to comment that your videos were a HUGE help getting me prepped for my first NYC. You absolutely made the right choice, thank you for everything you do and heal up soon!
Thanks Eric! Congratulations and you are very welcome
Aw!
Your critique about the buses was very fair and spot on. NYRR has to improve this. Otherwise they do a excellent job.
Really loving your channel and content, Christian! This is such an important video for runners to see that sometimes, you really do the toughest thing and prioritize your health! Wishing you a smart healthy recovery!
Appreciate that, Korey
Hey - great job making it through to 10 miles and sorry you couldn’t finish but it’s great you listened to your body! It was my first time yesterday and what a fun experience- except for the busses at Staten Island. I was so overwhelmed and waited almost two hours as well for a bus. I made it to my corral with five minutes to spare; I didn’t even get to warm up! I tried to shake it off but honestly that was such a rough start to the day. I’m so grateful for the energy of the crowds that kept me going through a very difficult and hot race! It was pretty incredible but yeah, that starting experience made me never want to do it again :-(
Best wishes on resting and recovering from your injury, and thanks again for your videos, I found them all very helpful in preparing for the big day ❤️
Thanks Donna, I'm sorry you had the same experience. It definitely added to a hard day for runners.
I had the same experience and it was my first marathon. Definitely still grateful and had an amazing time but definitely a hard first one with start-line logistics and weather.
@@cathynewyork7918 yes I would choose the midtown bus should I decide to run again, thanks!
Wow!! Hope you heal well!
Thanks for making these videos, they helped me a lot during my prep for this marathon. ❤
I'm glad!
One of the best video of the NYC Marathon I have ever seen thank you.
Hang in there and all the best on your recovery. Im positive you'll come back stronger than ever!
Thanks Lester! I'm hopeful, and excited to get a gym "coach" through PT haha
I am sorry you didn't get to finish but you did good considering your injury and you did the right thing by stopping because when your injury heals you will run again. Enjoyed your videos.
Hope you have a speedy recovery Christian!
Jackie, thank you! 😁
What a journey 👏. Greatest community ever! Our stories continues onward!
Absolutely!!
takes alot of courage to stop You did the right thing. Heal up and move forward !
Good for you, that's great! It was so tough, lots of Elites couldn't meet their potential let alone the rest of us.
Good for you! You are strong!!! ❤
Just too bad for so many
Congrats, Lauren & Lauren!
🎉🎉🎉
Congratulations, to both Laurens!!!
Thank you!!
Get well soon man and congrats to Lauren!!!
Thanks Ivin!
congratulations Lauren im proud of you also
🥳
I feel for you. You are not alone. I ran the Chicago Marathon in October and also had to bail out at the 20 mile mark as I injured my foot and had to stop. Travelling all the way from South Africa to run a bucket list race and not finish really sucked but I agree that healing an injury more important as it allows to fight another day. NYC Marathon is still one I would love to do.
Always especially tough when it is a long distance trip. NY is always here waiting for runners if you get the chance!
That's the first Sunday in November for NYC! Congratulations!
Live to run another day. Congrats to the Laurens!
Christian im still proud of you to even attempt this after Chicago. im now completing my 9+1 to so I can run next year. I was on ashland by the apple store cheering on you guys so motivational can't wait for 11/5/23
Hey Kareem, awesome! Glad you're in for 2023, let's get November back into the 40s or 50s for next year! haha
It is so fun to watch! I hadn't spectated since at least 2018, so it was nice to just get to a spot and watch for a bit, the crowds are just so excited for the runners and to be there themselves, such a cool day in NYC.
The experience is what it counts 🥳🤗you did what it was best for you and your body, when he talked you listen 🙌🏼hopefully next time
Thanks for sharing all the details of this marathon 💖
So brave of you to post this... As runners we know what it means.... It's very motivating... Some things are worth trying and winning is not everything
Thanks George! It's my story from this year, and I hope people don't feel too bad if they didn't finish. So many things have to go right over a few months to get the results we want out of a race like this. I always say it makes the good days that much better!
This was my first marathon and I finished but I had to slow down a TON. It was crazy out there, I’m glad you played it safe instead of pushing yourself. I had several friends who needed to medically disqualify 😞
Tough day, but congratulations!
Glad you enjoyed and thanks for checking out my video. Too bad the busses were rough earlier as well..
Although you didn’t finish thanks for posting the video that must have been tough, also good information for next year take the bus and be early.
I don't want to ruin the bus for myself next time 😂, but I can't help but say it is definitely my prefered option.
Congratulations on running, and finishing it sounds like! I am actually happy someone in your shoes traveling a long way to NY had a more smooth bus experience. Hope you had a nice trip to NYC!
Smart man!! Really enjoyed and appreciate the honesty of your video! Heal quick, brother.
I appreciate that!
Sorry, yea just a rough start to the day 100%. My feet we're honestly killing me that night.
this was my first marathon ever. it was so tough. i couldnt regular my heart rate due to the heat after mile 3. everything after mile 11 was a struggle. i finished but i am not happy about my time. next year i'll be putting in through lottery instead of 9+1 so hopefully i get a chance for redemption (even though i vowed not to go through that torture again).
