I grew up with the imperial system and have now adjusted to the metric system. It just tickled my funny bone to see 2 young boys, who obviously grew up only using the metric system, playing catch and hear one of them comment "oh, you just missed it by millimeters ! "
Luba Werchola oh, yes that is funny! Not something I've ever heard or maybe I should say never noticed.
The ONLY way I remember which is longer is that the word "meter" is longer than the word "yard", so an actual meter is longer than an actual yard :)

i grew up with metric system and now being in california i have to convert everything ... thankgod i am good at math.. 90 cms make a yard and 100 cms make a meter ... btw .. i love what u r wearing tracy

I live in California and I’m 53 years old. I vividly remember that when I was in the 4th grade they tried to teach us the metric system...it didn’t work and I remember being resistant, although I have no idea why?!? Also, England and I think Australia have a different system for labeling their needles, or at least they used to! In the US, as the needle gets smaller, the number is smaller too, but in England it’s the opposite. We need worldwide standardization for all knitting tools! 😎👍
Kim Rae I'm 55 and I remember in Jr or Sr high, in Texas, we were told that we would have to learn the metric system because that would soon be our only option in the US. Like you, I found it difficult, but numbers and I don't get along well under the best of circumstances! Lol
“Never as a skein how much she weighs!” 😂😂😂 Love it! The US was going to convert to the metric system in the late 60’s but realized the costs would be astronomical, so we never converted. I wish we had, it would make things so much easier. Great episode Craftsy & the GG!
I use google a lot for my conversions . It’s really simple if you want to know how much yarn is needed (I have to calculate yards to meters a lot for projects) I just put for example 1200 yards in meters and google calculates how much that is. Super easy

ok - I may as well confess .... the only reason I haven't subscribed is because I wasn't sure if I'd get notifications for ONLY Off our Needles (which is what I want to subscribe to) or ALL of craftsy topics . I already subscribe to many podcasts and didn't want to miss those because I was sorting thru random notifications from Craftsy for macrame flower pot holders (joke) Maybe other people think this too - what say you? ps GO METRIC !!!
Living in Netherlands I am used to work with the metric system. With so much American resources for knitting, quilting and cooking on the internet I learned to work with the imperial system. It is good know how to work with both, though I prefer the metric, calculations are so much easier and more precise.
I wish everyone used the same system. It would be a lot easier. Less information on labels. No converting needle sizes. No conversion whatsoever. As a person who learned to sew young, I started with imperial then learned metric. At the beginning, I wanted to convert the measurements from metric to imperial. I guess I did this to better understand what I was doing while using metric. After a while, I just measured in inches or feet. I found it really didn't matter, the length was the same whether I used imperial or metric. As long as I didn't switch in the middle I of a project.
I'm a French teacher from the US. When I was in middle school in the 70's we were going to "switch over". But in the US the conversion wasn't government mandated so it fizzled out. I learned the metric system while living in Europe so I have a sense of temperatures and smaller units to use for cooking / making recipes. I find, with the advent of the internet and smart devices, it's no challenge now to convert measures. It's really just about getting used to it. I think it must be similar for people who have had to change from their country's money to the Euro. When I was in Europe pre-euro all signs in France were in both prices and receipts were in both prices and for a period of time either currency was accepted. It's not about understanding how the numbers work in an intellectual way but "feeling" how, when you step outside, that it's about 60 degrees Fahrenheit or 15 degrees Celsius or what one can buy with 10 euros versus 10 francs. It's a huge MINDshift. Culturally, I think all the systems and currencies and clothing sizes are cool! I know one universal system would be simpler now that the world is getting "smaller" logistically due to the internet and all; but I love all the particularity and peculiarity of different places and cultures.

I think if the US could transition to metric we’d get it. I like metric better because it’s multiples of 10 and the measurements are more precise! Admittedly, I’m at the age where I’d need the cheat sheet all the time.
I live in Australia and have only known the metric system; but i use imperial for babies and for height.

1 meter is 1.09 yards. I mess this up every time! The last time was when I was in Canada buying material to make pj pants. I did not buy enough material. Ugh. I had to add cuffs to my pj pants so the didn’t look like floods :)
I’m in the States and like to use Celcius for temps. It just feels easier to get to 30C than to 85F!
My guess is the US hasn't converted to the metric system because it would be too expensive. Always comes down to the almighty dollar! Changing road signs alone would be a fortune.

If they taught us the metric system from early childhood, I think we would be okay . In the medical field we learn metric also for drugs. Go figure! Thanks for the conversion chart.

Yup, the chart does not download after being "purchased" for free.
While it would be nice to have one universal measuring system, having everyone subscribe to it is a different creature altogether.
I'm used to imperial, but can use metric if need be.
1 yard = 90 cm (91.4 cm to be exact)
1 metre = 100 cm
A meter is about 39 inches and a yard is 36 inches.
Metre, as in measurement, not meter as in parking, electric or gas...
On behalf of my country, I am forever embarrassed that we think we need to use a different system than all other countries. I remember we tried. So thanks for clarifying all that.