That's what happens and you go for another round. Tough day for all though! Be proud of the finish
It was absolutely brutal out there. I ran 50 minutes slower than I did in London a month ago. My legs were gone by mile 10 due to the heat and the hills. The crowd is the only way I finished. Smart decision to get healthy rather than push it.
Amazing day for the crowds, way to go and congratulations Robbie!
Sorry to hear that you didn’t finish, but you made the right decision. I plan to “run” the NYC marathon in 2024. Hopefully they’ve sorted out the transportation logistics by then. Looks like an awesome event.
Always amazing!
I don’t think I’d be back after 5.5 hours, holy cow! Funny you found your feet though!
It's ok, next year!!! Coming stronger
I'm glad you found a great experience in there for the day. So tough though in the AM
Sorry to hear that you DNF the NYC Marathon. 😔 These was my first marathon and I am in your video. 🤣 Thanks for the memories. 😃
Awesome! Congratulations!!
@@ChristianRunsNY Thank you 😊🙏
Great discipline. You made the right call.
I saw you Saturday morning in the New Balance 3 mile run. Sorry to hear that you didn't finish the race!
Thanks Christian! Best wishes to you on a speedy recovery.
Hard luck, hopefully recovery goes well.
Well I am glad you had the opportunity to be there and participate 😊 and you made a good choice you got take care of knee health first and there will be more marathons to run but first heal put some ice on and rest. Which I was there running 🏃♀️ too . Blessings 🙏👏👏👏👍😎 good job
Thanks Martha, I did enjoy the 10 miles and on to the next adventure!
@@ChristianRunsNY good morning and thankyou for sending the video . I enjoyed it very much 😊
I was able to finish this marathon (first marathon ever) but my left quad started to cramp up at mile 17. Didn’t get the time I wanted but happy to do this and will definitely do this again in the future!
Cramps all day going on because of the heat out there. Congratulations on finishing your first!!
Wow re: ferry. Grateful I was on a bus. Heal quickly. Smart decision. ❤ Thank you for your videos.
Wonderful! Congratulations on your own NYC Marathon!
its smart that you give up this is life you can come back !
Will @nyrr provide an official statement regarding the ferry bus situation?
Take care.
Thanks Raymond, yes there are more to come!
Rest up man
Awesome video!
Thank you, Tyson!
My 9th marathon and the most difficult I’ve ever done. Violently sick at 23 miles and had to walk most of last 10. Combination of heat and just not feeling right made it a long day. Made Boston 2018 look almost easy
Should say support was amazing ❤
I was at 23 for a bit and saw a woman also sick at that exact spot. Just tough all around. I'm almost glad I didn't have to find out how bad that part was for everyone after mile 20. Congratulations of course though!
The Ups and downs of being a runner.! There’s always the next run. Recover well.
The last 10k were a pain, lots of cramps 😳 but I have my medal and the poncho 😀👍
And yes the buses was catastrophe, I have to walk really fast to the corals, wave 1
/Martin from 🇸🇪
Tough day but way to finish Martin!
Agreed. I ran it too, toughest marathon, tons on DNF. The organization wasnt the best this year. The route had so many spectators on it and became too thin for all the runners, and the bus/ferry situation was horrible.
I do think I felt some of that congestion between miles 8 and 9. The crowds are always both a plus and minus if it gets tight.
Good call. Live to run another day. Running with injury will just make it way worse.
Tough slog for you just getting to Staten Island. We were on a bus from white plains. No traffic and comf all the way to ‘the big wait around’.. tough day on the roads..
The busses are a nice way to go!
Still proud of you.
Cool video better luck next time you got this!
Thanks!
Agree with the shuttles, it was disorganized and no clear lines
So unfortunate
I am sorry you had to drop. But you did the right thing. Why risking making it worse? How's it feeling today?
It's sore in a few spots. More frustrated that I need to take some time off than anything.
That’s too bad that you could not finish this time. Better luck next year. I wanted to ask which hotel you stayed in. Thank you sir great
You had great views from your hotel that’s why I was asking
It was Ink 48 on 48th and 11th
Any idea about what is causing your glute/hamstring problem?
It's a tendon issue for the hamstring attachment to the upper bone, Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy
A spot left unfinished
Unfortunately many many DNFs that day but I'm happy to have tried knowing the injury was lingering and I really hadn't run for a month. On to the next one, that's what makes the finish special!
not surprised, since what happened in Chicago.
Hey Christian when we do not step on the finish how we look with new york road runner club
Delayed response, but no negatives I've ever seen for me skipping something I signed up for or backing out from injury. Only negatives are no credit for 9+1 or anything else you may be looking to complete like the 4 of 6 as well.
It was so rough!!
“Additional misting stations”
I have to say I hate those. On a humid day we're "wet" enough, we need dry air. The mist just makes your shoes wet lol
